PFT: "Write it down" that Pats select Harris with 28th pick

I'd be happy if the Pats took Harris, but not in the first round.

why? Hes a early 2nd prospect..and he fits our scheme better than any LB in draft

his question was speed and he proved he can run

So why don't we take a player that is a 1st round prospect? I can understand the pick if no one else falls to the Pats.

because he fits better than Willis..Beason..Timmons. Hes safer..hes a thumper. Hed play like Ted Johnson. Hes a late 1 prospect to some but was a 2nd before 40.

believe me..i like Beason-Willis-Timmons more but Harris is a much better fit or a "safer" one

Yeah - I don't think he'll be there... though looking at the mocks it doesn't seem like there's the traditional run on LBs that there normally is. Lots of WRs coming off the board, DEs etc...

I think a quality LB will be there for the taking - even in the 2nd if the Pats trade down.

Unfortunately I think if they want their type of Safety they will need to move up - THAT's where the run on position players is taking place this year (and no one's convinced me yet that Merriweather can behave either)

How disappointing, there's only two LB's I like out of the whole lot and they're both from MI. As far as safety, don't be surprised if they take an undersized LB and convert him slowly behind Wilson.

Not every player taken in the 1st round will be a "1st round prospect." Every year you hear of teams saying they only had 19 or 20 prospects graded into the 1st round.

I read that one team last season graded Jay Cutler as a 2nd rounder and Vince Young as a 3rd rounder.

No matter who we take, there will be teams that would have waited longer, and there will definately be players taken before us that we would have waited on.

A lot of teams will take a player early if they feel he wont be there in the next round if they really need the position filled. The Pats did that with Mankins because they knew the team a couple picks later needed an OL. (I forget which team it was, maybe Seattle or SF) I think the Seahawks took Tatupu early too.

You are correct on Tatupu he was projected about 3-4

Intresting points you made there about the QB's. What about Alex Smith in 2005? Many scouts didn't think he was that great either and if he entered the 2006 draft, he would have been a 2nd round prospect at best. If the Pats indeed take Harris, I will trust their decsion because they obviously know more that us and seen more film than us. Harris would be a nice addition.

Well if we did....this is the only picture I found of him on google. Kind of cool. :D

Cool pic, isn't that Maroney that he's tackling?

FWIW, I heard an ESPN analyst on the radio say a team front office guy told him that his team had 12 players with first round grades this year. He also said all calls his team was getting were from teams in the teens trying to trade out of round 1.

Trying to tackle, at any rate. :D

As I posted on the other forum, though--

Something strikes me as not-so-kosher here. Think about it for a second: if teams "know" they want David Harris, and the Pats plan to take him at 28 (and why 28 and not 24, if they're that certain about it?), wouldn't that give teams at 25, 26, and 27 added leverage for teams looking to trade up to get him?

HOBBSOWNSCOLES, BELICKICKAHOLIC & CRAZY PATRIOT GUY, you are all correct. I recall a year ago (maybe two) an interview with Pioli. He stated that teams value players differently due to the systems they play. Draft boards hold different value due to teh fact of the system teams play. A perfect example is Patrick Willis. A team that plays a cover two might value him more and give up more picks to acquire him. Where a team like the pats might take him with the #24, they won't fork over additional picks to acquire him.

So the simple reason is players are valued differently by different teams due to the system they play.

I'd be happy if the Pats took Harris, but not in the first round.

Why? Just because most mock drafts don't have him in the first round? Most didn't have Logan Mankins in the first round either. Most didn't have Ben Watson there too.

I don't get the logic that says we shouldn't draft a guy projected to go mid to high second round with the fourth to last pick in the first round. It isn't like the Bills last year using the 13th pick to pick up a player that would probably be available in the second round. We're talking about the 28th pick.

Heck, Asante Samuel was considered a reach by many where we took him in the fourth round and now people are talking about paying him as one of the highest paid CBs in the league.

The Pats do not use the syndicated scouting reports that the majority of the teams do. That means their draft board is different than many other teams.

Who gives a damn what some little draft nik says. I trust BB/Pioli to know the system THEY'RE running. Mankins was a reach, and is also a monster run blocking. I could give a damn who is a reach, I want the guy who fits our scheme. Until the day comes where this stops winning I'll actually think to question them. Until then, I'll atleast be patient and atleast give the player time to pan out before I question his decision.

I like the read up on this guy, he sounds like a solid prospect. Honestly, the only game I really watched of Michigan was when they tore my Irish a new one, and when USC mopped them up. So I don't claim to know to much about the guy. I like the read ups on him though. Hell, who knows. This could be abuncha BS. It could also be real too ;)

The only time I care about a reach is when the guy you select is going to be most likely available with you next pick or at least in area where you can trade up without giving up too much. Since Harris defintely won't be around when we pick again and will likely be selected within the 5-10 picks after ours because of the lack of quality LBs in the draft, why would I be upset that the Pats select Harris with the 28th pick if they feel he is the best player available?

It's good to know that we can now post duplicate threads -- one in the draft forum and one here. This new found freedom may prove valuable this week.

Oh BTW, look out for Harris going to N.O. at #27 -- they're fond of each other.

Totally agree. Who cares if who we get is a reach to these "experts". You've just gotta trust Beoli when they draft. They have constantly been sucessfull in first round picks.

So really who the hell gives a damn where they are projected. If Beoli wants the guy at #28 they'll get him even if he is a round 2 prospect.

Unless the Jets get him first. Or the Jets could be using him as subterfuge so that the Pats will take him at 24 and then the Jets could take a specific CB their after at 25. Oh forget it, I'm outta here, nite all.

I know. Check out my previous response. I have pretty much come to the conclusion that whoever Bioli select, he will probably be the right choice whether we like it or not (just not another TE or D-Lineman please). We all have our hearts set on some player in the draft, but we don't get to see what NFL front offices see. For example, they get to see an ample amount of game film and set up personal interviews with players. Whereas, us fans only get to see "highlight" film and whatever games we saw on television this year. Most fans go by what the "experts" rate players, but in the past, most draft grades do not come close to NFL's draft boards. Honestly, the only player that I was sure of last year was Reggie Bush because I watched every USC game that he played in his college career. On the other hand, I think anybody in the United States would be sure of Reggie Bush as well. To be honest, the only film I saw of Laurence Maroney was a highlight film on the internet which then made me want the Pats to draft him, even though I have never seen the guy play. The point I'm trying to make is, I haven't seen too many of these college prospects play because I'm too busy following the NFL players. We can only rely on what we have seen through college games and "highlight" film on internet draft profiles provided by CNNSI/NFL (which is really good). To conclude, we really don't know who is graded a first round prospect or not, what we do know is, Bioli has a great track record and I believe they will chose the best player to improve their football team. Indeed if they chose David Harris with the #28th pick, I will be excited because he will help inject some needed youth in our aging Linbacker corps.

P.S. How funny would it be if the Jets take David Harris with the 25th pick? I wouldn't be surprised if this happens because when Mangini finds out what players Belichick wants, Mangini will want to take him first.
