I kow the draft is not over
I know SF pick could be in the 16-20 next year

But Deion Branch for Brandon Merriweather and basically nothing else the first day of the draft?

There were so many possibilities before the welker trade for teh Pats to get younger and more athletic on defence with 2 #1's a #2 and a three

All we get is a 5'10 featherweight safety.

Be honest...there must be others who are feeling disappointed.

whats wrong with a 5"11 safety? Hes the best cover safety. but i agree..im dissapointed that we traded 28..could of at least gotten in 2nd round or early 3rd

While I am disappointed, I think its foolish to call Meriweather a featherweigth safety. He's actually got 5 lbs on Eugene Wilson. And he could put on another 5-10 lbs in the Pats programs.

I don't agree with BB that the Patriots got good value with their trade. Sorry, there isn't anyone who can convince me of it. Not when Dallas was able to trade up from the 4th spot in the 2nd round for a 3rd and 5th round pick.

What did you see something I didnt see? I didnt notice Branch doing anything special what so ever. Personally I'd have liked to snag David Harris. But I'm not at all angry at Beoli for accepting a trade. Who knows the 49'ers could do good or bad next year. Lets hope for the latter and we get a great pick.

Marcus, I swear to God the Pats could win the next 10 Super Bowls and you'd still be disappointed. That's all I ever read from you.

This draft hasn't been disappointing in the least.

Next year, you will be happy we have 2 first picks. The players stock should be better. Don't forget we could trade up in the 3rd with the 4th rounder Pats got.

It isn't realistic to say it's only Branch for Meriweather and that's it for Day 1. We also get:

Wes Welker
An unnamed 3rd-rounder
An unnamed 2008 1st-rounder

There's also still the possibility of trading up. We have two 4th rounders and two 6th rounders that we can package to make a late 3rd. With the other third and picks from next year, there's still plenty of possibility for a move up.

Pats one:

perhaps you should stick to the topic rather than personal shots.

Are you happy with this years draft so far?

Look what the jets did for example

The Jets got a CB, albeit a very good one. And this is much better than getting a good safety?

Are you a Jets fan?

Trading away there second and fifth rounders to move up and take a corner? I will take meriweather at 24, a 4th rounder, and a 2008 first rounder in a weak draft any day of the week.

What is most interesting, I think, was the Pats desire to have a first rounder. I am sure that if they had wanted to accept a package of lower picks this year, SF would have been more generous. But, let's face it: giving up a first round pick in a draft is a huge cost, for any team, but especially for a struggling team such as SF, who needs picks. They were unlikely to be that keen on that under any circumstances.

So I'm thinking...BB and SP are expecting the Patriots to be very good for several years to come...which means that there would be a strong chance that NE would lack a high draft pick for some time. Perhaps they felt it was time take a chance on SF's pick, and move into the top tier of the draft for another real impact player, one they would never have a shot at.

I agree that the deal is disappointing...it's hard to get excited about a fourth...and given no second round picks and our own low third, SF''s third would have been far better. But there must have been a strong desire on NE's part to have the first.

The Jets came away with the best CB on the board when they started with a pick one lower than the Pats.

the PATS do not pick until almost the end of the 3rd round.
Maybe they will find a gem...but it seems like they could have done better

I am not a JETS fan.

On this board if you ever dare to question anything that BB/Pioli do you get attacked...it always happens

Yea, getting a first rounder that is a lock to be higher than the one we traded, and a fourth rounder. What a bad trade.

Ya lets hope the 49 ers have a bad year so we can call this draft a success. I hate the trade out of # 28.

what you dont understand is the patriots did most of thier work in free agency, they got a good player in merriweather and a possible top 10 pick next year, give the brain trust some slack and stop your compaining

It seems a great many posters have learned nothing from the Pats front office. It's all about the long view. Why can't people understand that? Moving up, potentially, 15 spots in next years 1st round from this years first round is a no freaking brainer. They somehow managed to get a 4th rounder on TOP of that, too. Geez, we're rooting for the smartest, most efficient organization in the NFL all this time and still people don't understand (no matter how much they may claim to do so).

They are not getting a 2008 first rounder. They already had that, a monkey could move a first round pick to the following year for a first round pick. Most teams are looking to improve now.

So, now you can see the future and you know that the Pats will get a pick higher than 28? OH, btw, nice of you to NOT take into consideration that the Pick isn't worth as much because its next year's pick.

See, according to BB, when you get a pick like that, its the equivalent of 1 round LOWER in the current draft. So, that 1st round pick is really the equivalent of a 2nd round pick this year.

So, yes, its a BAD trade when you consider that the Pats could have had a 2nd round pick this year that was at #10 in the round. And especially when you consider that Dallas moved up 8 slots for a lot MORE than what the Pats got in return.
