An article in today's Globe (April 14) reviews the 2004 draft. The 3 year window is based on Ozzie Newsome's opinion that a draft cannot be accurately judged until after 3 years have elapsed.
The article made me think about the overall roster and how players have been acquired. The numbers validate my initial impression, Day 2 picks are full of romance but rarely crack the starting lineup. The data also underscores how important it is to hit on the Day 1 picks something the Patriots have been very good at especially in round 1.
Looking forward we should expect both of the 1st rounders to eventually start with 3-4 of the other picks being on roster 3 years from now.
Analysis is based on data from patriots.com
Other Notes
- only one LB on the roster was drafted by the Patriots (Bruschi) and this was from a different FO (UDFAs - don't count they are technically FAs)
