Re: Pats Take OSCAR LUA With Pick 211

War Room analysis
Strengths: Shows good instincts and intelligence. Reads and reacts to plays quickly. Maintains good balance to make open-field tackles. Is tough. Uses hands well to shed blockers and make tackles on inside runs. Chases hard after ballcarriers. Consistently makes plays between the hashes. In zone coverage, reads quarterbacks well and closes quickly on short passes in front of him. Uses front arm well to reach in front of receivers to break up passes. Plays faster than 40-yard time would indicate.

Weaknesses: Is short and stocky. Lacks explosiveness and speed to make plays near the sideline. Will struggle to cover NFL tight ends man-to-man. Is an upright runner who struggles to change directions quickly. Struggles to protect legs from cut blocks. Is not a big hitter.

Bottom line: Lua lost his starting job to sophomore Rey Maualuga in camp and didn't play much as a senior. Lua projects to go undrafted but could become a backup 3-4 inside linebacker who contributes on short-yardage and goal-line situations and on special teams.

Eh, whatever... BB is a smart man, even if our linebacker tastes are apperently wildly different.

Re: Pats Take LB Oscar Lua With Pick 211

Strengths:
Decent bulk...Has outstanding instincts...Is always around the action...Diagnoses quickly...Tough...Hard worker and the football equivalent of a gym rat...Loves the game...Intense and motor runs non-stop...Solid tackler...Special teams potential.

Weaknesses:
Timed speed and quickness are below average and lacks a burst...Shorter than you'd prefer...Is not a great athlete...Sub par range...Liability in coverage...Poor agility and change of direction..Durability's a concern...Doesn't have a big upside.

Notes:
Finally got a chance to start when he took over for Lofa Tatupu in 2005 but lost that job to talented youngster Rey Maualuga in 2006...Is similar in some way to Tatupu in that he does not have the physical tools you look for but overcomes it with intangibles...Could be a backup in the pros if he can manage to stay healthy.

All I need to hear about him is right here.

Rey Maualuga on Oscar Lua:

"He'd always be there to help me out. Watching film, he'd break things down for me. Even though we were going for the same position, he didn't care. He was helping me out."

Sportswriter J.A. Adande:

Each lesson meant less playing time for Lua down the road. It's like Bill Gates sharing ideas with Steve Jobs. Why would Lua put so much effort into teaching Maualuga?

Oscar Lua:

"Because I want to win. It's that simple."

I doubt he ever does anything special. Maybe a goalline guy.

I love the writing off of such picks. Y'know, Tom Brady runs a shoddy 40. ;)

Siler >>> Tua. Dumb pick with Siler still on the board. Don't care what anyone says. Hopefully Siler doesn't become the defensive version of Brady. Good pick for the Chargers, blah pick for the Pats, will never make it.

I'm telling you flat out that Brandon Siler will do very little in the NFL.

Again, I'll trust the Patriots' rankings and ratings of players and what they'll do in the PATS' SYSTEM over your's.

Oh, and Lua will be a star ? Siler certainly has more of a chance to be a star than Lua, Siler was rated 2nd overall as far as ILB's by some people, his knee must be really hurt.

No...every single source I read/heard said he was a total turd who had an embarassingly inflated opinion of himself and didn't take coaching well. I doubt Lua will be a star but I would rather take a flyer on a hard working, humble kid that a head case. Were you even watching the draft when they kept referring to Siler?

From what I hear Lua has some good skills especially in the run game but injury problems....the way I figure he had to be pretty good to be on USC the last few years...Worth the pick to see if he can get over his injuries.

Siler is hurt. Had a partial knee ligament tear. Question if he is ready to hit.

Belichick and Meyer are very tight. That said and the fact that they still passed on him multiple times despite it being a position of need says that they feel there are major issues.

Every team passed on him multiple times. He was a 6th round pick. It's not that big of a deal.

Your argument says that some guy who career has risen to the point where he writes articles predicting what the people who have power to make decisions has to say holds more value that what Bill Belichick, who not only has earned the job of being the guy who makes that decision (the one that the other guy is only qualified enough to guess at and write about) but is the one with 3 SB Championships.

If SB Champiopsn were built by doing what the guy who is only skilled enough to write opinions about making draft decisions (that is no one will pay him for the quality of those decisions and ask him to actually make them) then the reports you read would be written by a guy Bill Belichick would hire in order to make smarter decisions than him.

In other words, you are judging the decisions based on siding with the least qualified opinion over the most qualified one.

This is why I love draft day. The draftniks have total meltdowns with the Pats picks every year. So funny.

Yea, slow, overweight players that are jerks and need knee surgery are always good picks. Good call Einstein.
