Why Asante will be traded.....

The Patriots are going to trade Asante. There whole system is built about not giving up big plays and then when and if a Team gets into the Red Zone they shut them down. The DE, LB and SS take over, CB are no longer that important. Look at previous drafts and you can see how they Pats value DB.

No offence to Samuel, he is skilled, but he is a product of the System. In the PATs mind he can be replaced by an average player who can do the same job. They can do the same job because the DE and LB are so Dominate. This season with Thomas (and a 1st round LB) in there the PATs will be putting big time pressure on all QBs making it easier for the CB. So as I said they figure they can get by with ordinary CBs, which they will.

Games are won on the Lines of scrimmage, one sacK on Mannig in the AFC Champs and the Pats would win. If they are going to pay the kind of money he wants it will only be to an LB or DE. With the 1st Round pick they will get for him they can either get one good player or two in lower rounds (which they would more than likely do).

Also if the Pats are going to trade him it will be before the Draft (they learned there lesson last season with branch), so expect to see it soon.

Asante had a career year last season. What team out there will be stupid enough to pay him MORE than what the tag number is this season? Sure, someone may guarantee him more than the 7-8 mil, but I cannot see any team guaranteeing 20+ mil.

IMO, he should come back this season with a chip on his shoulder and play well enough to get a nice contract in '08.

As far as I am concerned swapping picks and giving them Asante is NOT a good deal. I do not care if it is a 6 from a 24 or 28.

Anybody that wants Asante should give us a number one - at the very least period (we keep ours).

You are getting emotinally attached to Asante, thats not how the Pats will be. They are looking at the System and they don't view CB as an Intricate piece. Asante does not fit the System anymore, and just like in any other business will be removed.

There is a simple reason why these kind of draft rumors don't make any sense--the Pats PREFER to draft at the end of the 1st round because of the lower financial risk.

Just looked this up: the #6 pick from last year's draft, Vernon Davis, signed a 5 yr contract for between $23-25M (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2532619). This is before he even played a single down in the NFL!

I'm not sure I want the Pats to sign Asante for the $7-8M or so per year it will take, but I certainly rather they do that than pay Landry $5-6M per year.

(BTW, Maroney's contract is 5yrs/$9M by comparison.)

Let's say that they do make the deal with the skins. I find it unlikely that they stay at the 6 spot but trade back for 2 reasons 1. financial (as you state) but also 2. to stockpile more picks this year and/or next. Let's say a trade back with Atlanta (who probably covets Landry) and they pick up a 2nd this year. Then they could also trade out of the 8 spot to 11 with San Fran and get Willis before the Bills grab him (speculating) while picking up more picks this and next year.

Howabout "why they won't trade Asante"?

Given the Branch situation last year, the Pats are willingly letting it be accepted that these tactics will not result in them signing a long term deal.

That's a good precedent and one I'm glad they are setting.

What they need to be wary of is setting the precedent that these tactics by players will result in them being traded and getting a long term deal from another team.

If they set that precedent then player after player after player is going to do the same thing - thanks mainly to the Patriots front office setting such a precedent.

The front office was willing to risk forgoing a SB last year rather than undermine them logn term (Branch, in hindsight, could very well have made the difference)

Would they do the same thing this year to avoid setting a similar precedent that could undermine them in the future as well? Yes - I do - but in this case they would be taking far less of a gamble that Samuel would sit out the season - or nearly the whole season.

The chance that Branch would sit out was near 100% - the risk reward of playing his final year for $1 million, compared to the bounty of a new long term contract with a signing bonus made it a virtual certainty.

Samuel, under the franchise tag, will earn in two games what Branch was due for the entire season. Samuel, under the franchise tag, will earn in one game what he earned in each of his previous entire seasons. Samuel, even with a new contract, will likely be looking at $8 million a season on average once the "fake" years are factored in.

That's nearly exactly what he's due to make this year, albeit without additional years guaranteed. I'd wager he and his "Get Paid" tatoo would take $8 million rather than $0 million for this when all is said and done.

It's a wortwhile gamble for the Patriots to take for the long term precedent, as well as for the short term benefit of having Samuel on the team this year.

Could they get something good for him in trade? Sure! But they better make sure they factor in all the future player holdout situations when then consider "fair value".
