24th pick: ...down to wire...number of options...Meriweather, spent time with...versatile...nickel, both safeties...intelligent...understanding of concepts...high level of competition...productive player...

28th pick: ...options...decided to trade...good value...good players on board, but best value in trade...still have same number of picks...

91st pick: ....surprised if there's movement...

link?

interesting that meriweather came down to the wire. i would have loved to by a fly on the wall for that conversation in the war room.

... Questions ...

Meriweather's versatility a strength...doesn't know how he'll shore up defense, will see in camp...other veterans at safety and corner...has physical element, but isn't 225 lbs...for size, isn't afraid to tackle and support run at LOS, be physical player...not talking about oversized guy...he's around the ball...instinctive...gets hands on balls...hasn't done a lot on ST's lately, but will be more involved here...athletic, can run, can play physically...will have to work on ST, but can't see reason why he can't...he has addressed his "bad decision" already...I don't think that's who he is...football is important, works hard at it - more representative...he made a mistake and has talked about it...we're comfortable with him...all of us have made mistakes...it's not the incident, but their character...what they're really about...it's a lengthy process with every player...I was in Miami...we talked to a lot of the kids as a normal policy...we do that as draft preperation even before their senior year...

Moss: ...A lot of things get talked about this time of year, won't comment, can't on other teams, sorry Mike (Reiss)

...More Questions...

...based on board now, and on what our Welker pick would have been, I feel good about that trade, I like Welker as a player, he's versatile, glad we did that...we're in a waiting mode until the 3rd....we were all perfectly willing to do the trade...can't separate out player's attributes, can't separate...there were a number of options at 28, good ratings on players at board, several trade options, we made what we felt was the best decision...trade wasn't affected by possibility of Samuel holdout (reporter's words)...I wouldn't have predicted Quinn slide...string of defensive picks...I, and others, expected that...Staley, others at end indicative of offensive value at end...quality players early on...overall value of next year's pick is good value overall based on way we evaluate situation...too early to evaluate draft...we prepare for all drafts the same...like studying for final exams...don't know how board will unfold, but try to prepare as well as possible...good opportunity for all teams to improve...regardless of free agency.

-end-

Sorry BB. You didn't get good value in the trade. Not when you consider what Dallas got.

I agree, but Dallas really isn't a fair comparison. There was no Brady Quinn hanging around at 28.

No. There was a Joe Staley. A guy who will probably be a damn good starting LT for at least 5 years if not more.

I think you may be overrating Staley a bit. We're talking about a late-1st round pick here. Levi Brown? Joe Thomas? Yes. But Staley isn't exactly top value in the draft.

I like Staley a lot, but it's all about supply and demand. Dallas had Cleveland over a barrel and Dallas knew it.

Honestly, I think both things are true: Dallas got an uncommonly good deal and New England got a bad deal. A middle-of-the-road deal at 28 would have been #76 + the 2008. That I'd be ok with, it would at least give you room to maneuver. #110, ugh.

I'll take the 49ers pick all day long 2008 first rounder. fourth rounder. ( I do agree maybe a third rounder. But you can't tell me the 49ers with Alex Smith is going to be good.

Has anyone looked at the SF schedule? They're gonna suck!
Sep 10 Arizona 10:15pm
Sep 16 @St. Louis
Sep 23 @Pittsburgh
Sep 30 Seattle
Oct 7 Baltimore
Week 6 BYE
Oct 21 @N.Y. Giants
Oct 28 New Orleans
Nov 4 @Atlanta
Nov 12 @Seattle
Nov 18 St. Louis
Nov 25 @Arizona
Dec 2 @Carolina
Dec 9 Minnesota
Dec 15 Cincinnati
Dec 23 Tampa Bay
Dec 30 @Cleveland

Our #28 for thier first straight-up would have been worthwhile, the 4th is a bonus. Sure it wasn't a Dallas-caliber trade, but we didn't have Dallas-caliber leverage (ie. Quinn) either.

They were trading for players not draft slots. Don't compare Staley to Quinn . . . although I think the Browns took a BIG risk with that deal.

And if theres anyone that is sold on a tackle for this team, it was you, who whooped my ass all over this board on a Kazcur/Ocallaghan thread a few months ago............
