Just heard it on NFL network. Not happy with the way negotiations are going.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Geez I hope this is NFL Network just blowing smoke. I couldn't stand yet another off season like last year with a hold out of a good player.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Who reported this, Shefter ?

I don't really care. All I ever wanted was his value whether it's him or the equivalent picks/players. I didn't want a stupid comp pick.

Samuel long term is fine. Or legit trade value is fine.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

We shall see. If it's a true story, I can live with it... better now than a week before the draft.

It's been confirmed by Reiss. The report by Shefter, I mean.

Samuel update

Cornerback Asante Samuel spoke with Adam Schefter of the NFL Network and updated the status of his contract talks with the Patriots.

“This is to let everybody know that I’m not happy anymore and things are not going well,” Samuel told Schefter. “At first I thought it was going well, but it’s not.

“We have a difference of opinion in my value. They think I’m worth one price and the other teams think I’m worth a lot more. If a long-term deal can’t be done at fair numbers for me and New England, then I want to be traded.”

Uh-oh...

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Be strong. Asante had a great year and his agent is going to drive a hard bargain, as he should.

I think Asante wants to get it done and so does the team and that is the most important thing.

I have always been a big Asante fan, even when he was being torched here, but the team comes first. If he wants the moon and has great trade value, we have to draft and sign some CBs. Something tells me we don't have to make that decision, however.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Oh boy! There may be a possiblity that the Pats end up with three first round picks.

i'd rather have a happy asante under a long term deal than another mid-late 1st rounder.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Whether they get it done or not, I like his phrasing:

He thinks he's worth one thing, and other teams think he's worth more [than New England.]

This gets right down to the heart of it. If in fact that's an unbridgeable gap, I am happy to see him go. There aren't many things to trust in the FA/salary cap era, but the Pats' valuation decisions are one thing we can have some faith in.

That said, yeah, seeming chasms are part and parcel of negotiations. But if not, hey, to quote Eminem "It ain't worth it/I can't think of a perfecter way to word it."

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Of course there are "other" teams willing to overpay for someone........what a novel concept Assante. I hope this is just posturing to get a contract done...otherwise he needs to be traded or we may have another Lance Briggs situation going on.

He had one good season (His contract year) and now the $7 million franchise is not good for him?

Asante see ya. Trade him for a 2nd rounder

Go from there.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

this sucks, seems like we go throught something like this every year, maybe instead of goin and signing all of these free agents we should of taken care of our own 1st, I dont blame him he deserves a new deal whether its here or elsewhere, this really puts a damper on the great off-season we've been having, hopefully things still work out in the end.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Seriously, I'd take a 2nd rounder for him, and feel richer for it. Asante is on the cusp of stardom, but if Ty Law is expendable, then for sure Asante is. I've got no qualms starting Hobbs and Gay, or shifting Wilson to CB.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Anyone else think he will have a down year regardless of whether he stays or goes? It was a contract year, and he had never before played at the level he played last season. I for one don't believe he can maintain it...sell high buy low

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

I tend to agree..IGF he wants that high price...let the bidding war begin..and get what he think he is worth..THAT simple...If he is NOT happy..see ya...
I agree a down year fpr him..ONE big year does NOT make a pugged up salary..

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

Before you wish too hard for Asante to leave town, ask yourself

who will replace him? It's much too late to replace him in free agency. The

only good cornerbacks were Asante and Clements. It's also unreasonable

to think a rookie can step in and perform like him. On our roster we have

oft injured Randall Gay and Scott, Spahn and Williams.

My take is that this is just posturing on the part of his agent. The magic

date is July 15th. By this date Asante is locked into a one year contract.

I don't think he wants to play with a one year contract because his

interceptions are bound to go down. Even Ty Law rarely had back to back

seasons with a lot of interceptions. Don't panic until July 14th.

The problem with winning a lot of games every year is that your players look good to other teams. You can pay some guys, but some teams are just willing to pay a lot of money to get what they think is "the final piece."

maybe instead of going and signing all of these free agents we should of taken care of our own 1st
Nah, I'd rather have Thomas, Stallworth, Washington, Welker, Morris and Brady than Asante. Good as he is, he won't make the difference that all those guys will make.

Re: Assante's asking to be traded?

our FO better do soemthing. they overpay a slot WR who is a "decent at best" returnman and give up a 2nd rounder in procoess but we cant get $6.3 million per season to Samuel(something like that like Bly).

im very dissapointed and SAmuel has every right to be. They franchise him and seem to be lowerign his value? im very angry
