Me too, but I was recording it anyway.

Man, I love this show. Listening to Pioli talk is just...special.

Dimitroff is doing a tour of the scouting areas and giving a walk-through of the process in drafting Mankins.

Re: All Access

They're showing some of the Pats' scouting books and their computer database, but some of the information is censored.

This is a very good all access. Bill.B talking about the draft and his 2 1st rounds picks. This show should be an hour.

Re: All Access

Adalius Thomas likes Bo Jackson, will play golf after football, is allergic to shellfish, isn't good at math, and wants to visit Europe.

Re: All Access

Lots of teams want the Patriots to trade picks in the 1st round. They want to move down while the Pats move up. Said lots of calls from teams picking higher.

That's VERY interesting. I wonder if they would consider moving up and for who? I can't wait for this draft to start.

Re: All Access

The next All-Access will be Saturday, May 5.

Re: All Access

Re: All Access

Re: All Access

Thomas Dimitroff, Director of College Scouting: "We actually start in the springtime. All of our scouts are responsible to contact the schools in their respective areas, to find out who in fact the upcoming pro prospects really are. Across the country, we come up with approximately 1,500 names at the onset of the season and then we go forward."

Pioli, 2006 scouting meeting: "If you guys don't weed them out, and identify the right ones, and throw out the wrong ones, it's going to slow down the top end of the process."

Dimitroff, Patriots' video storeroom (wall-to-wall tapes): "Here is one of the rooms that houses a fraction of the point-of-attack tapes. We will probably come up with 600 to 800 point-of-attack tapes every season on these prospects."

Narrator, over a paper version of scouting reports: "Using the drafting of Mankins to help illustrate the draft process, a report, written from a scout's perspective is generated after his senior season, such as this one, dated 11/14/2004."

Scouting Report: "...super guy, and everything you want...lifts hard, watches tape and...is on time for everything..."

Scouting Report: "In the NFL he is an offensive guard, and solid back-up as a rookie...could play in a pinch if needed."

Dimitroff: "After the bowl season, we move into the All-Star season. This is a point where we're able to see all these players - at least the top players - against the top competition in the country. At that point, we'll not only evaluate the players against the top competition in practices, but we also have an opportunity to interview these players for the first time. This is a time when we call it 'massage the board' - getting our prospects more in line, again, all the way up to draft day."

Narrator, over Harvard Stadium Pro Day: "Next come on-campus visits, where position coaches can work out potential prospects."

Narrator, over video of Pioli meeting a prospect in an office: "Stadium visits are also included in the final stages of the information-gathering process."

Dimitroff: "From the outside, it may be perceived as redundancy - 'You see them at All-Star games, you evaluate them for 10 months, you've been at the combine, enough's enough' - well, it's not enough in the NFL. So, this is one last look to visit with the players, see them in their setting. No longer are they feeling as uptight as they may be at the combine. And you truly glean information from that as well."

Narrator, over Mankins' paper scouting report: "All of the information will be condensed into a final report. On April 18, 2005 - 5 days before the draft - this was written about Mankins: 'Logan is a good on-field competitor, who is aggressive to finish and plays snap to whistle...for the Pats, will come in Year 1 and start.' The only negative is an injury red flag. Mankins tore his ACL and missed his entire junior year."

Narrator, over a shot of Mankins' 2007 database page, complete with player information (accrued seasons, etc.), historical scouting reports, and scouting ratings - then JaMarcus Russell's page: "Once all the reports have been written, the information is loaded into the personnel department's centralized database. From the starting point of 1,500 prospects, 150-200 potential draftees will be just a click away, ready to be viewed by Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli."

Dimitroff, over Mankins' paper page with a curiously censored character paragraph that follows the following line "No character problems. Quiet. Small town kid. (censored area): "We have a process set-up here that I think is very succinct, and provides Scott and Coach Belichick with information right in front of them on one or two pages, outlining the players' talents, his character, any brushes - it's a snapshot for them to review over and over again. It's very valuable."

Belichick interview transcript coming up next.

Re: All Access

Mike Lynch: "Just 7 days away from the NFL Draft. I think fans might be interested - what's your typical day like at this stage, counting down to the draft?"

Bill Belichick: "Kind of like studying for a final exam. You've got a lot of information, but you keep going back over things, and maybe go over a few new things - review the medical, review your draft value system for potential trades, things like that. Maybe if you get into a conversation about 'Look, there's this guy...' - maybe you go back and look at them together and maybe you haven't made that comparison between those two particular players and get a little better feel for it. But it's similar to the final exams. You don't know what the question is going to be, because you don't know how it's going to fall, so you just try to compare on a lot of different levels."

ML: "Does any new information come in this late, this close to the draft? Can anything change on any player?"

BB, half-jokingly: "Oh sure, there's information coming in all the time."

ML: "Really?"

BB, half-jokingly: "Oh yeah, 'this team's going to do that, this team's dropping, this guy's falling, this guy's got some sort of problem, random injury, he'll never play again, and all that. So, you deal with those kind of swirling rumors all the way up to draft day. Some of them you have to check out, some of them are just rumors."

ML: "How often does the phone ring with offers from other teams trying to move up, trying to take one of your first round picks?"

BB: "You know, it varies, but I'd say this year has been more active than in the past. We have two first round picks, and we're the only team that has that. We've had a lot of teams talk to us about them moving down and us moving up. Moreso than usual. And I think the read on that is other teams like where we're sitting. And I think that they're seeing, that if they're picking up in the teens somewhere, the high teens maybe, a 2-for-1 deal - give up their pick and drop down to where we are at 24, 28."

ML: "How important is the character issue when you're putting everything into the mix there?"

BB: "Well, I think when you take a player you get everything. You get his character, you get his intelligence, you get his speed, you get his strength, you get his work ethic. You get all those things. So, you just have to decide when all is said and done what value you're going to place on the player. Some guy might be a little faster, some guy might have a little bit more experience, some guy might be in a lower level of competition. You weigh and factor all of those things in and then you decide what grade to put on him, and that's what his value is, and even though he's a lot different from another player with that same grade, you're saying the overall value is about the same. If you're going to reject him, then you should just reject him - it doesn't make a difference what his grade is - whether that's a medical reject, a character reject, or what have you."

ML: "You were at the Final 4. I know Billy Donovan is a friend of yours. Have you ever been to a championship game before?"

BB: "In lacrosse, not basketball."

ML: "Pretty exciting. Now Mike Ditka told Jim Nance that the whole tournament is the greatest show on Earth, that it's even a bigger spectacle than the Super Bowl. Certainly a little bit of a reach for Ditka. Let's just say consider the source, OK? But tell me about - I've been to a semi-final, but I haven't been to a championship and it just blew me away when I walked into the atmosphere."

BB: "It is. There's a lot of enthusiasm. And of course you have the two schools that have a lot of the college tradition, the college spirit, and so forth, heightened by a championship game. You know, it was very exciting. Two good teams, and the way they matched up, they certainly put on a very competitive game. It was fun. I've never been to one before, and it was a great atmosphere. It was a great game and I was very happy for Billy and his team, especially the players. You know, that was a team that won last year, they were all underclassmen, they all made a commitment to each other, they came back, and they won again. You know, I was really happy to see that. They made a commitment to each other and they upheld it and they deserved to win."

ML: "Listen, I'll let you get back to your homework. Good luck on your exam next week."

BB: "Thanks Mike."

Re: All Access

Thanks. :)

Re: All Access

Awesome job, Pats1!! :rocker:

Re: All Access

REALLY appreciate the work that went into that, pats1. Thank you!

Re: All Access

Between running back and forth at my house from the grill to the Sox Yankees game to pitching whiffle balls to my kids I completely blanked on this one. Thanks Pats1 you the man (as usual).

Re: All Access

Yes, thanks pats1. For those of us who don't live in NE anymore this is GREAT information.

I wonder what the BB & Co. are going to do in this draft? This should be a very exciting day 1. I can't wait until the draft!

Thanks for posting Pats1. A very good read and just what I needed as we turned the corner for the final week before the draft. After reading what BB said I think I'd like us to stay put with the two first rounders. Seems like there's very good value in that area. I think it comes down to what position - LB or CB - starts going early. Last year most mock drafts had us taken an LB but they all went off the board pretty quick. If LBs start going early this year we should be able to grab one of the better DBs like Reggie Nelson at 24. If it's the DBs that end up going quick we should end up with a better LB. Like most I am hoping for one of each with 24 and 28. Either way we're gonna have two top prospects coming into camp with an already stacked team and I feel good about that.
