I was reading this thread :

http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=126390

and stumbled on :

"and if that doesn't get done there is some early talks of Matt Cassel from NE"

It's a post by RD who's a Patriots and Trojans fan. Of course there's the obviousl USC conection with Cassel and Kippen but this is the first time I've seen any mention of this kind of talk.

If the Raiders trade for Matt Cassell and make him a starting QB that means 2 things.....

The Raiders will officially be considered a ******ed football team
and
Matt Cassell should have his life insurance increased with that poor excuse for a front line they have.

Matt Cassell is no starting NFL QB...Probably never will be and hope we never see it,Probably our FO will sucker and screw some other team who thinks he is that starting caliber type next year with some kind of deal of the century in favor of us ,but I think he is a lifer backup JMHO.

I have no idea what will ever happen with Matt Cassel, but this is a RIDICULOUSLY huge conclusion to jump to. Take a breath. How the Hell do you know he's "no starting NFL QB?" Based on WHAT?

The few times he played he did not impress me most of which were garbage time appearances of course, obviously no other teams but possible Extreme desperate ones are knocking down the door trying to lure him away.

He is IMO going to be the Kitna,Harrington,Carr ect of the league if you ask me and thats MY opinion,You have yours,I have nothing against the guy-he seems like a cool person to have on the team and glad Brady has a buddy to teach the proper QB fundametals of the game to,I just have a feeling hes not much more.

If Brady goes down and you think we still would have a legitimate chance to get to the Super Bowl with Cassell as starting QB then you will have earned the title 'Homie Of The Year'

Brady and Manning are probably the ONLY 2 QBs who are NOT replaceable on their respective teams.

It seems like Walter fills their quota for quarterbacks with good arms and zero pocket presence. It is nice how every rumor about the Raiders involves them being complete morons - and that only makes it more believable.

agreed.. poor previous comment... cassel was a hair from being the USC starting QB (and subsequently heisman winner), twice... the other two are "stars" in the nfl... cassel is the top "tradable" backup QB in the nfl now that schaub is traded... he looked great in his brief appearances.

last i looked, kitna, harrington, and carr were pretty high picks by people with better scouting info than you.

if bledsoe goes down, and you think our 50:1 team could win a SB with a 6th round qb pick... oh, nevermind that one..

every qb is replaceable... there are lots of great qb's besides our guy and frankenstein's monster... i remember watching the 80's niners, and i told a friend, their 3rd qb could start for teams... sure enough he did... of course, #1 and #2 went to the HOF, but #3 went on to QB a decent team... i think cassel is a starting nfl qb today... watch.

???

Last game of season the year before last. We had our slappies in the game, Miami had their first string defense in. Cassel played three quarters and brought us back from a 2 TD deficit, nearly won the game on the last play when after a last minute TD drive culminated with a 2-point conversion attempt. Ball was just off Bam Childress's finger tips.

I like him, but even as a neutral observer, I have to say your comments are a bit over the top. I never understood how you can take a guy who is still improving and say "He will never be ..." What did you think of Brady when he was drafted? Wow, this guy will replace Bledsoe and win us three or more superbowls? How many wrote off Rich Gannon as a careeer backup?

Not saying he will be that good, only that he has shown enough as a young developmental QB to be worth keeping as a backup.

I think this rumor is bogus as the Randy Moss rumor, and I'm glad. I like Cassel as out backup.

Is it just me, or is anyone else surprised the words "trade" and "moss" haven't come up in this thread yet?

Stop that! Mother, get that new wasp spray, quick!

What about David Garrard?

I would rather have Bledsoe in their to groom a rookie QB then to just trade for Cassell and hope he does well.

Cassell's numbers in the final game of 2005 against Miami weren't terrible:

11-20 (55%), 168 Yds, 2 TD, 0 Int, 116.2 QB Rating.

Keep in mind, that was playing mostly with backups against a Miami team that had been playing very well down the stretch. I think they are very impressive when you compare them to Brady's struggles against that Miami defense over his career.

I don't think there is anything to this rumor, but if the Pats coaching staff likes Cassell enough to name him the #2 QB, then that bodes well for his future. He obviously isn't proven, but there is little reason to be down on the guy either.

We haven't seen nearly enough of Cassel to draw conclusions on him. He's hasn't seen significant playing time from high school. Obviously someone is not going to have the greatest pocket presence or look completely crisp after not playing in six years. However, in the little we have seen of him in preseason and garbage time I have been impressed.

NEWSFLASH: Patriots64 says that he is unimpressed by Matt Cassel, and that Cassell will never be a starting quarterback in the NFL. Although the sample size of Cassell's NFL performance is very small, Patriots64 has serious doubts about the player's future in the league. When asked about Patriots64 comments, Scott Pioli said, "Who the hell is Patriots64, and what the heck does he know?"

So your argument is that Cassel is "no starting QB" in the NFL, but you feel he is going to be "the Kitna, Harrington, Carr, etc of the league." ALL of those guys have been, I suppose, mediocre, but they've all been "starting QBs." I think perhaps hyperbole just got away with you. No big deal.

Agreed,
I believe their is a potential trade scenario that commented on this. Cousins, Who would you sit, Palmer, Leinhart, Brady? Cassels' bar has to be the greatest of any backup QB in the NFL. He's better than at least 10 starting NFL QBs' right now.
Let us ponder:
Lossman (getting better)
Culpepper (ok he's hurt but Cassel in better than Lemon)
Eli-And if anyone disagrees with this .....yikes!
Grossman
Frye
Kitna
Leftwich
Huard
Tarvaris
Walter
Cambell
I have seen Cassel play. I have seen these dudes play. How wrong am I?

Better yet. Look at it this way. Would any of these QBs besides maybe Lossman who is getting better, be an even trade for Cassel as the Pats #2 QB? Some have "potential" but why bother. Each has played and started and even won but yech! Consider if you will the NYG. I say it is a fair statement that if Cassel started all of Eli's starts for the G Men, his record would not be much worse, even better. At least Cassel can run for his life while Eli is a sitting duck. He is very "Bledsoisk".

I guess you didn't watch the Miami game 2 years ago.

Why on earth would the raiders trade for Cassel when they are going to draft Russell?

It doesn't make sense, unless AL dumbAss want's to draft another "Specimen" of a useless guard ( Robert Gallery ) to clean up that front line......IMO He thinks he will hit another Bo Jackson Homerun in the draft....

I seriously doubt it because "Al Knows Jack" when it comes to draft day, his picks, like his brain, are senile.

PD.
