IF we get a 2nd for Gay- This helps

There are a lot of good players in middle range 20-50ish. If we pick up a 2nd for Gay we should be able to get a very good player.
This will also help us in the 1st as we wouldn't have to Reach for a player knowing we have that 2nd round pick.
It could also be used if BB wanted to move up a few spots in the 1st to grab that player he wanted.

Here is the info regarding Gay if a team signs him.

If a team signs Gay to an offer sheet, the Patriots would be compensated with a second-round draft choice if they don't match. If New England matched the offer sheet, it would retain Gay and assume that contract.

I would be absolutely shocked if the Jets signed Gay to an offer sheet, but would not be so shocked if the two sides worked out a deal involving something a little bit less than a 2nd rounder.

Personally, I'd be thrilled to get a 3 for him, I think a 4th this year and a conditional pick next would be a solid haul for a guy we've hardly seen in 2 years.

Based on what he's done for us, sure. But I'd prefer to keep him than toss him aside for a throwaway pick (which most #4s end up being). Looking at the success rate of 2s, 3s, 4s and seeing that Gay can play at a reasonable level when he's healthy, I wouldn't do it for less than a #2. I would consider a 2008 #2, though, if we couldn't get this year's #2.

Or we know that he is worth something and offer him a 2nd because if someone is crazy enough to give a 2nd its worth the loss.

A 2nd or 3rd, whatever we can get, the Jets seconds are late round picks. Gay has been a name on the roster and not on the field almost the whole time he has been here. Draft a DB and lock him up on the roster for 4 years.

Exactly my thought. Let the Jest sign him to an offer sheet- no negotiation. If we get a 2nd that gives us even more ammo to go up and get Willis with our 2 first rounders and also get a third.

Then we can package and move up in the second to get a DB that we want. After that it's all gravy.

I agree. The Jets would be ******ed to pay a 2nd for a guy who's been MIA for 2 years. Welker has been productive and thus warrants a late 2nd. I could see a 3rd for Gay as being middle ground, but a 4th is garbage for a guy that, if healthy, is a young vet that can play. For a team like the Pats, a contender in need of depth players, the 4th is useless in comparrison to a healthy Gay.

I think that in Gay Mangini sees a young CB that knows his defense, projects well in his defense and except for the injury hiccups, is worth a second for a known commodity.

I can't see one potential player available at #59 that would bring as much immediate value to his team as Gay would.

Combine all this with the fact that Miller has been disappointing in the base defense, to say the least and I think signing Gay makes a lot of sense for the Jets.

If the doctors give Gay a clean bill of health and Gay works out well for Mangini and Tradway, then I would expect them to sign him to an offer sheet and then force BB to ask the exact question in reverse. Is a second rounder worth more than Gay?

I'm not sure this makes sense.

Injuries are part of football. The few players who don't get injured are remarkable.

Welker was worth a second because of his talent, not because he was healthy. A ton of players were healthy - that doesn't make them worth a second round pick if they don't have second round talent. I understand Monty Beisel was healthy all last year.

Likewise, saying Kellen Winslow isn't worth a second round pick because he didn't play for two years is asinine.

The pick level is for what you think the guy can do for you.

If you think he is healthy, and the injuries he suffered are not career threatening, then whether he was hurt or not last year is less important than his talent.

You are paying him for NEXT year, not LAST year.

At this point, I think a second round pick for Gay is not a bad deal, but if we lose Samuel, then I'd rather have Gay than the pick.

Giving up Gay for a 2nd rounder would essentially be trading Gay for Welker AND moving up a few spots in the draft. How anyone can think this wouldn't be a steal of a move is beyond me.

If someone is worried about CB depth, we could probably get someone equal to or better than Gay with that pick, who's younger and doesn't have the injury history. That wouldn't be my preference, but with the Samuel situation as it is I can see the argument. I can also see using the 2nd to trade up in the first round.
