Im sorry if this was brought up in the other Samuel thread. But its 23 pages long and thats alot to go through. Anyway, he said in his quote that "other teams think I am worth more" or something in that nature. Does he mean that litterally? Is that an indication that he has had contact with other teams discussing his value? Or is he just guessing? I assume that if a franachise tag is placed on a player then he is unable to talk to other teams about a contract without the Pats permission.

He isn't an exclusive franchise player, he is non-exclusive. That means he is still free to negotiate with other teams, but if he signs an offer the Pats have the right to match or will be compensated with 2 first round draft picks.

He can talk to any team he wants, he is a free agent. He is just limited by the franchise tag.

And even if he weren't, is anyone naiive enough to think his agent wouldn't be having some conversations with other teams in hopes of forcing a trade and no contract?

The Patriots "gave permission" for Branch to do that last year while he was under contract.... of course Branch's agent would NEVER have discussed trade and contract terms with other if they hadn't.... riiiiiighhht.

Tampering isn't so much illegal these days - just getting caught tampering is illegal.

How much do you want to bet Mangina and the Jets are trying to f*ck us over?

Probably a little of both...

This is a good question and I have to admit I am not sure of the answer... However, I always thought the way it worked was Samuel is free to speak to and negotiate with whomever he wants because the Patriots do not have exclusive rights to him (he is not under contract). Any team can make Samuel an offer and take him away from New England - they just better be ready to give up 2 #1's.

Just out of curiousity, since the "franchise player" designation was created, has any team ever gone ahead and given up the 2 #1's to take someone else's franchise player..? I can't think offhand of when it (if ever) has happened...

I brought this up on the other thread somewhere...so if he can talk to other clubs...and CAN sign with other clubs...then...sign with another club..please!!!
Two first rounders?? The Pats would LOVE that....OR let him sit out...if he does..he loses big time.. and press?? Sounds like he's trying to take advantage of that tag...Grant..Nriggs,,,Freeny..THEY have been solid players for years..so giving him a long term contract is understandable Samuel?? NOT in the same class..one solid year..not 3-4 as the others are. Sell high!! And let other teams pay high and take the risk...
And yes,,,I do think Mangina is involved of course..the weasel..trade gim or let him rot sitting out and see what price he will get with a year away from football. Here's another thing to think about..do you think the 7 million is close to what he would have gotten if he was not tagged?? If not..them..maybe the Pats new that by franchising him, that he would either 1---be happy with it and settle for something reasonable OR do what he is doing and totally inflate what he thiinks he is worth...and thus the Pats would get GREAT compensation. Either way, they do not make out all that bad.

Sean Gilbert in 1998. The Redskins franchised him and Carolina signed him to a new contract, giving up the 2 first round picks. He was a bust for them.

Heh heh... I salute your football knowledge because I would have never come up with that one in a million years :D

And Joey Galloway. Dallas signed him , giving up two first rounders which were used for shaun ALexander and Koren Robinson....

Meeshawn Johnson? I could be wrong.

Didn't the Redskins sign Laverneus (sp?) Coles and then give the Jets two first rounders since he was franchised?

Asante said that "teams are scared" of the compensation they would have to give up to sign him. There is no doubt in my mind that the Jets are throwing a monkey wrench in the works. If you notice everytime an AFCE opponent shows interest in a player or has a player thats disgruntled (Turner, Branch, Samuel) the Jets always seem to show interest. I think it's all about driving up the asking price and creating chaos in those deals.

Probably right, but you know what, if Asante wants to go, let him go.

He had one amazing season, and he's going to get $7 million friggin dollars for it!

And he's "not happy"?

Dude, you need to rethink your position.

Playing CB in New England for $7m is a lot better than play CB in Detroit or Buffalo for $8m! Just ask Damien Woody, Chad Eaton, Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, et al.

It's all about the money...OR is it?? your choice...

Other teams are trying to "poison the water" between Asante and the Patriots.

They tell Asante that they will offer him this kind of contract, "if only they didn't have to give up 2 first rounders". So now Asante is pissed at the Patriots for standing in his way.

It is tampering? No. Is it a deliberate attempt to make things very difficult between the player and his team? You bet it is.

This seems to be happening every year with one team or another. That is why the system needs to be fixed.

Asante Samuel = Deion Branch = Ty Law. Apparently every other year or so, we're going to have one of these "show me the money" idiots disrupting the team. Perhaps I'm jumping the gun, but I don't expect to see Samuel in a Patriots uniform this year. Goodbye, good riddance, have fun losing football games wherever you end up.

The franchise designation is not a contract, its a designation if another team signs Asante, they must pay the compensation. But it doesn't mean Asante can't speak with other teams. Of course he can.

If he at some points signs the Patriots franchise tender, then he can no longer speak to other teams. Until then, he can.

Well, I seriously doubt that anyone would need to directly tell Asante what they would be willing to pay him since all he has to do is look at the Clements and Bly deals to get a notion of the position worth at this point.

If another team was willing to pay Samuel the big money, they would likely have an idea of what they would be willing to trade. If they say something like a 6th round pick, no-one is going to think they are serious about the deal.

If it is a couple of second rounders, then the discussion gets interesting.

No real different then the Briggs situation. The tag does not mean that the two first rounders are the hang-up, it is what the team is really willing to take.

It is part of the buisness of football. This is not something unusal for players not franchised, players under contract will do the same thing.
