Everyone knows I love this team, its owner, its FO, and its coach. No one is more optimistic or willing to see the bright side of most issues, but as I type this, for the life of me, I cannot see ANY value that we got out of this draft so far.

As I see it we got a very athletic but undersized safety. Not a bad pick, decent value, but nothing to get excited about. He'll fit right in with the 5'10 limit we seem to put on DBs... Torry James being the exception that proves the rule.

After that NOTHING made sense.

1. BTW - Let me make it clear I am fine with trading some of our picks into next year. So,I was OK with trading down with SF, but getting back their first round pick next year is not nearly the value most people think it is. IMHO There is a much greater chance that that pick will be closer to 30 than 15. In other words, for the privelege of waiting ANOTHER year, we will most likely get the same value as what we had today...only a year later. Generally the thought is that a pick next year is worth a round lower in value THIS year. So using TODAY's value, we traded a first round pick, for a second round pick. It makes absolutely NO SENSE.

And getting their 4th round pick, just made it worse. A third would have been bad, but passible. Their 3rd and 5th would have been OK and fair. Or perhaps a conditional extra pick next year in case the pick is in the is higher than 20. But none of this happened. There really isn't any way to justify the LACK of value in this trade, we are taking the biggest risk that pick won't be high enough to justify the trade

2. Then there was the wait for the 91st pick, where as several people have mentioned there were several reasonable picks available at that spot. Though I was pissed that BOTH Waters the LB and Hughes the CB were picked just in front of them. Maybe they were too, and just said F**K it and literally gave Oakland their 3rd round pick for nothing.

Again using common value, in getting Oakland's 3rd NEXT year, they gave Oakland a third round pick, for a 4th round pick and a camp fodder 7th. So for the second time in the SAME draft we took LESS value for MORE value.

3. So at the end of the day we certainly seem set for a busy tomorrow. We now have 2 picks in the 4th, one pick in the 5th, 4 picks in the 6th, and NOW 2 picks in the 7th. That's NINE freaking picks in an area where you hope to find 2 to 3 guys who will likely make your team. Does THAT make any sense to anyone????

So on Sunday evening, they will trot out 9 guys we never heard of, or at least most of us. Most likely 5 or 6 of those picks WON'T make the team, and the bulK of this draft will end up being a huge waste of time energy and man power.

We will not be younger and more athletic, especially at LB. We still won't have solved depth issues at CB, and LB. The best I can hope for is that in all those 9 picks we will be able to find 2 guys who in THREE years will eventually develop into productive starters.

In the mean time, after 11 picks, we most likely have gotten ONE player who has the POTENTIAL to make a significant contribution THIS SEASON. That is NOT what I expected out of this draft, or any draft.

Sure we seem to be well set up next year with 5 first day picks, much like we were in 2003, however we paid WAY TO HIGH a price for that privelege.

This draft is looking like a whiff of Grierian proportions. Its almost like we are giving the rest of the league a mulligan. The Patriots are so good we can take a draft off and still be better than most of the teams in the league.

IT was frustrating to see other teams like the Jets, Jacksonville and Dallas move up and down in the draft getting value AND the men they wanted, while my team's well respected FO basically gave picks away. I can't make any other explaination for the actions I saw today.

I really looked forward to this draft, and now I can hardly wait until it is over. My only interest now is to see if they get a chance to draft DeOssi with the SF pick, after that Julian Tavares hold more interest for me than the Patriots. Today will make the long period between now and the start of the season even longer for me.

Da Bruinz came to a very similar conclusion in another thread and he was attacked by numerous people including moderators for basically daring to second guess the front office.
Frankly I agree 100% with everything the two of you have said, in fact if you are not a fan of the Patriots you Know that we lost value in terms of the current market value of the draft picks we surrenderred.

Just to play Devils advocat however here are the strongest facts to justify why they made the moves they did today:

1)Being among the best evaluators of talent they honestly believed this years talent was less than next years. (Isn't this what they thought last year also??(when we didnt pick up a LB))
2)In the real world we didnt actually lose anything except percieved value. It is believed that a pick next year is less valuable than a pick this year but in reality it is probably more valuable except if you are not depending on those picks to contibute immeadeately.
3)We improved our team thru free agency and these prospects may not have had much chance to make our roster.
4)We are so brilliant that we know who the Colstons and Bradys are hiding in the bottom of the draft and we want to show the world just how dumb they are for not picking this years Brady in the first 199 picks or so...

Well I feel better now. So far We picked up a solid Safety prospect, and a productive WR and 4 picks a 4,7,1,3. The critics of the world are going to have our lunch and give us a D draft grade, however of those 9 remaining picks and undrafted free agents we will find 2-4 solid gems who will play a role in our success.
It was a hard time to be a fan today. We all expected 2-3 solid prospects. Well we will get them but we must wait till next season to select them. If your like me you hope and expect that that will be after our superbowl victory and what better time to have an influx of fresh young talent.

Actually DaBruinz was also crying like a baby in every single thread he could find. I wasnt a huge fan of day 1 but I loved the Meriweather pick.

I wasn't happy with surrendering our second first rounder as well as I guess now our third rounder to SF and Joakland. We could have used some linebackers, a cornerback, and maybe a running back. AD or not, our defense has still aged significantely and we didn't do anything to improve that in a very good defensive draft.

But correct me if I'm wrong, isn't next year's class supposed to be a lot better (not that it will matter anyway with SF recharged in a weak NFC, we'll end up close to the bottom of the draft)?

/Begin Rant

I don't know about all this "bad draft" stuff you're talking about. I honestly think there is a much BIGGER picture that you, I, and everyone on this forum don't know about. We did go out in FA and get some of the best talent available. And for what? Some draft picks. Now if it was you or me for that matter and we are sitting in the front office. We could say to ourselves, can we go out and get some proven players, Players we've seen play at the professional level or take the risk on a few guys that have played in college? I (my personal opinion mind you) think the Pats FO is looking at the big picture. We have seen Bill and Co. work the patchwork defense and win (not to mention all the picks we get next year with a stronger draft class). We still have a bunch of guys coming back and we added a STUD that can play so many damn positions you really can't comprehend (Adalius). Not to mention, a guy in the draft that can learn his position, get a few downs in, and in a year or two make a huge impact.

That said, I'm so sick of this sh*t saying the Pats sh*t the bed this year. They should of done this and they should of done that. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN THAT FRONT OFFICE. So sit back, drink a beer, and wait till the season begins. I'm betting that when they are in the playoffs and winning that you're going to be the same fan that says "In Bill We Trust"

Sorry but I've been waiting to unload

Who was that Bob Sanders guy we kept hearing about last year and how tall is he ?

Nope. Wrong.

SF allowed the most points in the league last year.
SF scored the 9th least points in the league last year.

Does that sound like a team closer to 30 than 15 ? Not to me.

Sigh.

A late 3rd vs. an early third. Not QUITE a full round gain but close.

Third round picks aren't all created equal.

Seriously, Ken, this was a pitiful post from a great poster. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I don't know about this re-charged thing, SF was bad last year despite an almost .500 record - and while they're in the NFC their schedule next year is tougher. Also, look for Alex Smith to regress a little with Norv Turner gone.

And Sanders is 5'8". Imagine how Ken would cry if he were on our team.

:bricks:

I see Meriweather as a FS so his size is about right.

Seriously I was so floored when we picked him.

Floored good or bad ? I was, and am, happy with the pick.

I'm also happy that we're a top SB contender and have two #1s, a #2 and two #3s lined up for next year.

Nuff ced, buddy.

That has been my point all along :rocker:

Floored in a good way.

I could just sense that the Patriots liked him and I was praying they picked him.

BTW, SF had something like the 5th worst point differential in the league last year. They are NOT a good team.

Well you probably remember when we played Baltimore in 2003 and Belichick just loved Ed Reed . . . Merriweather may or may not get to that level but he's the closest Belichick has had to an Ed Reed if he plays the way I expect.

Wasn't that 2004? Reed was the leading candidate for DPOY and Belichick was heaping the praise on him. (deservedly so.)

If Meriweather reaches the Ed Reed level this will go down as one of the best picks in the Belichick era, just bellow Brady and alongside Seymour.

Ill be honest, I have no idea what the FO is doing, lol, but with the draft, the one thing I have learned is that it simply can not be judged immediately.

In most cases, a 3-year period is usually a good measuring stick. So I will be the first to admit my disappointment may be off base.

I know you have 12000+ posts, but I just don't agree. Alex Smith will be a fringe pro bowler next year and his TE has more potential than our .....well, lets not make this about the Patriots. I do live in SF but I think Frank Gore could put up numbers like the top 10 pick he would have been without two knee surgeries at Miami. Lets just say every guy on this board will consider taking him with their #4 fantasy pick next year. Clements was overcompensated in terms of $$, but that will affect them down the line when they have cap problems, not next year. They had a good day today too.

I am sure Pioli knows all of this and he evaluated the trade based on the WORST CASE SCENARIO. I think for the purposes of evaluating a trade from his perspective, he probably assumed the pick will mid 20s. Thats what they probably assumed with the Branch pick.

(note: this post is not a evaluation of the trade today, but an opinion on the successfulness of the 49ers in 2007).
