Pats' Plan or Jets' Plan?

Looks like the Jets and Patriots saw very little value in the 2007 draft.

The Jets took the picks they did have, packaged them all up (except for a 6 and a 7), and got 2 players that should help them pretty quickly. Revis was the top-rated corner in the draft and Harris looks to fit Mangini's scheme (and also allow Vilma to shift into a more natural role).

The Pats took the picks they had (except for the 24 they used on Meriweather) and kept moving, down, down, back, back, and out. Added 2 picks next year and now have 4 picks in a 10-pick stretch at the bottom of Round 6 / top of Round 7.

New England has been good at finding 2nd day players (8 of 10 total picks from last year are still on the squad), but in this case, I think I like the Jets' plan better. The Pats had fewer needs than the Jets. And they certainly had the picks to come up with 2 solid packages that would have allowed them to trade up for a Beason... or stay put for a Harris.

One thing is for sure, even if the Pats' plan works out better in the long run... the Jets' plan is a lot more fun to watch on Day One.

I just drove over two hours home to hear we once again traded out and up into next year. Man-gina obviously thought the same way as we did but blew his whole draft on a couple of players this year. Earlier, being caught up in draft frenzy, I was dissapointed. And I thought Mangina had the better of us. Thinking about it now, we traded up in round one and round 3 (probably) and gained a 4th and 5th. We lost no picks. We gained 2. BB/SP believe that next year's draft is a superior one to this one and have strategically placed themselves to be part of it. Mangina, seeing no value either, sold out for what he believes to be two quality players in this draft. We shall see in time, but I feel better about it now.

BB did say that many players with first day grades on the talking heads' boards didn't deserve draft status on his. He graded them out as UDFA. So he loaded up on day 2 looking for value and diamonds in the rough and parlayed into next year. Its easy to get caught up in the hype when you read these mocks and top lists and study the draft without looking at the bigger picture of how this draft stacks up with next year. I did.

BB did this once before, and it worked out great, so I am satisfied.

BTW, that is probably why the team was so active in FA to fill their holes. They knew this draft was a dud at the top.

Well, I think we could have moved up with our two firsts and third and drafted LaRon landry, and that would have been pretty damn cool. I'm not sure I would complain if we had.

But instead of usign the two firsts and the third for Landry, we end up with Meriweather, an early fourth and eary seventh round pick, and a first and third next year.

I guess we will have to see who we get with those four picks tomorrow and next year to get a final answer, but I'm satisfied with how it was done.

I think we will win the division and go deep into the playoffs, and will be even stronger next year with 5 first day picks.

whey would we go up that high and pay a rookie the same money we wont pay samuel and meriweather is the next ed reed and we get the 49ers pick next yer maybe a top 15 pick it worked out for us the jets maid there team better they will be a 10-6 or 11-5 team next yer but we will be a 14-2 superbowl champs

What the mangenius doesn't have is Pioli, the Jets had two high first round picks lat year, and now another high first round pick this year, That is alot of guarenteed money and signing bonuses! Now add a high 2nd rounder, and the trade for Thomas Jones, and Noodlearm's contract and salary cap hell is coming soon. Now think about Vilma, I think he is going into the final year or his rookie deal, where is the salary cap room to sign him?

The Pats can make the claim that rather than focus on the weak 2007 draft, they set their focus on aggresively attacking the 2007 free agent market and stocking up for the 2008 draft.

The Jets claim is that they sat on their hands during FA, got 2 rookies, and made a trade for Thomas Jones.

All in all, before today's picks I like what the Pats did more. And they were much better to start with.

Actually, if you're going to do it that way:

Patriots get: Brandon Meriwether, Wes Welker, a 2007 4th and 7th, and a 2008 1st and 3rd
JEST get: Darrelle Revis, David Harris, and Thomas Jones, MINUS a 2007 4th and 5th (and more?)

Needless to say, I still prefer the Pats' strategy.

The trades that the Pats made made the first day no fun to watch. But, I think they were the smart ones. Whether they did better than the Jets all comes down to the play of Harris in my opinion. When we traded to the 49ers BB was basically saying he does not want any of the top LBs of this draft. Except for Willis and Beason all LBs were available and he passed on everyone. The fact the the Jets traded up to get Harris makes me think they valued him more then we did. We will see who is right

And the Jets can't claim to have an extra first round pick next year, either. So?

Personally, I think both teams did fine. I've always liked the strategy of getting extra value for this year's picks by trading them for discounted picks next year.

The Pats and the Jets both did the best that they could on day considering what holes they had to fill and what picks they came into the day with and how weak the draft is. The difference is the Jets have more holes to fill so they decided to be aggressive and get the two players who they thought could help them out right away and in the future. I think they did a great job. The Pats have less holes so they grabbed Merriweather who was the only round one value left on their board and then got a #1 and #3 in 08 plus a #4 this year and a #7. I think they were trying to trade the #24 pick too but couldn't get the right value.

I think they both get A's for yesterday given their different circumstances. At the end of the day the Jets simply could not afford to do what the Pats did in the draft because they're not at that level yet.

In the division I'd give the Bills a B and the Fins an F.

I have no idea wtf they were thinking but we can count on them sucking for a few more years.

Great post. What both teams did is validate the draftnik sense that this was a lousy draft for a BB defense. The Jets have more holes now, so they packaged up to plug them; the Pats have a more solid 2007 roster but age creeping up on them, so they loaded up for a stronger 2008 draft. No right and wrong there, both rational responses to the situation. Unlike drafting a KR at #9.

As much as I dislike the Jets, I think the way things went down on day one was the best thing for both teams. It seems the Pats are confident with starters for '07 and look to pick up depth on day 2 and are loaded w/ picks for '08. The Jets are trying to ride their momentum from this season and fill it with impact players that can step in right away. While this will probably help Mangini in the short term, he will likely be scurrying next year at this time and scratching his head while the "SB champs-to-be" lick their chops with a possible top 10 pick(SF) and several more 1st day picks next year!
