Anyone else surprised that the Pats passed on Hughes?

Anyone? I thought that CB Damyeon Hughes would have been a good value pick in round 3. Apparently the Colts thought so. I have a feeling that BB/Pioli have a day 2 target who they think can be the heir apparent to Asante.

The fact that they traded out of the first, second, and third rounds, and put off alot into next year, and passed on a CB, makes me think that they are clearing cap space, and roster space for resigning Asante.

Makes sense, right?

I don't know why everyone thinks we need corners, what we really needed was exactly what we got, a safety that can cover the slot man. I don't think that Cobbs or Samuels could have played much better than the did in the AFC Championship game. Don't forget we still have Randall Gay. I would love to see DeOssie and another DB today.

Plus of course, Manny Ramirez, just because I want to buy the jeresey!!

I would love to keep Asante, I'm just not that optimistic that they'll be able to strike a deal. Asante wants Nate Clemens money and the Patriots don't think he's worth it. If they did, he would have been signed to a new contract by now.

Hughes has a very slim chance of ever becoming a legit starter in the NFL (starting the majority of a team's games in a single season). In fact, I say he has zero chance.

In Indy? I'd say he's got a better chance than zero, probably closer to 100% with their D.

I'm not as high on Hughes as other people. I believe his lack of short area quickness will be exposed even in the cover 2. He may gamble and make a play here or there but that doesn't seem like enough to hold onto a starting gig even in Indy. Of course, I have been wrong many times before.

That's going to be VERY interesting...Hughes had the highest skill-to-talent ratio of any of the CBs, and given Indy's offseason DB exodus he's going to be thrown into the fire. I think on balance he was a smart choice for them. If you need help now you take the polished player with limited upside.

I was surprised tha we didn't go up for MCCauley when he ws there so late.

Benefit of the doubt to BB/SP, they have earned it.

We already had our safety in Meriweather.;)

I still think the Pats have a chance to sign Asante. It's way too early to tell.

Wait until we get closer to July 15th. No way we pick up his replacement on

day two. There were only a couple of good cornerbacks on day one. Also,

there are no decent cornerbacks on this roster to adequately replace him.

Only oft injured Randall Gay (who hasn't signed his tender) and over the

hill Tory James.

I was suprised. He was on my big 10 board. Long term I think the Pat's may have a couple of CB's in mind that may work out in this draft. Some tend to forget they have scouts that work 300+days a year to find good players.

Well don't forget that they have to restructure Moss. That's going to take cap space too.

I think he'll be a good Tampa II Cb but I couldn't see him fitting our system.
