Roughing the Passer to be point of emphasis

Fortunately they seem cognizant that roughing the passer has gotten too touchy.

The worst one called against us was when we played the Dolphins and Vince Wilfork fell and was laying stomach down on the ground when Joey Harrington walked forward and tripped over him. They called Wilfork for roughing the passer WTF???!!!

Yup, that was a new low. The ref clearly didn't see any of the action leading up to it, and just saw Harrington fall over.

Personally, I felt there wasn't enough roughing the passer calls last year. U was spearheading the charge to make looking at the QB funny after he has gotten rid of the ball into a roughing the passer call. Some of those defenders are pretty ugly and a mean look can hurt a QB's feelings pretty bad.

In all seriousness, I am damn glad they are making this a point of emphasis. There were too many ticky-tack roughing the passer calls affecting games last year. I know protecting the QB is a priority, but not having refs affecting outcomes of games is pretty important too.

They withdrew the proposed PI rule changes today. I think the concensus was if you gave the refs a lesser option they would just end up calling incidental PI more than ever.

I hope not! It was a total reactionary rule created to stop one player from seriously hurting marquee players in the league. It is a stupid rule and if they want to stop Roy Williams from injurying players, fine him more.

I believe if a rule is in the books then it should be enforced...if you don't want to then remove it. Not doing so undermines the whole authority of the rule book.

Gee, NFL. Ya THINK?! All season long - for and against the Patriots - these calls made tyhe game an F-ing JOKE. Glad they're addressing it but still frustrated by how obviously BRAINDEAD the inerpretation was all last year.

Not to mention Pereira's ability to guide his officials during the season, telling us this had to be vetted by the Competition Committee, and then the Owners, says Pereira's huevos were snipped and not the puppeteer's strings.

Box nailed it. There is a problem with league officiating and it starts at the top. Bad officiating is not policed. There appears to be little or no management corrective action taken to improve the calls by crews that are noted for doing a poor job.

Well, again, these changes are just in time aren't they?!?

Seriously, three stick out from last season: the Manning joke in the AFCCG, that god-awful phantom call on Vince Wilfork, and the non-call when London Fletcher tried to turn Tom Brady into an owl in the opener.

Good news, anytime I've been watching NFL network this off-season and see older clips (even from as recent as a few years ago), I think "that's a 15 yarder today" on pretty much every sack they show. Also, the Pats would have racked up about 2,000 penalty yards for roughing/interference/unsportsmanlike/illegal contact in Super Bowl 36 with last year's officiating. Really wish they had made a change to a 2-tiered system of pass interference (15 yards incidental, spot foul for aggregious interference), but I guess if the refs can't get one call right, they'd be even worse with 2.
