Everybody seems to be talking about getting the 1st round pick for Samuel and the 2nd round pick for Gay. My hope is that we re-sign both of these guys back. Having Samuel and a healthy Gay would be critical for us this year. This would really prevent us from having any glaring holes to fill for our Superbowl run. If we loose them both then we would have to replace our #1 CB and probably our #1 nickel. Remember Gay was the starting CB in our second superbowl victory (I think) and did a darn good job too. If he remains healthy this year, he would probably the comeback player of the year for our team. If we can do this, then we can really focus on drafting a LB and then start taking the best player available approach.

1.) Gay is NEVER healthy. A second round pick for him would be beyond awesome. This is not like a one yeay type of thing, the guy is always injured.

2.) Having Samuel would be great, but not at the price he is asking. What will you say if they fold and pay him Clements money ( which they never would) then he has a average year. Ill take the two first rounders. He has also proven himself to be somewhat of a greedy bastard. Two first rounders for him would be a god send. A third early first rounder plus a second rounder would be a god send. The pats have always used the draft. A surplus of great picks would be a good thing.

3.) the pats have plenty of picks to do whatever they want this year, right now.

imo..........

Rodney is NEVER healthy too then, if you put it that way. He's still our STARTER. Let's just dump all our players who got hurt more than once. C'mon. If BB didn't value Gay's talent and contribution to the team, he wouldn't have tendered him so high.

I agree with you. Although I don't think they will sign Samuel at the price he wants, but it is his fault for not taking a fair offer. They just might be forced to trade him unless his asking price lowers. For Gay, I hope we match the Jests offer for him and he stays. He was a huge part of our success that year.

Do not think anyone would disagree, however the price for Samuel may be too high.. and a second for Gay may serve us well. Overpaying for Samuel, who has had one good year, might not be the best thing for this team. As far as drafting a LB, a lot of us want this, but with this team you never know what they will do with thier first pick..Mankins two years ago and Maroney last year.. who would've thunk??

I agree that Samual is crucial to the Pats , because he is great in the Pats system.. Randell Gay is a dime a dozen, Tory James is a upgrade, and would be good fill in for a guy that has not seen the field for a solid season.. But do agree I want Samual on the team in 2007

What has Randall Gay done in the last two years to warrant the Pats investing valuable cap dollars for his services? And If they do decide to do what you wish, how many of you will whine and complain about how STUPID they were for investing that money when Gay continues to languish on the IR list.

2005 he played in 5 games, racked up 12 tackles and one pass defensed
2006 he played in 3 games and racked up 2 tackles.

If the Pats do decide to keep him how much and how long should the contract be? Look I like Gay, I too think that he did well for us in 2004. But that was a long time ago, and he hasn't done much since. I'll be happy with a second round pick for an UDFA who can't stay on the field.

Asante is a different story. I hope that the Pats can find a way to work things out with him. We need him, IMO.

Refer to my previous post on Gay. Rodney hasn't done much for us since 2004 either, yet he's our starting SS. Injuries happen all the time in football.

Gay is injury PRONE, Rodney Harrison is just kind of old and had some bad breaks.

Gay looks like he's reed thin...looks like he'll break in half when he goes to tackle someone...and the way he ends up on IR, I guess he kind of does (break in half).

Rodney isn't going be the starter for very long anyway. He is getting older and losing a step. This will probably be his last year with the team. As for Gay, when on the field, he isn't that great. He got smacked around by Terrell Owens in the superbowl, who was playing with screws in his foot. A lot of people on this board overhype this Gay character, the secondary is doing just fine without him. If the Pats can get a first rounder for Samuel, then I would show him door and use his compensation to rebuild the secondary.

Rodney is old.... Gay is injury prone. There is no comparison between the two. A second round pick for gay would be fantastic. One can only hope the jets are dumb enough to do it.

Crucial??? I think that is a bit overblown...I would LIKE to think they can work it out with Samuel...but at HIS price..that may be worse for the team at high inflated prices...so while I hope it's worked out..I understand it may not be and THAT is OK.. We are NOT talking Brady, Seymour or a Brischi...
Gay is another story..he may have talent, but seems not to be able to stay on the field...
HE can be replaced easily..if gtreener pstures are in Jet land..so be it. This team will be fine..one way or another..but crucial?? NO...NOT crucial..

"some bad breaks" could've happened to anyone in that case. Yes Harrison is old, but that's just one of many examples in the NFL where players get hurt and come back to play at the same level. Remember when Colvin had that "career threatening" hip injury? Sure glad we didn't dump him then, huh? I just gave you the Rodney example from our team. Injuries to star young players happen to many on other teams too. I'm sure you know that.

Rodney played in only 3 games in 2005 because that stinkin Steeler player rolled into his leg and nearly ended his career. I still get pissed off every time I see that injury.

He came all the way back from that injury in 2006 to play in 10 games that shoulder injury was strange but we all know what the Titans were playing at when another jerk rolled into his other knee. Even with all that bad luck he was able to contribute on the field. Rodney played in 10 games.

Randall Gay was unable to do that despite being much younger than Rodney.
Rodney fought hard to stay on the field last year. I can't say the same for Randall Gay

True. Gay has been hurt the last 2 years and that happens sometimes. Like I said before, he's healthy now. Just look at how well he played the year we beat Carolina in the SB. Do you rember that year? I'm not saying that we should give him BIG money. i just hope to bring him back this year at the tendered price and see if he returns to form. If he's anything like he was that year, it will be well worth it

As for Samuel, i don't agree with the money he's asking for either. How much gauranteed money did Welker get? 10 - 12 million? How much more gauranteed money do you think Samuel is worth over Welker? You tell me! Besides that, Samuel has been solid and improved every year since he has arrived. He has definitely outplayed the 2 million he's earned since being drafted! I think we owe him a little backpay! Everybody knows that this organization is not the most generous in paying what a player is worth. Brady is underpaid! But that's just how the Pats do business and that's their choice. I just think we will be much better this year if we can re-sign both of these guys. If we don't, it will set us back just like last year when we chose to let Branch and Givens go. Do you think we would have 4 SB rings if we would have had Branch last year? I think the answer is easy!

I'm not comparing Rodney to Gay. Rodney was just one example that came to mind. My point is injuries will happen to YOUNG star athletes as well and they come back to the same level. Other examples from top of my head: Colvin, McNabb, TO, Braylon Edwards, Bob Sanders, Culpepper, Deuce McCalister, Westbrook, Sheppard, etc. If I look it up, I'm sure there's a ton, but you get my point.

There is a number that will make the relationship work. I trust it will be found.

Exactly! It can happen to anyone. Gay is still young and I think he's going to be good in the long run. He has already shown what he can do in the system. Now he just has to stay on the field. You can't do anything about injuries!

Actually, I am concerned about our strong safety position and hope we upgrade that position in the draft. And to be perfectly honest with you, if Rodney was a free agent I don't know if the Pats would resign him unless he took the veteran minimum. He has been too injury prone the last two years for him not to be a concern.

In fact, look for the Pats to push James Sanders in the preseason to take the step to the next level to try to take Rodney's starting job. Don't be suprised if the Pats take a strong safety on the first day of the draft to try to replace Rodney too. I don't think Rodney is guaranteed a starter job this season. It would be tough for him to lose it, but there is a possibilty he will.

As for the Pats tendering Gay, the Pats had no choice to tender Gay a second round tender. Since Gay was an undrafted free agent, the Pats would get no compensation if they tendered Gay to a lower tender and someone signed him away from the Pats. The lower tender offer compensation is based on the round the player is drafted in and Gay wasn't drafted. Without having to give the Pats a draft pick in compensation, Gay would have drawn plenty of interest by many teams. The extra $500k that it cost to give Gay a higher tender was worth the risk of not losing Gay for nothing, but not neccessarily mean the Pats are all that high on the guy.
