Bengals | Hartwell will visit team Thursday
Wed, 18 Apr 2007 20:05:39 -0700

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports free-agent LB Edgerton Hartwell (Falcons) will visit the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday, April 19, according to his agent Harold Lewis.

Just thought I'd throw it out there because it was earlier reported we had interest. Pats might be leaning towards waiting to see what happens in the draft before signing any other vets. Anyway, I'd prefer a young LB and drafting one (at least) early would be the best scenario for me. I think we got plenty of veteran LBs on the team (Seau might still be resigned too), we need some young fresh bodies to come in get dirty.

Hartwell would still be a great young body to come in and get dirty. What is he, 28?

Hmmm...does he have a criminal history?

Yeah, I think he's 28. But I meant I want to see a prospect LB drafted to develop into a future starter, say take Bruschi's place next year. LB is a difficult position to learn in our system, especially for rookies, but by bringing one in and developing him slowly would be the ideal situation imo. Guys who are close to their 30's can still get the job done, but at you have to keep in mind the next few years. On a similar note, wasn't the last LB we drafted in the 1st round Andy Katzenmoyer? Too lazy to look it up myself.

If this guy has anything left, I'd like to see the Pats sign him as

the last piece of the free agent puzzle. He would give us a little

depth at middle linebacker.

Most of him is 28 but his knees, alas, are nearing retirement age.

If not Ed Hartwell, then how about:
Isaiah Kacyvenski
Junior Seau
Orlando Huff
Randall Godfrey
Chris Claiborne
Carlos Emmons
James Darling
Al Singleton
Brandon Short
Ben Taylor
Wali Rainer
Raonall Smith

After re-watching the AFCC, I am (and have been) disheartened that the FO has not signed any ILBs or Safeties to help a defense that allowed 32 points in the last half of football it played.

Just signing a body is not going to help much unless that body has a talent that provides value. I would have to imagine that the loss of:

Harrison
Hawkins
Sanders
Wilson
Gay
Wright

As well as the injury/illness of:

Seymour
Wilfork
possibly Warren

had much more to do with NE allowing 32 points that not having Edge Hartwell of Chris Claiborne on the bench. Add to that the fact that NE's best offensive weapons in that game, Faulk and Dillon, both missed almost the entire second half.

Don't read too much into one half of football where NE clearly had about 10 strikes against them. They will be a solid defense even if not another LB is brought in.
