Rick Gosselin's second mock has the Pats selecting:

24. New England Lawrence Timmons OLB Florida State
COMMENT:
An old LB corps gets younger

28. New England Brandon Meriweather S Miami
COMMENT:
Cover safeties are hard to find
For comparison, his first mock had the Pats picking:

24. John Beason
28. Joe Staley

---

Note: Gosselin's selections from his first two mocks are based on his positional rankings, which are compiled from conversations with GMs, coaches, scouts, etc.

Once the team needs are defined, his picks are based on the available players at the time of selection. If you look closely at the Pats picks, he has their primary needs defined as LB and Safety:

In mock #1, he slotted us OLB Beason @ #24, in mock #2, OLB Timmons @ #24.

In mock #1, he slotted us S Griffin @ #28, in mock #2, S Meriweather @ #28.

Personally, I don't think Beason and Timmons are the best fit at LB for the Pats. But Gosselin isn't matching the players to teams based on who fits best, but rather -- based only on his rankings.

In his final mock (released close to the draft), Gosselin may have more inside info as to which prospects are highly sought after by specific teams. On this note, in the '06 draft, Gosselin correctly matched 9 of the first 10 teams. And overall in round one, 15 of his 32 selections were correctly identified.

Give me either Staley ,Harrell,Ross,Meriweather or Griffin. If the Pats stay where they are right now I can see 2 of the 5 above in Pats uniforms next year. My picks would be 1)Ross, 2)Staley 3)Griffin 4)Meriweather 5)Harrell.

Explain why you'd want Aaron Ross on the team? Here are some of the negatives on him from NFLDRAFTSCOUT.COM

Lacks field intelligence and will bite on pump fakes and misdirection...
Struggled with academics earlier and might have problems digesting a complicated playbook.
Marginal tackler who prefers to take a side or grab rather than face up, wrap and secure.
Generates a lot of pass interference penalties due to his penchant of constantly grabbing at the receiver's jersey heading down field.

Liability in zone coverage, as he is late to locate the ball and lacks a good feel for handling the switch-off

Everything I read says that Ross is NOT a Patriots-type player.

Also, I don't see Harrell getting drafted by the Patriots. I just don't see him fitting in at DE for them.

I completely agree with you on Aaron Ross, but I like Justin Harrell.

If Beason is still on the board at 24, I believe we would take him over Timmons. I wouldn't be surprised if we take both Beason and Posluszny if the draft falls like this. We really need some youth at LB. Meriweather would be tough to pass up but Gattis and Wendling would be there in the 3rd and would be more talented then any 3rd Rd LB that would be available.

You would use TWO first round picks for players who will spend most of the year on the bench? Make no mistake, we have four solid starters.

That is not a given, Wendling has risen fast.

Make no mistake, the Patriots are very thin at LB and ONE injury puts one of those rookies in the starting line-up.

The way things are right now, I don't see any draft pick other than taking Staley as someone who would be starting right away. Unless the Pats traded away Samuel, and then they'd have a rookie CB rotating in, more than likely.

But, lets be honest. There aren't a lot of holes on this team in general. And very few starting jobs really up for grabs.

I disagree, I think we have MANY holes. LB,DB, OL & RB are far from strengths on this team, and despite the cast of thousands that make up our WR corp, none of them are allstar calibre. The signings, especially Adalius Thomas give the LB corp flexibility, but none of the LB's are under 29. Our DB's will be a major weakness if Samuel get's traded or holds out. Our OL had troubles opening up holes for our RB's. And we really don't have a good power back to team with Maroney.

The draft can help fill some of these holes. Bruschi and Harrison have missed a lot of time lately, and we need to rebuild those two areas.

Maybe you should go and look at how many roster spots would be filled currently. And maybe you should read some of my other posts before spouting what I already KNOW.

I can live with Timmons. He doesn't meet alot of ideal requirements for Patriot draft picks and 3-4 ILBs, and he would be a project. But by year 3 if nurtured slowly he could become a very solid player. Alot of fans would be down on him for a year or two until he blossoms. But there is talent there. Antwan Barnes is a Timmons clone who would be available in rd 3-5. In an ideal world I would rather take a flier on a project like Barnes later than take Timmons early, but I could live with Timmons. I'll pass on Merriweather.
