I have to wonder if this was a throw away draft. The Pats traded away almost all of the picks that could have helped this team.

We have problems at Safety, CB and MLB. We addressed Safety but we still problems at CB and LB but we did not address either. Instead we picked up a proven head case/quitter in Randy Moss.

Have the Past become the Cowboys picking up trailer park trash ?

I nominate this as a PatsFans.com Hall of Fame post.

Seriously, this is the post of the year.

You forgot to mention how we signed ADALIUS THOMAS.

With our draft picks, we picked up Welker, Moss, a 1st rounder in 2008, and 3rd rounder in 2008.

What are you complaining about?

I am talking about the draft. I like the Donte Stallworth signing. The Welker trade is open. I expected us to pick up a CB, Safet and LB. We got the safety but we still have a serious need at CB. ILB is also still a concern. Vrable moved inside this year and played well. Teddy B I believe is close to retirement.

I would have liked another CB and I would have liked another ILB.

I think Kiper said he only had 17 players in this year's draft with 1st round grades. So, if the Pats got one of them, then I'm content with the way things went down. Seems like the Pats played the value card fairly well.

With the way free agency went, I told my good friend yesterday morning, I could care less who the Pats draft if they traded a mid-round pick for Randy Moss. Now we have Moss and I love it. I love the addition of Merriweather and a potential high pick in next years draft.

Are you suggesting that the Patriots had the opportunity to use picks on guys that would help this team out this but just for the fun of it decided to pass on them for unknown players and future draft picks? Think about what you are saying.

The draft isn't about what you would have liked it's about what Belichick and Pioli like.

Exactly! They know a lot more about what a David Harris or anyone else available at 28 would have brought to the table for us, even more than the hairhelmetted mel kiper jr. I know everyone wanted us to bring in a stud MLB that we could evision stepping right in and being the next Bruschi but there was only one Patrick Willis on the board. This was a crap draft and BB/SP saw a whole lot more VALUE in having two first round picks where BOTH PICKS are FIRST ROUND talent.

I think this is yet another sign that BB/SP are here for a while, clearly they seem to be quite content running the model NFL franchise. I think everyone needs to realize what a special organization we have, one where professional athletes come to not for money but to WIN.

In today's NFL you can't just look at the draft on it's own. You have to consider FA's they picked up with it for total players picked up. In that sense the Patriots had a banner offseason. They may not be done either and still may pick up a UFA ILB like Seau.

IDIOTIC post of the year...Aabtec, you are the reason we have the "practice squad" designation. You should never be allowed onto the roster as you fail a basic understanding of what Draft day is all about.

I expect that the BB/SP will be here for a while. Like I said, I have concerns about CB and ILB. In our secondary, the Pats have AS, EH, RH and EW as starters. AS is pissed about being tagged and could try to shoot his way out of town. If he does get out of town then I believe Wilson will need to move to CB. That would mean Merriweather would take Wilson's spot.

Plus after this year we have Wilson, Gay and AS will be free agents.

awouldn't it be smarter to get a couple of CB in house now to get them acclamated to the Pats system ?

It might have been smart to take a GOOD cb, it would not have been a good idea, as you suggest, to get ANY cb. We also had a need at safety - there was a quality safety available, and we took him.

The next cb taken after #24 was Chris Houston. He is so good that he didn't go until #41 in a crappy draft.

Next year we can package our firsts for a stud corner, of which there were clearly none in this draft.

Let's look at this from a couple of angles
1. Asante Samuel may just decide to sign his 1 year tender and play this season now that the pats have a very serious opportunity to take it all. This would allow for another year to work out a long term contract and allow Samuel to get another ring as a bonus.
2. If Samuel holds out, the Pats can do an Indy and beat the competition by scoring more than their opponent.
3. The Pats did pick up a couple of corners and LB's that are highly competitive and fit into the Pats defensive scheme. Before Bruschi, Vrabel and Colvin are ready to call it quits, these new aquisitions should be able to fill the vacancies very well...

All in all, this has got to be the finest Offseason and Draft for the Patriots!!!

Most analysts agree that the Patriots are poised to take 3 of the next 5 Superbowl trophies back to NE!!!!! And that train keeps rollin' along!!!!

Go Pats!!!!!!

Maybe It's just me but I love how all the talking heads are now scared of how good we are cause now they can't ball wash Peyton anymore

Well.... everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I (almost) couldn't be more pleased with this draft. (wouldn't it have been wonderful if DeOssie (sp?) actually fell to us at the end of Rd #4?).... I give this draft an A.... which does, in my opinion, give us the best offseason ever.

I think you are forgetting about Tory James (CB help).... from the LB perspective, we got some LBs late....and in Bioli I trust on those guys... that might give us the youth we want right there.

Min. of 9 picks (with 5 on day one) next year, Welker, Moss, Merriweather (sp?), AND 8 other players...... OUTSTANDING draft.

silly me..I thought it was suppose to build the team using rookies to help pay the way...damn..I must have been asleep in that class..

buzz off....

The draft isn't about what you would have liked it's about what Belichick and Pioli like.

I think this is a stupider post than aabtec's. I think this because instead of actually raising a point, and trying to bring about discussion, like aabtec's did, his simply dismisses any discussion on abstract terms. Obviously the draft is about what Belichick and Pioli like. Just because not everyone understands their logic doesn't make their arguments dismissable.

Here is my actual response to aabtec's original question. For everyone else's sake, here it is.

Yes, the Patriots traded away many of the picks. However, there were good reasons that they did these things. Here are the reasons that make the most sense to me.

#1 I was under the impression that Adalius Thomas was hired to play ILB. If he was not, then he will play OLB and Vrabel will go inside again. Either way, the position is filled. We did add more depth with Lua and Rogers on Day 2, and there are still plenty of UDFAs and regular FAs out there.

#2 With two first round picks and a third round pick, we would not have had enough cap space to sign and keep everyone on our rostly, namely Asante. Essentially, he could hold us hostage and/or not play this year.

#3 The Moss deal occured independently of all of this because we felt that he would be a good asset for our team. If he doesn't work out, it appears he's only signed for one year, in which case we will never have to see him again. We will not have a drawn out deal like the Eagles, Raiders, and Cowboys have had with bratty wideouts. I don't think this deal was "instead" of anything else, it was just "along with."

#4 Yes, the cornerback need was not dealt with. For me, the reason that makes the most sense is that things are looking good with Asante and we have a deal worked out. This would also support the cap space theory about trading away picks. It is also possible that, by drafting Meriweather, Eugene Wilson goes back to corner and we fill that need indirectly. Also, we did sign Tory James and Eddie Jackson, at least one of whom should contribute to the roster.

So no, I don't think it was a throwaway draft.

Come on, guys. Just because you disagree with someone, or even consider them stupid, doesn't mean you can't be respectful.

One thing I've learned about Patriot drafts is that you need to give it a few days to digest it before making a decission. Afterwards it always looks better.
