Many of us thought this was a possibility when the Pats gave up a second for Welker.

Re: Randal Gay to visit Jets

If we wait a couple of days, we'll see what a poison pill looks like.

Re: Randal Gay to visit Jets

With the Samuel problem..I am sure Mangina will have a bitter one..We shall see how the border war heats up...

Re: Randal Gay to visit Jets

Gay leaving could be good personal financial news for Asante.

Re: Randal Gay to visit Jets

This has to be a smokescreen on the part of the Jets. No way do they give up a 2nd round pick for an undrafted free agent who's played 8 games the last two years. And if they are willing to do that, I don't even think they'll need the poison pill. The Pats will wait approximately 30 seconds before declining to match the Jets offer.

I'm sure the Pats will accept ANY contract from the Jets with open arms.

I'd take a 2nd for Gay any day.

"The Jets have two second-round draft choices, their own (59th overall) and the Bears' (63d), both of which are late in the round."

While true, this sentence is misleading in that it implies that the Jets could use either pick for compensation for Gay. A team can only use their original pick (or an earlier pick) for RFA and franchise compensation.

I am probably among a small minority here--I would hate to see Blue go, even for a second. I want to see him extended! Though a 2nd would make draft day more fun. If we end up trading up for Josh Wilson, adios Blue!

I'm also a Blue fan. But a 2nd for a player that's had a very had getting on the field seems fair. I've spent most of the night wondering what we'd do if the make an offer and a trade does come to pass for Asante.

I like Gay as well. He is a solid CB who can cover. However, he is on the thin side and has had injury issues going back to LSU. I find it hard to believe the Jets would be willing to sign him to a deal given those injury concerns.

That said, if they do the Pats should just take the 2nd. While the Samuel thing makes losing Gay worse (no doubt that is part of the Jets thinking), they have the option of moving Wilson back to CB. They need to draft for the secondary anyway, so this will speed the rebuilding.

Looks like mangini is up to his tricks again.

Looks like Mangini is really sticking it to old Bill.

Stole a coach, made sweet promises to Samuel of the mountian of cash they would pay him if he could only get free (IE - See their Offer to Branch's agent that occured months before he got traded), and now that it looks like Samuel will be traded, go after his back-up Gay.

Not a bad offseason for the Jets so far, once again they are causing a major disruption of the Patriots' plans.

Now we get to look forward to ESPN calling BB a "jerk" again when he's so POed at Mangini he refuses to shake his hand again first game of the season.

So much for the thawing of relations between BB and Mangina if that's the case.

Let's be clear. The patriots are happy to get a 2nd for Gay. If they wanted to be sure he played for us, they would have have given him a higher tender. A 2nd is fine.

I agree. I would not trade Randall Gay for the Jets second round pick, given the choice. But if he leaves, it's decent compensation.

A second for a guy we've barely seen - see ya later Blue - send a post card.

Where's everyone who thought the Pats gave away too much for a guy who's a terrific ST's player and caught 60 passes last year and had to be double-teamed to take him out of the game.

If Welker's not worth a second (though I think he is) ....

Edited to say ...

So why are the Jets doing this? Their path to the playoffs is through the Patriots. They have an accurate QB and terrific receivers and decent pass blocking and a 1000-yard RB. Is it worth a 2nd to (1) get a good nickel back for what will likely be a manageable long-term contract and (2) take away a good nickel back from their team that is their annual playoff roadblock.

That's why Welker was such a good deal, though Welker from the Jets would have been a better deal. Gay from the Pats looks good to Mangini, but STILL not worth a 2nd.

OTOH, if your arch competitor has one achilles heal, it's labor relations. Any chance to drop a little poison in that well, and Mangini will take it. That's what I think this is about. Dangle a contract in front of Gay to stir up trouble.

Which 2nd rounder would it be? Chicago's or NYJ's? Would it be the higher of the two? Do the NYJ get to pick?

There is the unwritten rule that you persue another teams RFA at your own risk - which is why we persued a trade with Miami instead of tendering Welker (even though in Miami's case it was pretty clear they were dangling Welker as trade bait to add a draft pick to replace what Culpepper cost them). There are a couple of young GM's new to the position in the league who don't seem inclined to play by unwritten rules. But it's also entirely possibly we were dangling Gay as well. As motivated as he was to get another shot to prove he can stay on the field, we likely could have signed him to an extension with an option bonus that would have insured he was available here in 2007 without necessarily committing to much more than his tender for this season. But we made him available to others for a price instead. I'm sure BB feels comfortable with the concept of replacing what UDFA Gay has done in the last 3 years with a 2nd rounder.

If the Jets give a 2nd for Gay, they are idiots. You build your team with second rond draft choices. This is where the value is.

I'd do a cartwheel if the Jets were this stupid. I hope it happens because a 2nd is great ammunition for the Patriots to do whatever the hell they want on draft day.

I'd be ecstatic to get a 2nd, it gives us the opportunity to grab Josh Wilson who will be a much better nickel than Gay.
