Here's why we like to be "shocked" by this guy. He's not decent enough to acknowledge our precious feelings. It's so inconsiderate to grind our collective noses in the "I've got it so good" outcome he's getting in life. Big fan boo-hoo... and it's the same with all these guys when they're making their 20-something decisions, and we're 30 or 40 or 50 etc.-something fans, who do a 9-to-5 or the equivalent, and strain what remaining emotions we have left on Sunday hoping that these millionaires succeed on the field.
We don't need reminders that their lives can be debauched playgrounds if they choose. We're relatively lucky in NE at QB. But then we had the murderer at TE, some DUIs an DUIDs, an embarrassing gronk pic from time to time. Irving Fryer's domestic troubles.
We don't like that these guys are pretty much set for life, if we so much as know their names, and they still seem bent on effing themselves up.
Even middle class people have a slog of it most days. Don't get me wrong - these guys have to study their craft too, and they have physical training demands the rest of us just wouldn't accept. But they do have extensive time off, they do play a game for a living, and maybe most to the point, they do make their whole lives happen in a 10-year career (or closer to the league average, a 3-year career... in which case they probably have another gig, but a good start.)
The rest of us put in a lifetime to save the amount they get as a pot sweetener in the difference between one offer and another on a given contract.
So I'm sorry, yes, we do want the illusion that they're these great kids with natural humility... nobody wants to think their "hero" 20 years their junior would make the "brushing something off his shoulder" gesture if they were in an elevator with them. That's what the mountain-of-coke, 8-girlfriends-and-a-lambo, still-going-to-jail routine evokes, I think... people not appreciating how good their life is in the first place.
Stipulated, that's all subconscious... it's just the reason stuff like this pisses off the average fan
