Felger said he heard from his sources that Samuel wanted to pull a Ty Law and lob personal attacks at the Patriots because he was so furious the Pats aren't willing to give him a Nate Clements type of deal. Samuel's agent had to talk him out of it and have him give a more controlled statement to the media. Samuel's agent realizes that if Samuel wants to play for the Pats, those personal attacks will get him nowhere.

If Samuel's agent can't continue to control him, it looks Samuel will either either shoot his way out of town or sit for most of the season.

Samuel is a decent player, but not worth the hassel. If we can get a first rounder, I say trade him away. Half a good season isn't enough to let him try to force us to give us an overinflated deal.

And before anyone makes that stupid arguement that he is the only guy we have who can cover Marvin Harrison, I recommend you go look at Harrison's post season performances since 2003 (No TDs and no games over 60 yards) and how Harrison has done going against Samuel in the last two regular season games (273 yards and 4 TDs).

I'd trade him for #1 in a second. Probably for a #2 this year and next.

If he were to hold out, how does that affect the cap ?

To Franchise him we have to allocate the money to him. Say it's not paid for 10 weeks. That's $5M or so that we had to allocate but not pay. Does that get credited to next year like the LTBE incentive that's not Earned ?

TRADE HIM! Where are these teams that want to pay him Clement money? Why have none of them come forward?

Well, as many have said here before, you have to take what Felger says with a grain of salt. However, the fact that the Pats signed Tory James today probably signifies things aren't going too well in Asanteville.

The James signing means nothing, its more for quality depth than anything else.

This kid was a fourth rounder. The Pats (or their system) made him a millionair today ($7.8m) and he wants to crap on them? You ought to be ashamed Assante. Hey everybody wants to make the top money they can, but sometimes it's not just about money. Assante, you had one good year.

I have a novel solution. We'll give you Clement money if you perform the way you did this year for the next four years. So what's that $8m per year?.....but if you go down one INT we take away $800,000 per less than 10. Is that a deal? You get 5 INT in 2007 and we pay you $4m.

at least Asante has a smart agent.

I would take ANYTHING Felger says with a grain of salt. We know two things about Felger, he pimps any player's demand for money, and "his sources" are suspect.

If Samuel were to hold out, the Patriots would free up around 458,235 in cap space for each week Samuel missed. The Pats would have to do the phony LTBE move on another player's contract in order to be able to move some, if not all, freed up cap space to the 2008 season. The Patriots could decide to use the cap space on injury replacements or extensions.

This the same Felger who reported that Moss to Green bay was done, right?

shefter said its a2.7million deal thats more than just a signing for depth

Prove to me how so. I did the math in another thread. He counts for a little more than 1% of the total cap.

Are you being serious? Is this really how you think the NFL works? Do you expect teams' GMs to hold press conferences informing everyone that they want to give Samuel "Clement money?"

So far, there has been no talk of trading Samuel from the Patriots' side of things. At this point, they are approaching the matter as though they will either resign Samuel, or have him play out the year on the franchise tender. If a team wants to sign him to an offer sheet w/out working out a trade w/ the Pats, they'd forfeit two first round picks, and nobody is suggesting Asante is worth that.

This means that any discussions of contract worth between other teams and Samuel is entirely speculative at this point. I'm sure Samuel has had some preliminary conversations about ballpark figures with other teams, but since it's entirely unknown whether the Pats are even interested in trading him, let alone what compensation they'd require, there's just no reason for other teams to begin negotiating in earnest w/ Samuel.

There are most definitely teams out there that will overpay for Asante Samuel, if/when the Patriots decide to start shopping him around.

Can the Pats withdraw the franchise tag at any time? If so, and if Asante held out, the Pats could forego the 6weeks + playoffs and cut him before week 10. He'd be a free agent but teams would not have the $$$ at that time, so he'd be stiffed. A possible risk for holding out.

I just hope this gets resolved and doesn't drag on like the Branch situation last year. I think it's clear that Asante has already won a Super Bowl and is much more interested in getting a mega stupid contract than continuing to win football games.

* maybe because that's not all the team would have to give up. They'd also have to work a deal with the Patriots or give up 2 1st round picks

If these statements are true, I think the Pats should trade him. Samuel is not worth the trouble or money. I responded to an earlier post regarding the importance of signing Asante Samuel. I noted that if the Pats are unable to re-sign him, their secondary would be terrible. I don't think that would be the case any longer because I predict that the Pats will draft two DB's with their 1st round picks. Who knows how long Samuel would be able to keep up his production after 3 mediocre seasons. Remember in '99 when Ty Law recieved his big pay day and struggled for a couple of seasons? The Saints would be a perfect trading partner for Samuel because the Saints have a pretty bad secondary. The only question is, are the Saints willing to pay Samuel? I think the Pats will probably end up trading Samuel on draft day, recieving a first rounder next year and a second rounder this year. We shall see.
