at first glance this group looks pretty deep...but what happens if Maroney goes down...

I wouldnt want to go into alot of games with Faulk as probably our best rusher out of the group (dont know much about sammy morris to be honest)...would love to pickup another guy in the draft. I like booker, Hunt, Lynch, Bush (if he falls to 4th round). With all the late round picks we should package a couple together or maybe take a shot at a guy in the 4th round or so. i would LOVE to see us pickup Lynch if he falls, Maroney did to 21 so i could see lynch falling to 24 ESPECIALLY if turner and dillon sign with new teams.

If we added another guy via the draft, our RB/FB position would look like this..

Maroney
Faulk
Morris
Evans
Draft

(Mills--TE/FB)

Am I wrong in saying that 5 guys (plus Mills as a hybrid te/fb) at the tailback position is a bit overkill (this is more of a question than a statement).

It depends on if you consider Evans more of a fullback or a running back.

Not for me. Evans is a fullback. Mills has never run the ball. Faulk is a third down back and receiver. I don't know what people think will happen if Maroney is out for a couple of games.

We'd be screwed. Nobody on the list is a feature back. I am not OK with anybody on that list stepping into the role of our #1 back if maroney were to get knicked up for a stretch. This must be addressed in the draft, and the earlier the better in my eyes. Faulk is no spring chicken, and nobody on that list has carried the ball in the NFL. I'd like to see us pick up a running back in the 3rd round, or even trade into the second and grab Kenny Irons, Tony Hunt or Kolby Smith. . . . .

I agree with this, even if we don't consider Mills. Teams usually only carry 4 players on the roster (3 RBs and 1 FB). There just aren't enough roster spots to carry 5 especially with the fact that we might go with 6 WRs instead of the normal 5 this year. I don't see BB giving up a Defensive roster spot either. IMO, the Pats acted too fast in signing Morris. Now, it wouldn't make any sense to cut him and lose all the bonus money anyway. Similar idea goes for Faulk, (plus I love this guy as a 3rd down back). Evans is staying for sure as FB too. All I can predict now is if we draft a RB fairly high, someone isn't going to make the team and the only RB I wouldn't care to replace him with is Morris, but that would make them look bad and we'll carry a dead cap hit. Not sure on this, guess we'll see on the 28th and 29th.

eh faulk and maroney are the only ones you can really consider a threat...

depending on how the blocking is, (heard pats are changing to zone)

then morris too

Yup! We're screwed if Maroney goes down. I have no idea why we knowingly would take the risk at any position except for QB, and even there, I would prefere to have a quality veteran QB. And the fun is that so many disagree!

And for the record
1) I think Mills will need to make the team as a TE or a STer.
2) There are lots of running backs I'd rather have than using Mills as a running back, a position he has never played. My prediction is that Mills will be on our Practice Squad all year, or on IR.
3) I think that running teams can afford to use five roster spots for running backs and fullbacks. Also, running teams often use three running backs on a regular basis (rotating two) and a third as a change of pace and third down bakc and receiver. Serious running teams have fullbacks. And, even non-serious running have short yardage backs. You can do all the above with four healthy backs, although I don't know who I would trust to run on 4th and two straight up the gut. We will change blocking schemes to take advantage of Maroney's style, NOT to go straight up the gut.
4) And running teams or balanced teams have a choice on 3rd and two or three. For passing teams, this is a passing down.
5) And all teams should be able cope with adversity and deal with ONE injury to a unit of four players.

As indicated above, I am not convinced that we have short yardage back, or a back to regularly balance off Maroney. And we certainly would be screwed if Maroney or even Evans went down. There are several draftees that I think would be much more valuable than a 6th WR, a 10th OL, a 3rd QB, or a 4th TE.

We haven't replaced Dillon. We've upgraded Pass, our utility running back, who could catch a ball out of the backfield and play fullback, and who could play special teams. Morris was a solid pickup and upgrade. However, we NEEDED four running backs last year (including a utility running back). We played the second half of our final half with ZERO running backs.

So, my top three needs definitely includes RB (along with FS and LB). I would like the LB situation to be dealt with in free agency so that a Day One CB can be added as well.

We'd be screwed. Nobody on the list is a feature back. I am not OK with anybody on that list stepping into the role of our #1 back if maroney were to get knicked up for a stretch. Uh...fellas..uh......

what i really meant wasnt how many guys we have on our roster...that doesnt matter, its not like we wont have a guy who is a RB....but Faulk isnt an everydown back and i dont think morris is either....Mills is NOT a pure RB, same with Heath Evans....reading the Herald article on Maroney got me thinking.
Last year we had Maroney to fill in for dillon, i think maroney really needs someone to take the load off his back. Didnt he say himself last year that full NFL season is really tough on the body???

If Maroney goes down and we are screwed... We need a nother back.

I agree that if Maroney was to get hurt (hopefully not though) the guys we have now wouldn't exactly be the best choice for backup. What I'm trying to say is will the Pats carry 5 RBs on the 53 man roster or will they have to make a "stupid" cut (Morris or Faulk) that would result in dead cap moneyif they get another RB? I was trying to remember the last time Patriots carried 5 RBs on the 53 man roster, anybody know?

exactly, the argument is that it would be ridiculous to carry more backs. what we have here is a solid (potentially great) starting RB and an array of mediocre backups...I still think we undervalue morris. If we were to draft another RB, we would likely need to cut one of the backs we have now, which, as someone else said, would result in dead cap money.

But now that i think of it, most teams have a starting calibur back and a bunch of mediocre back-ups. Also, Morris isn't so mediocre either. I think we have other spots to look into come draft day more important than RB.

The Patriots "potentially great" starting RB has already PROVEN to be an injury liability. I am not saying I don't like Maroney as our RB, because I do; however, he has shown an inability to stay on the football field, and this was a season in which he shared carries. I would not want to see Maroney go down in week 3 with an injury to that shoulder and have Morris as the FT RB. I'm not comfortable with that situation if it were to arise.
I think that the Patriots may look at Darius Walker from ND as a potential mid round choice. He could provide good insurance if Maroney were to go down, and provides long term value as the heir to Kevin Faulk.

I think it would be fair to make a mid-round choice at RB. However, I believe we have other more immediate needs for the early round picks outside of the RB position.

I also don't believe Maroney's track record is long enough to say that he is injury-prone.

All you can use is the sample size that Maroney has given -one season. That one season was injury prone. So, thus far Laurence Maroney is injury prone. You can't make a counter argument.

You're still not answering my question. I'm not necessarily opposed to drafting another RB, I just want to know what people think will happen with our roster. Will the Pats keep 5 or cut Morris and take the cap hit. Also, it was a serious question about last time Patriots carried 5 RBs on the roster. I am curious because I don't remember.

Last year. . . . .Dillon, Evans, Faulk, Maroney, Pass. In 2005, the Patriots carried 6 RB's on the roster.

plus if someone got injured wouldnt that mean they wouldnt be active so its not 5....plus who says Mills makes the team...After maroney i dont think anyone on this team can fill his role.
Faulk - i like as an off-pace guy, they give it to him just when no ones expecting, throw screens, return punts ect....
Evans - more of a FB with us, sometimes we throw a curve and hand it off and he has had some really good runs.
Morris- i dont know much about this guy, but i know hes no corey dillon.

Our running game struggled last year at times with both dillon and Maroney in there, i dont think they are going to do as good if maroney is injured even if for a game.

Luckily, our passing game has potentially improved ALOT

This doesnt mean i think we should pick up a RB early. But #91 or after we could get a quality guy. Didn't Atlanta get Norwood in the 3rd last year. Somebody like that.

And whoever said that most teams dont have a good RB after their star, thats true but it seems teams who are doing that have a reliable, proven starter.

teams i consider good running teams (dont know the exact stats but i know they are effective) like Dallas, San Diego, Indy, New orleans ect.... have more then one guy that can be a big time threat. the cowboys have Maroneys partner from Minnisota teamed up with Julius Jones.

Yes, but Pass was on the PUP and only played in 3 games last year, probably because they didn't know how to include him in the alredy crowded backfield. There is no way Pats had 6 RBs on the active roster in 2005. I think you're misunderstanding me. There is a weekly roster of 53 players. Only 45 can be active for the games. Practice squad players (like Hill or Charles in 2005) don't count.
