Woods has the talent to become a starter. By 2008 he will be able to start at OLB and play effectively. This is contingent on his offseason commitment. So far it seems like he has shed the immaturity label that Carr punished him for as a senior.

link please....I thought he has done a good job on ST.....Our starter are getting older, but still very good....Who know Woods might see the field other than on ST....

I hope so.

What exactly are you basing this on? I like the sound of it but it takes more than saying he has the talent to sway me. :)

What we do not know is how good Woods, Mays and Alexander really are, and if they fit into the long range plans of the Pats? Are they role/st players or do they have the ability to step up?? More will be know this year, as all have had a year of conditioning and reps in this system.

I think that Woods, at the very worst, will be the next Larry Izzo. At best, I can see he as a very good OLB if he can improve his coverage skills. Hopefully, he'll e given that chance.

Mays, I think is the equivalent of Dexter Reid back in 2004. OK special teamer, but not much else.

Alexander is a good special teamer, but I don't believe he's capable of being a coverage LB in this league. Maybe I am being unfair to him but, he was burned left and right and not just by Dallas Clark. But by players like Aaron Moorehead. So I don't see Alexander as a long-term solution.

The blemish on Woods was supposedly his lack of commitment and immaturity, the reported reasons for which Carr benched him as a senior. Prior to that, Woods had registered 7 sacks and 14 TFLs as a junior, leading Michigan in both categories. He was on the Nagurski and Butkus awards watch entering his senior campaign. Normally, but not always, talented players improve production between junior and senior seasons. Hypothetically, if Pierre had merely equalled his junior production his lost senior year, IMO he would have been a 2nd rd pick at a minimum considering his upper tier athleticism and rare size. But his benching led teams to justifiably consider him a problem child. Since then, Pierre has scrapped and clawed his way onto a roster spot as an UDFA, been a good soldier on special teams, and finished the year injury free at a high quality of ST play. He has removed the blemish of his senior season by demonstrating renewed commitment. With his team attitude and commitment to the game now proven commodities, and considering his junior year production + his rare size and athleticism+ performance as a college LBer, IMO Pierre has a higher probability to impact at 3-4 OLB than several of the most talked about prospects in this draft, including J. Moss, L. Woodley, and V. Abiamiri. In this draft, IMO the only prospects who have a higher probability to become quality starters at 3-4 OLB than Pierre are G. Adams and A. Spencer.

Hey look everyone - a compelling and well-reasoned football-based argument! Neat! Bless you, pony, for dragging the board's standards back up.

Where's Michigan Dave when you need him? I'd like to know his take re: Woods v. Carr.

I too feel that Woods has a better chance to make a significant contribution at his position than Alexander and Mays have at their position. In fact, if any 2 of Alexander, Mays and Larry "Setting the Edge" Izzo remain on the 53 by Opening Day, then the FO hasn't done its job.

If you think Woods can start at OLB, than let me introduce you to LaMarr Woodley:D

Woodley's a beast. Also, Anthony Spencer is a very good option.

Edit** I see you think Woods will be a better 3-4 OLB than Woodley? Ok, what are you going on? Woodley's college production, speed off the edge, leadership, and play recognition is much better than Woods' Also, Woodley is stout against the run. Really, I think Woodley is on another level. Michigan Dave will even tell you Woodley was the best player on that defense, and he was.

He responded to my question a few months ago, let me see if I can find it.

"Pierre had off-field issues at UM (that are NOT going to be discussed). THAT is why he was not playing. Unlike a certain sweatervested coach lackin morals, Lloyd makes sure that his players leave the program in good shape (whether they play in the NFL or not.) Pierre had the talent to start, and play well. But he could've gone down a Clarett-path without the right teaching."

"Dave, without discussing the specifics of the issues - have they been taken care of to your knowledge ? Is Woods now headed down the right path or is he a problem waiting to happen ?"

"I talked to Pierre briefly after the UM game last Saturday, and he seemed to be fine. His issues were more issues of maturity and needing to grow up. If LC had catered to him, and pampered him as a star, Pierre could've headed for trouble. I think having to deal with this adversity, and having to really bust his ass to earn a spot in the league was the best thing for him. He won't take anything for granted, and I can't see him regressing to do the things he did at Michigan that landed him in trouble. I've been wrong before, but I don't think he'll have any discipline problems.

to be honest I thought Woods had the potential to become a decent/good pro player, and I liked NE picking him up, because I think he could develop into that type of player. At the same time I think Woodley could be a good/great pro, especially coming off the edge in NE's defense. Woodley and Woods on this team would be very nice.

Thanks, BF. I remember that thread now. I wonder, who's that "sweatervested coach lacking morals" of whom Dave speaks? Tressel?

Just a reminder of Woods' pre-draft measurables:

6' 4"
249
40: 4.75
Vertical: 33"
Shuttle: 4.19 (!)
Cone: 6.87 (!)

Athletic talent was never the issue for him, and earning time on the field as a UDFA, plus a "practice player of the week" award, showed me a lot about his character growth.

I'm not ready to rank Woods above Woodley, but I do think he could be the secret weapon among the players currently on the roster. If he can earn some meaningful reps at OLB that would give the whole LB corps more flexibility and a different look.

I haven't seen anything from Woods in the base defense thus far to maek me think he is anything other than a ST demon at this point. I'm hoping a year in the system and a year under Woicik will allow him to make a quantum leap next season, but even if he does make that leap his only chance to get on the feild is via an injury to a starter.

This is what Pierre's HS coach (Ted Ginn Sr.) said about his benching:

"Our relationship with Michigan is dead, but Lloyd Carr is the one who's killed it. It's disgraceful."

Also, Pierre Woods was great in 2003, especially in the Rose Bowl, but for some reason he declined/fell out of favor with Carr.

Prescott Burgess was also greeted to a seat for part of the season in favor of Chris Graham.

! is right. Those numbers are better than Timmons' who is a LOT smaller.

With all the speculating on this site, we have no idea what type of off field problem?
