I have some opinions, but it's interesting how uncertain I am after years of being utterly confident and utterly wrong. I still think Larry Johnson, Chris Snee, Corey Webster and Bobby Carpenter should be on this team.

I'll try to pull my thoughts together and get my first round board up for debate, if only to have BB disprove it later.

I'm totally jazzed about Saturday.

Grubbs and Harrell are first round values where the Pats are picking. Harrell appears capable of playing either NT or DE, with a year to develop he is ready to step into Mike Wright's shoes should someone sign Mike to an RFA offer sheet. Grubbs is considered to be one of the more mobile Guards in the draft. I'd be surprised if he was selected, given both the success the Pats have had with Hochstein and Yates, and the depth concerns at other positions, but he would appear to be a good value.

Griffin's a consensus first round Safety, I personally don't think the best Safety values are in the first round. My Safety focus is a round later with Weddle, Piscitelli, and Gattis. All ballhawks equivalent to Griffin if not a smidgeon better at getting their hands on the ball. All good in run support and coverage.

This answers part of my question, but I have to ask the rest. Besides Griffin, you also omitted Nelson and Merriweather. Would your answer be the same for them. Also other picks widely associated with the Pats in the first round like Harris, Woodly, Spencer, Moses, etc are not mentioned or put in the second round. I would find your reasoning worth listening to.

My thought process of the moment: of the players slotted on your board, which are likely to be worth more to the Patriots than to other teams? Justin Harrell, for instance, would be a nice addition to the Pats but much more than that to the many teams desperate for a DT. So while he's on my round-1 list, I think he's an unlikely pick; he'll either go higher or the Pats will dangle him as bait for a trading partner with a high 2nd.

Oh, one more thing...I have to ask about your Ryan Kalil slot. I like the player a lot, but can he possibly improve the team enough to be worth a 1st-round pick? Where do they play a pure center when they already have a very good young pure center signed long-term?

If I knew for sure and certain that Meriweather is not a character risk, then I'd consider him for CB, I want a little more size at Safety after watching Antonio Gates put Gus Scott on IR and Mike Anderson put James Sanders on sick, lame, & lazy in 2005. Nelson reportedly has trouble with playbooks, he is also another small FS who I'd prefer to see at CB.

Harris is a priority second rounder, as is Woodley, should the Pats be unable to trade back I'd be comfortable with taking one of those lower ranked players for their value/fit for the Pats (as opposed to their generic NFL value). I don't consider Spencer a good fit at OLB, I think he's a better 4-3 DE in the Dwight Freeney mode. Moses just has too many question marks, he also looked stiff and uncomfortable watching him doing LB drills at the Combine and did not impress me in the Senior Bowl.

Kalil is considered the best technician as an OL in this draft (Mankins was considered the best technician at LT in his draft), he bulked up from the Senior Bowl and weighed in at 299 when he put on that athletic display at the Combine. That puts him 11 pounds lighter than Mankins and 6 pounds lighter than Neal. I believe Koppen could slide over and play Guard, so Kalil playing Guard isn't that much of a stretch for me. Does he make the team that much better? Perhaps not, I'd more likely "reach" down for a "need" player, but he is a good value at the end of round one and would appear to be an upgrade over Hochstein, Yates, and Mruczkowski with his mobility. I can live with that.
