Manning ballwashing, pure and simple.
Wasn't Archie Manning pretty irrelevant throughout his career?
That's what I thought, but apparently he is the Prince Charles of the NFL.

I, for one, will gag if they show home videos of widdle Peyton in a Saints jersey.. and they will unfortunately.
If that's the game then I hope for a shootout.
I expected the Saints and Colts.
It has nothing to do with ballwashing.
It about maximizing rating$.
The Saints could struggle with a letdown season and this game wont be as marketable in October/November/December as it is now. Being the kickoff game, and the fact that Indy and NO are small market teams that are fun to watch and have national appeal, it makes the most sense to have these two teams play on Kickoff Thursday.
Besides, Pats/Colts is always marketable regardless of the month.
It all about making money.
Class, can you say "Go Saints"?
Ten Things I Think I Think
[...]
b. First game of the year: Very likely Saints at Colts, Sept. 6, the Thursday night opener at home for the defending champs. As I suspected, the league did not want to waste the potential game of the year, Pats at Colts, in a time slot that will get a good rating on NBC anyway. Look for Pats-Colts to go down in November.
c. First concert of the year: Very likely John Mellencamp, in downtown Indy before the Colts-Saints affair.
d. The schedule will be announced April 5 on ESPN, which owns much of the free world and is currently in negotiations to buy the rest.
e. Giants-Cowboys, Sept. 9, Sunday night, with the league counting on Romo Appeal and the buzz around the Eli Manning referendum to put a big Week 1 rating on the board.
Wasn't Archie Manning pretty irrelevant throughout his career?
If the Sunday game is Cowboys at Giants then our season opening game is really narrowed down. There will be a concert sat the 8th at gillette probably taking that option away. We play the giants, colts and boys on the road already. The jets wouldn't host because the giants are home. This leaves pats at balt, cincy, buff or miami as the opener.
IMO, it is about ballwashing. What could be worse for the coronation of everything Manning, then on the same openning night, to hang their banner and have their hats handed to them by a Pat's team our for vengance.
