Belichcik has been all over the lot in handling the QB situation for the Patriots. Sometimes he carries only two; sometimes he carries three and a PS candidate as well; sometimes he carries three; once he carried four on the roster.

What do you expect this year?

Will he draft one? Who, When and Where?

Will he sign an UDFA for camp fodder? Who ?

WiIl he sign a older ex-vet starter like Flutie or Testaverde? Who?

just a guess, BB drafts one in 3rd or 4th.
Is Cassell good enough to move on next year, and try to start somewhere else? (I can't remember his contract commitment)??

If there's one offensive position I feel certain the Pats will draft this year it's quarterback. This year or next will be Cassel's last, and the #3 slot is wide open. That's an ideal setup to groom the next backup. (But I can tell not everyone shares my opinion, since so many Patriots mocks are posted without QBs!)

I'm looking for a Brady-style QB, on the theory that the whole offense is designed around his strengths. And since we're probably talking day 2 with time to learn, I'm leaning toward the rawer prospects with high upside. I keep coming back to Jeff Rowe from Nevada. Other possibilities:

Toby Korrodi, Central Missouri State
Matt Gutierrez, Idaho State

I'm genuinely curious when I ask this--do you consider Cassel a Brady-style QB?

In any case, IMO, I think the Pats are currently looking for the next Cassel: someone who could lead the Pats if he had to, but probably won't. The next time they go looking for a QB, though, I suspect they'll be looking for Brady's replacement.

We're already talking about Tom Brady's replacement??? Damned this off season is loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong!!!!!!

Fair question; I'd say yes and no. He's certainly more athletic, which is all to the good as long as he doesn't get too run-happy. But they are exactly the same size -- 6'4", 225 -- and on the practice field he moves and throws a whole lot more like #12 than Rohan Davey ever did. When it comes to managing a game, etc., well, nobody knows!

Of course, Doug Flutie and Vinnie T. are hardly Brady clones....

Totally agree. That's exactly why I'm focusing on a Brady mini-me -- for the smoothest possible transition if he has to step in for a series, or for a game. A potential "replacement" might be something else entirely.

It's not looking for his replacement, it's looking for his next backup and naturally hoping you snag one who shows potential in a year or two to create the kind of buzz that allows you to flip him, as most of us presume BB will look to do with Cassel in 2008. In fact securing that player this year makes it a lot more likely they can and will. If not, BB might just forego the draft picks for one more year of stability with a player he obviously has some level of confidence in with Matt. Because he will see value in that as well as in trade.

I agree that it's likely we aren't really looking for THE replacement for another 3+ seasons because barring the unspeakable Tommy will be extended (likely in 2008 or before the 2009 season) at least 2-3 years beyond his current contract's expiration in 2010.

I think there will likely be a QB drafted as early as the 4th and likely another in the 6th-7th or signed as an UDFA. We need 4 for camp anyway, especially with a plethora of WR's to work out. I doubt a veteran will be brought in this year unless it's done late because there aren't other glaring needs or better options for depth at other positions (ala Vinny).

They've had private workouts with Kolb and Stanbeck who are projected as day two picks. Kolb is apparently the more polished of the two with Stanbeck projecting as a project at QB with some potential at WR conversion in the NFL. I'd just as soon they stick with the guy with the most upside at the QB position.

I've waite to see hwo posters thugh for a draf tpick and who they thought of as hte "old pro vet" aka Flutie and Testaverde.

Mu nominations are Brade Johnson as "old pro vet"
Rowe/Best as late draftees
Korrodi as UDFA/camp arm.

I hope you know the warning signs of a stroke. English???

BTW "old pro vet" signed in March to backup Romo in Dallas.

Heres what I want for opening day or sometime near the season.

Brady
Cassel
Bledsoe:)

I don't see the Pats drafting a Qb this draft unless its in the very late rounds.

We have Tom Brady and Matt Cassel. I'm not going to stress myself out over worrying who our third string QB is going to be.

Most definitely the Pats will seriously consider drafting a developmental QB in the late rounds. Success would allow the trade of Mat C next year for a Day 1 pick. It all depends if some QB on their value board is still available and assumes that other more critical positions (e.g. developmental LB, developmental RB) don't have a substantially more value player still on the board.

I agree completely that they will seriously look at drafting a developmental QB. As for trading Cassel, I don't agree. I believe they like what they have in a back-up so far. If Cassel is able to show another big leap in development this year that may change, but as of now I only see a strong back-up role for him.

I would. What are the styles of QB?

runners (run first, pass second) (Vick)
scramblers (pass first, run second) (McNabb)
cannon-arm pocket passer (drop back and heave) (Palmer)
monsters (BIG guys, FB body, QB arm) (McNair)
field generals (more brains than brawn, not mobile, not runner, not cannon arm, just read the D and complete the pass.) (Brady/Manning)

I'd put Cassel in the last category. Not at the level of Brady/manning, of course, but in that style.

Have I missed a style? Maybe a category for hte Rex Grossmans of the NFL:
over their head and drowning (not mobile, not runner, not cannon arm, not a defense reader, makes mental mistakes)

Matt Cassel can run and scramble, certainly better than Brady. In that sesne I'd compare him to Matt Hasslebeck.

I disagree that the Pats NEED to draft a backup QB in this year's draft.
Doesn't rule out that they might but they don't need to. Signing a vet backup QB will make our run in 2007 fairly secure.

I also think there's a lot more value to keeping Matt Cassell than "flipping" him for a pick. It's much more valuable to a team that is interested in winning to have a capable backup that knows your system than "flip" it for an unknown pick, unless you can rob somebody for a 1st rounder, which is doubtful.

IMO Cassell's value to the Pats is ON the roster, and is worth much more than adding another 2nd rounder.

My bold, yet controversial plan is in the draft forum.:D
