Lions trade number 2 overall to the Bucs for Simeon Rice and #4 overall.

Win-win, really. Rice would be a familiar face to Marinelli, he fits what they want to do on defense, they desperately need a pass rusher, and Rice has always wanted to go back to Chicago...Detroit's a poor man's Chicago.

The Lions have reportedly been trying to trade back. With the fourth pick, they can take whomever's left of Quinn, Thomas, Peterson, Adams, or even trade back again with a team that covets Quinn or Adams.

Gruden wants Calvin Johnson badly.

If Millen has any brains - and at this point all the evidence suggests he doesn't - he will draft Johnson himself. Millen is afraid of how much ridicule he will take for drafting yet another WR, but past failures should not turn you away from doing the correct and intelligent thing.

I"m convinced that the Lions want Gains Adams and with the Browns unlikely to go in that direction (drafting 3 LB high last year), anything the Lions get is good for them.

I don't think Quinn is a lock at Cleveland. I think it's Adrian Peterson or Joe Thomas.

Well, we'll see. Unless you have a GREAT team around him you can't do anything with an average or less QB and the Browns have sh!t there IMO. If you can get the QB you get him . . . and that's what I think the Browns will do.

I believe I heard Mike Mayock make an interesting comment recently. The Browns GM was the same one who made the personnel decisions during the Ravens SB run. Their QB, Trent Dilfer.

Anothe runoticed point is the # 4 slot pays a lot less then the # 2, so the Lions would also be saving some salary cap room, though it won't be much. I think the Lions need Brady Quinn or Jemarcus to be honest, they simply can't draft Calvin...Roy Williams is very good. Gaines Adams would def fit but I think the locals would be unhappy to pass on a QB.

Well, first off that's not true because Ozzie Newsome was the decision maker although Savage had strong input.

Second, although they won a SB with Dilfer they replaced him after the season (admittedly to poor effect).

Third, Savage was also there when they traded for Kyle Boller (again, admittedly to poor effect).

Fourth, the Browns are a long way from having a team that can win despite it's QB and likely will never get there.

Three-way WAT By DW Toys
I present a new three-way trade that has been explored and whispered in part already.

The teams involved:

The Browns, Redskins (definitely two teams that have to get better, quickly) and the Patriots because they are the only team with two first-round picks and 10 total selections in this draft. They can afford to move down.

The Browns have a dilemma. They want a franchise QB and Brady Quinn is more ready with his Charlie Weis instruction, and more coach-able than JaMarcus Russell. I don’t care what the experts say. Look at Jeff George and his arm. Don’t lead me down that path. Arm alone does NOT make a quarterback. More on that later. AND they would like Petersen!

The Browns are also desperate for an offensive tackle, defensive end and running back. If Quinn can just hand the ball off to Lewis and a kid named Adrian Peterson, Romeo Crennel’s job status might improve. We know the Browns would like to take Petersen to get better now, but do not pass on a franchise quarterback – ever! So what we have set up is a scenario where the Browns can have their cake and eat it too.

Next, the Redskins have many needs too. I don’t think this Jason Campbell is the answer at quarterback. Nice No. 2 guy maybe.
The Skins need more talent and also must get younger. Unfortunately, they have only one pick in the first four rounds.

Here we go:

The Patriots trade first-round picks (Nos. 24 and 28), offensive tackle Nick Kaczur (they have Ryan O’Callaghan and Wesley Britt in reserve) and defensive end Marquis Hill to the Cleveland Browns for starting inside linebacker Andra Davis (a Pats’ need; has experience in the 3-4), pick Nos. 36 and 104, and a first-round pick in 2008.

The Draft Value Board says the Browns numbers are 626 this year and if they have the 21st pick in 2008 (875) it will equal the 1,500 value points the Patriots are dealing. I am sure if they draft around 21st in 2008, that would be decent and allowing Romeo to keep his job. Of course the Pats get rich if the 2008 Browns pic is higher.

The Browns get two immediate starters. Kaczur will be the left tackle to protect either Quinn or Frye. Hill has on-the-field experience but wouldn’t play over the Pats’ present talent on the defensive line. He is so far, an underachieving 2nd rounder...But Romeo knows this kid and can work with him.

Now, the Browns get their franchise quarterback in Quinn. Mission accomplished! But they also get another prize. They trade (or even keep!!!!) the newly acquired Nos. 24 and 28 to the Redskins for the sixth-overall selection, and pick up Peterson if they so desire.

As for Washington, the Grand Poobahs of the all important "Trade Value Chart" say the Skins are getting gypped by 200 points! Yes, but with one draft choice until Round 5, this a no-brainer. Too many holes for one choice to fill. With Nos. 24 and 28, Washington could pick up outside linebacker Jon Beason and defensive end Anthony Spencer.

The Browns get:

* Washington's No. 6 (Adrian Peterson)
* Offensive tackle Nick Kaczur
* Defensive end Marquis Hill


The Redskins (if the Browns want Petersen) get:

* New England's No. 24
* New England's No. 28


The Patriots get:

* Cleveland's No. 36
* Cleveland's No. 104
* Cleveland's first-round pick in 2008
* Inside linebacker Andra Davis

It gets better for the Browns. They now do not have to panic for a LT or DE in the draft. They have two young talented guys from the Pats that can start.

My Mock for their remaining choices are:

Round 3-WR Smith-USC-Should be a good combo at WR with Edwards, Jurevicious and "the other" Steve Smith who would be all decent for 2007 and beyond, for Quinn or Frye targets.

Round 5-CB Wade-TN-Nice productive, speedy corner. Not much depth there with injuries and losses in the CB roster. A need.

Round 6-G Santucci-ND- A need as well. Will start in the NFL. A familiar face for Quinn helps too.

Round 7-NT Toeaina-Oregon-Nice size backup for a year older Washington.

The Redskins (if the Browns really want Petersen) get:

They have picked up a couple CBs in FA to fill those needs but they only had 19 sacks last year and the CBs can't cover forever out there. The D line was run porous. They also need a OG and some SS help. But now we come to the biggest issue. Is Campbell a starting NFL QB?

My Mock for their remaining choices are:

Round 1 #24-Beason-LB-Miami-A tackling machine who plays sideline to sideline. He can cover too. Great pic for the Skins.

Option 1a-Trade #24 to the Bears for OLB Briggs, This up or down the draft board deal for #6 was not working. Offering a unencumbered #1 would work. An instant upgrade for the talent challenged Skins "D".

Round 1 #28-Spencer-DE/OLB- Versatility that is a luxury with a good sized, fast player who can play hand down or in reverse and can certainly rush the passer. Solves a major need.

Option 1b-Trade #28 to the Chiefs for DE Jared Allen. A super motor-pass rusher. Contract dispute is festering with the Chiefs FO. This kid is young and quick and could make half of those 2006 Skins sacks (19) by himself. Dan will "show him the money"! He is worth it. Had a DUI issue but can be resolved. A decent kid, young with an upside for many years.

These two players together make the Skins defense immediately respectable.

The Skins have been allergic to draft choices the last few years. If so this year too, these two young player trades above make sense and an immediate impact. Now add ILB Fletcher-Baker and some of the new CB depth they picked up, with a DT choice for some depth picked up in the draft, the Skins would be tough. Now what about a QB?

Round 1 #28-Spencer-DE/OLB- Versatility that is a luxury with a good sized, fast player who can play hand down or in reverse and can certainly rush the passer. Solves a major need.

Round 5 Zabransky-QB-Boise St.-Maybe the mentally toughest QB in the draft. He brings that intangible,. He's a winner. He can make things happen with his legs. He is also one of the smartest QB's in the draft. I say he's the #1 QB in D.C. by end of season. A steal here. Poise and smarts. A decent but not rocket arm. Montana?

Round 6 Wrotto-G-G.Tech- Versitile. Can play G and T and brings toughness to the Skins OL as well as athleticism.

Round 6 Alford-DT-Penn St. Under the radar quick DT who can make plays. Quick. Pleyed in a good system. Should help the pass rush and shore up the middle against the run.

Round 7 Newton-S/WR/QB-South Carolina-Great athlete who sacrificed his career to play many positions for (former Skins head coach) Steve Spurrier. Good size and smart enough to play those multi-positions. Will be tried as a SS. Emergency QB to save a roster spot?

Finally, how do Bill Belichick and the Pats always do this so consistently? The drop down to get their guys and still pick up a possible number #1 high pick in 2008 (hey the Browns got two high first round top guys this year that they could not decide between, so it is not a bad deal for all concerned). The Pats get ILB depth and the Browns get two starters. Good trade.

My Mock for the Pats remaining choices are:

Round 2 McCauley-CB-Fresno State-A need with size and speed. Belichick knows Pat Hill at Fresno and he will give Bill the real skinny on why this kid had an off year. Too much talent to not do well in the Pats system.

Round 3 Woodley-DE/OLB-Michigan-Excellent high motor, good speed, hard hitting pass rusher, who the Pats can groom to a Willie McGinest style player.

Round 4 Piscatelli-SS-Oregon St.-Big, fast and productive. Some don't like him. Just watch the tape please! This kid has speed, can cover, plays great in the box like Harrison. He'll intimidiate!

Round 4 Henry-RB-Arizona-Speed, hands and size. Only started late at AZ but should have better mileage left than most RBs. Great back up for Maroney only he's bigger and faster. A sleeper pic.

Round 5 Denman-OT-Fresno St.-Another kid Bill B. can talk to Hill about. Rated the most underrated lineman in the draft. Can play left or right OT. They lose Kaczur and get this kid.

Round 6 Young-CB-Kent St.-One of the fastest CBs in the draft. Good size. Small school productive (look where Samuel came from, Central FL.). A need.

Round 6 Newton-TE-Oregon St.-The annual Belichick TE selection. He might be the most complete TE on the Pats roster in the end. Good size, he can block and soft hands. Not as fast as Watson, but a better blocker and also better receiver than K. Brady.

Round 6 Bishop-ILB-Cal. Big, run stuffing ILB who's hobby it says, is "throwing OG off to the side". Not much coverage range they say, but...the kid had three interceptions! Maybe the best ILB run stuffer in the draft. A Ted Johnson replacement. A tough guy.

Round 6 Samardzija-WR-ND-One of those baseball pics that could work out for the Pats down the road as WR is not a big need in 2007. Weis can talk this kid into being a Patriot. Good size and production. The Pats can wait on him.

Round 7 Thomas-NT-Miss.CC-A 6' 4" 370lb kid that runs a 4.9 40 yard dash. He dominated in some games (Texas vs. The World game) . Good backup for Wilfork. Faster than some LBs. A phenom perhaps? Needs Pats coaching up and Pees can do it.

Plus remember the Pats get the Browns #1 in 2008.

Exactly, at #4 the lions could still get an impact player because they need so many. Rice may be old but he's a playmaker. At #4 Detriot will be able to chose from two of Jarmarcus Russel, Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, Adrian Peterson or Brady Quinn. Any of those would be a good fit for Detriot plus you get a cheaper contract and an impact vet.

Good play for the Bucs because Calvin Johnson will stretch the field and make thier young QB and RB better. Rice may have been nearing the end of his career (at least with Tampa) anyway.

Bottom line:

If Johnson is still availalb e at #2, Millen should be able to extract a king's ransom for that pick. But Saturday morning, he and his staff should have reviewed scores of potential trades and analyzed which ones make sense and which should be ignored. He only has 15 minutes on the clock and should know exactly what will and won't work.

Of course this is Matt Millen so more than likely, he and his staff have probably spent the last 3 months playing poker, drinking beer and playing video games, while trying to remember what day the draft was this year and ignoring the phones ringing off the hook in the background.

I don't see the benefit from Tampa's point of view. They have decent WRs one of which is relatively young. There's a possibility Calvin could fall to them at #4 anyway.
