From Tom Curran:

It looks as if Brown and Brady will be back together next year.Troy Brown is in the Patriots' 2007 plans despite recent surgery to repair a ruptured patella tendon.

"I expect Troy to have a role with us this year as far as I'm concerned," Patriots head coach Bill Belichick told NBCSports.com on Wednesday. "He is part of the plan for next season."

Good news.

VERY good news...I never really thought he would NOT be brought back...

yes.... Yes.... YES... Troy Brown is my favorite (current) Pats player... I'd love to see him finish his career in NE... and then, if he has the desire and BB wants him to... move on to coach in the organization!!! This is truly outstanding news!

Needless to say training camp will be very interesting.

If Chad Jackson ends up being PUPed or IRed that makes it easy as we could keep 6 WR as Troy can play defense and Washington is a good ST player.

If Jackson is healthy, it will be a spiritied competition for 5 or maybe 6 spots with one WR not making it. Or there's the outside, teensy weensy, chance they could keep 7 and just keep the competition up all season. Keeping 7 seems unlikely, though doable.

I have a feeling we will be drafting a WR.. Competition will be key..

Am I the only one on edge about the vague way BB couched that stuff? "plans" and a "role?" Couldn't this just as easily be in a non-playing capacity? I hope not, but I think it's possible.

LOL

I just said in another Troy Brown thread that they are all just doing the off season it's a business Troy Brown dance circa 2007. Troy says he wants to play, hopes to play here, wants more than a crumb for his services. Bill counters with a we love Troy on this team type statement.

Bingo. :D

No - BB only plans for the team, not the franchise PR department. And Troy is not going to assistant coach for 80 hours a week $150K per.

If Troy were interested in getting into coaching, he'd likely start out at home at Marshall (where he has done some voluntary work for them in the past). Then maybe when his kids, who are barely grade school age, are heading for college he might look to get into the pro's. He could do that while remaining on the PR payroll in Foxboro, and the Kraft's are on record saying that a job with the organization is his for life already provided he wants it. I imagine he will since that will likely keep him on the spokesman/endorsement radar of team sponsors and adevertisers.

Hmm, keeping 7 does seem like a lot. Like you said, Washington's eagerness to play ST, combined with Troy's ability to fill multiple roles makes keeping 6 WRs no problem.

Stallworth, Welker and Caldwell are locks. Jackson is a lock in the sense that he will either be on the roster or on the PUP/IR depending on the severity of his injury. Brown is seemingly a lock in BB's opinion. That leaves Washington & Gaffney fighting for that 6th spot...Don't particularly want to see either of those guys go, as Gaffney has already proven to be a solid addition and Washington HOPEFULLY will do likewise.

Heck, by BB's standards "plans" and a "role" counts as a detailed statement of purpose! ;)

Seriously, I can't see him saying this if he didn't mean a position on the field. (Although with Troy, ring-making is always a possibility!)

What do expect bb to say?

OK, so we should cut Gaffney so that Brown can be inactive or sit on the bench? No. This dance is similar to two years ago, and the language from all is the same. The difference is that Troy is two years older. I do believe that bb will try (in spite of all business sense) to keep Troy if he wants to stay. But make no mistake, this will cost the patriots either a developmental player or an insurance player. In 2007, if the issue were only winning, I would want Gaffney inactive each week (in case of injury) rather than Brown.

And we've danced this dance before, with Coates, and with so many more.

The bottom line is that it is time to move on at WR, but that Troy could make the team as a STer who can be an emergency DB (or even an emergency WR or PR), much as Izzo is an emergency LB. But do understand that the days of Troy being a go-to receiver (or even part of the regular rotation) are long gone. Brady had Troy available in the playoffs and used him very little. When crunch time came, he chose not to even try for a game winning first down with Troy Brown available. Perhaps my memory is wrong and he was injured, but in any case Troy cannot be counted on to be part of the future at receiver.

And if he wants to coach (as someone said), he will start at the high school or college level.

I knew BB would not let me down!!! :rocker: :rocker: :rocker: :singing:

Then why isn't he signed yet?

I'm a little supicious.

What if Troy starts the season on PUP? That won't cost us anything. Troy can come off PUP after the inevitable WR/DB injuries.

Best strategy yet, all kidding aside

What has happened to the "FAN" in you guys!?? Geez... Can we not have loyalty to ONE guy!?

Is a Bam Childress...or a Gaffney... REALLY going to make that much of a difference in the long run?

Troy is a BETTER "player" then both of those guys (on this team) EVEN NOW.

It is not like we are hanging on to an unproductive Over the hill QB. It's a 5th WR spot!!!

The season ended with Brady trying to get the ball to Troy Brown. Brown is Brady's most comfortable target and was still able to produce 43 catches last season. Brown is, even at this point in his career, a better receiver than Gaffney. He has the two most important qualities that a receiver can have, he can get open, and he catches the ball. I could easily take Brown over Gaffney or Washington, who both have to prove a lot during training camp to even make the team.

If the Pats sign Brown now he is a lock for the opening day roster. It would take Washington and Gaffney having monstrous camps and tearing it up (which they have never done in their careers) for them to overcome Brown.
