"Top draft deals

The Patriots are interested in trading out of the first round if the opportunity presents itself in this weekend's NFL draft. The interest in a trade involving draft picks for draft picks is not surprising given the team's history.

Since vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli and head coach Bill Belichick teamed up to run the Patriots' football operation in 2000, they have made 21 trades involving solely picks as the draft was taking place. The 2001 and 2003 drafts marked the high points, with six pick-for-pick deals apiece during the draft."

What's interesting about this is Reiss language, He's not usually one to go out on a limb with unsourced speculation. But here we have the Patriots are interested, not might be or could be, but are.

Is the FO perhaps using him as a herald to the rest of the league to take a look at one of these two picks?

We have 10 picks of which 4 are untradeable kind. SO i can then move one first rounder to next year as we do not have too many rooster spots.

or is he being used to disseminate disinformation?

For what??

I figure they'll throw out as much disinformation as possible to obscure just precisely what their gameplan is. I don't know why they would trade down as there figures to be quite a few players around between 24 and 28 -- though who knows.

Although this is a pretty vague statement, almost to the point of being meaningless.

I don't think so , we already knew this from the recent Patriot's All Access show when they mentioned that they had already received calls from other teams wanting to move down or up in the draft. Draft deals are BB & SP's forte using draft picks as coin of the realm for concentrated draft time movement and banking of picks for coming years. As usual it'll be fun to watch how it all takes shape.

I will have to eat crow if this happens.

i think Patriots are interested in anything really. They dont mind moving up..moving down..trading for next year..trading for a player.

Beioli are open to everything that can help us

Why wouldn't they be? This is a draft that almost all experts think has less than 20 legit first round graded players.

That doesn't mean they will trade back but if you can move back to round 2 and gain a pick either this year or next that is better value than picking a guy with a 2nd round grade in round 1 which is likely what they will be doing at 24 and 28.

There is a general feeling that in this year's draft after the first 10-15 picks, there isn't much difference between the 11 to 16th pick and the 5o-something pick. Pats are rumored to be interested in David Harris who would probably be around early to mid second round, so why not trade down to get him and pick up more current and/or future picks to do so.

I don't think the Pats will make a move until it is time to pick at 28, but sending feelers out there just gets the ball moving if they decide that they want to trade down.

This is gonna sound trite as hell, but they will do what is best for the team.. do not pay attention to all the details, but have heard after the first 15 or so picks it is pretty much a crapshoot after that. They will do what they have to do to make this team stronger.

I just don't see how lying about this would help them.

Recently in PFT a "source" guaranteed that the Pats would take D. Harris at #28. According to profootballweekly Harris is rocketing up boards, and some personnel people feel he is the 2nd best LBer in the draft. Harris will likely be taken in rd 1 whether or not the Patriots select him. If another team covets Harris, they may have felt the need to skip in front of the Pats to grab him after reading the profootballtalk report (yes, teams are currently monitoring rumors in the media). Late 1st/early 2nd rd clubs that could be interested in a rd 1 LBer are the Chargers, the Bears, the Colts, the Ravens, the Lions... The report from Reiss creates confusion as to whether leapfrogging the Pats will be necessary, or just wasteful. It is another way of obscuring the Pats' true intentions and clouding the mind of the competition with doubt.

Really funny . I have yet to master the art of typing....english is my 3rd language ...makes for some funny moments :D .

It's also said to be a draft where once the top 8-10 stud players are off the board there is a fairly precipitous drop off, but the next level of players are ranked fairly equally - ergo a deep talent value draft for the top 100. Since we don't have a 2nd rounder and pick late in the 3rd and 4th, they would probably prefer to have multiple picks between 33-100 (with additional ammo to maneuver around) rather than overdraft 2 players in the first. This also ties in with the talk that a couple of teams that were thought to be in the QB hunt may decide to go elsewhere with their top 10 picks hoping to pick up one of the second tier QB's with their early second round pick. If those second tier QB's inch up too far they could miss them early in the second, so a couple of teams are reportedly interested in trading into the tail end of the 1st to insure they get both one of the top tier position players and a potential starting caliber QB on day 1.

Of course it could also be a little disinformation campaign designed to spook some other teams with similar needs and late round 1 picks into bailing out of the late 1st round leaving players we covet behind for the taking.

Somewhere in Gillette Belioli are sitting on a BB wish list we know nothing of - which is as it should be. And part of that wish list could be not just players but having 4-5 day 1 picks in 2008 when we will have no comps.

GMs make these "weak draft, only 10 good players" comments every year, and every year they're full of $hite. In the "weak draft" of 2005 Logan Mankins, maybe the best guard in the NFL, was available at #32. The problem isn't that there aren't enough good players, it's that the GMs can't tell who the good players are. If the Pats trade down it's not because there aren't enough good players, it's because there are too many and the Pats want more of them.
