The Philadeplhia Eagles have announced the acquisition of linebacker Takeo Spikes and quarterback Kelly Holcomb from the Bills, for defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a 2008 late-round draft pick.

Spikes is signed through 2008, at base salaries of $4.5 million and $5 million this year and next. Holcomb also is inked through 2008, at $1.485 million and $1.535 million.

And Walker is signed through 2008, at base salaries of $1.3 million and $1.4 million.

Though the arrival of Spikes had been the subject of rumors throughout the day, the inclusion of Holcomb in the deal makes us wonder whether the Eagles really think that A.J. Feeley is ready to serve as the primary backup to Donovan McNabb. Which raises (again) the question of whether the Eagles should have tried to keep Jeff Garcia.

bills got ripped off. Spikes can still play..and they get Darwin Walker and a conditional 7th for Spikes + Holcomb..BAD

Philly's run defense was pretty bad last year...especially against the Saints. they could use the help.

spikes has been dead since his torn achilles
philly will be regretting this one

Yeah, I wouldn't trust Spikes at those salaries with his injuries.

I think Walker will be a good fit in the Bills' defense. Good get for the Bills considering they probably would have just cut Spikes.

OT - Eagles Deal Walker to Bills for Spikes

The Eagles have gotten themselves a linebacker.

Not just any linebacker – a proven linebacker that’s been to the Pro Bowl.

Monday night the Eagles acquired nine-year veteran Takeo Spikes and backup quarterback Kelly Holcomb from the Buffalo Bills for defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a conditional 2008 draft pick.

The strangest part of this deal is that the Eagles wanted Holcomb. They already have a career backup in A.J. Feeley, shouldn't they look to groom a kid in the emergency slot?

Maybe they realized Feeley's a bum.

And Holcomb isn't?

Feeley at least has shown he can play in Reid's offense.

Holcomb has looked better than Feeley when each has been a starter. If Tom Brady got hurt I'd play Holcomb than Feeley in his place. Feeley went through a relatively good period with the Eagles but for all we know that could have been an aberration. Everywhere else he has gone he's been terrible.

Florio should know better than to suggest that the Eagles had a choice in keeping Garcia.

Any rational football fan knows that Donovan McNabb is a million times better a quarterback than Garcia... but nobody's ever accused Eagles fans of being rational. If the Eagles lose another game because of defensive collapses and 63 yard game-ending field goals, they'll turn on McNabb like they alway do, and start clamoring for Garcia.

Marv Levy is out of his mind.

It looks like they're doing a pretty thorough dismantling. Sometimes you have to get worse before you can get better. Just not sure why they didn't start last year.

Yeah, I'd rather have Holcomb than Feeley.

As for Levy, it's gotta be hard to build a team given the budget Wilson has given him. I think he's done an OK job under the circumstances.

McNabb has missed at least 6 games in 3 of the last 6 seasons. He is officially fragile. They need somebody with some sembalance of expereience.

it's a good move for them. there's a good chance spikes is done (i.e. he has the same injury that ended lawrence taylor's career at approximately the same age.) they get another able body at position they are hurting in DT, and in this case walker is especially strong at pressuring the passer, something they didn't have at all last year from the middle of the defensive line. they are still in need of run stoppers in the middle and they have their eye on MLB willis at the 12th spot and their 1st round DT from last year mccargo is returning after breaking his foot. look for them to take another DT with their 3 picks in rounds 2 & 3.

spikes was an animal in his day - we all know that - but sadly for this athlete his day may be over. and holcomb, who really cares?

they are making better moves than miami and the jets, that's for sure.

You do realize they are spending up to the cap, don't you? What do you mean by budget? Did you see the money they were throwing around recently?

I respect the hell out of Spikes playing ability and all out attitude on the field. But every time I think of achilles injuries,2 players come to mind.

Former Dolphin Tracy Armstrong and Nomar Garciapara. Basically ended Armstrong's career right after getting his fat contract with the Raiders. We all know about Nomar,It took him quite some time to even remotely recover and he isn't half the player he was before the injury. Ofcourse Nomars ended up being a Sheath tear which was more serious. Ster#$%ds.

i agree, torn achilles is worse than torn ACL. it's just not as common that's why people don't realize how devastating it is.

They're not spending cash over the cap. Levy has said that. No other team in the league has that restriction.
