Potentially the Chernobyl of Danny Amendola threads. Either a great public service or an epic disaster. A noble undertaking nonetheless.

How about: I have no clue. But hopefully we'll get a chance to see much more of the guy while healthy before having to render judgment.

Danny Amendola does not suck.

Julian Edelman does not suck.

Starting them both in a 3 WR set is a sucky idea.

Let's see if we can limit this stuff a bit. Have at it, people.

Thank you for starting this thread. It is indeed a public service. If all goes well, once otherwise interesting threads threaten to disappear into the black hole of Amendola discussion, people will be able to say "there's a place for that ..."

For the record, I'm in the pro-Amendola camp in that I think he's a very talented player. I also think that those who are favouring Dobson and Boyce over him (and over Thompkins) are building their hopes on the idea of what those two might be rather than any evidence from what they've actually done.

That said, I'm also (and have been consistently) an Edelman fan. Though he was unlucky with impact injuries, I don't think that there have been any signs that he is intrinsically injury prone.

Amendola, on the other hand, is more worrying. Pulled groins aren't the random accidents that broken forearms are.

Game 1 vs. Buffalo last year was a loss without him gutting it out in the 2nd half. In fact, that effort may have kept him from being able to heal for the rest of the year.

If healthy, he definitely does not suck. If healthy, he may be better than Welker.

IF HEALTHY, though, could be used for a number of players who did not cut it in this league. If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. This may be Amendola's path, unfortunately.

Thank you Deus for your public service
Take no offense as I invoke Ian's mighty Thread Ignore!

Every thread remotely related to Danny Amendola ultimately turns in the official Danny Amendola sucks thread no matter if you make a separate one or not.

Yeah and if Shane Vereen played as he did in week 1 of 2013 he could be better than Adrian Peterson is. Amendola had 10 catches for 104 yards, which would not have even been a notable game for Welker, interestingly enough Welker also against the Bills had 16 catches for 217 yards, and 2 touchdowns back in week 3 of 2011.

Hmmm..... so you would say that Amendola is not as good as either Edelman or Welker, then, right? Well, is he better than, say, Andrew Hawkins, in your estimation?

He also played HALF that game with his groin ripped from the bone, which leads back to the point in the first place.....

IF HEALTHY.

Not really sure what your point was?

Amendola does not suck. He is a solid NFL receiver, but in context to his contract, he sucks. He has been part of an NFL team for 5 regular seasons, in 4 of the 5 he was a top 2 target on his team. Amendola’s average season is 50 catches, 471 yards, and 1.8 touchdowns. His averages 9.2 yards per catch, which is the lowest of any WR with 100+ career catches in the last 25 years.

He was signed to replace Wes Welker; in 2013, he had 45% of the catches, and 46% of the yardage that Welker produced in 2012. This means Amendola was less than half the player he was signed to replace, even worse if you take Welker’s career earnings with the Patriots and divide them by the 6 seasons he played here he was paid an average of $4.6M per season, Amendola is being paid an average of $5.7M.

Posters and fans want to point to these games in which Amendola excels and say if he is ever healthy he is going to do this every week, the reality is that is foolish. Plenty of players have a couple great games in a season, if Dennard played as he did in the Colts game every week he would be the best CB ever. What makes Welker great and other players great is the show up every single week and produce, Amendola does not do that, he had 357 yards in 3 games (Bills, Steelers, Dolphins) and 276 yards in his other 9 games. The playoffs were a perfect example of the inconsistent nature of Amendola, against the Colts 77 receiving yards, against the Broncos 0 receiving yards. Many will blame this on a groin injury, which is why I will point out that in 2012 he had 26 catches on 28 targets for 262 yards in 2 games (Redskins, 49ers), and in the other 9 games he played he had 37 catches on 73 targets for 404 yards. He caught 92% of the balls thrown his way in 2 games and 50.6% of the balls thrown his way in the other 9 games.

Amendola entered the league in 2008, this season will be his 7th season as part of an NFL organization, players do not generally make the 7th year leap. Amendola has never had more than 689 yards in a season and it is not because of anything other than himself, blaming a week groin injury for his AFCCG performance is absurd. When he went down he had a return timetable of 2-6 weeks, the AFCCG was 19 weeks later.

In short as I said he does not suck, but he is not that good, he is a solid slot receiver who if he was being paid $2.5M a year I would be thrilled to have, but at his current rate he is not in my wheelhouse. Amendola is on borrowed time, the likelihood that he is here in 2015 is about 5%, and if he is injured again this season, his NFL career will become just like Austin Collie’s where he does not receiver more than a 1-year contract.

While I think you often go off the rails when it comes to Amendola, and I think even the greats are less inconsistent than we would like to think, you make a very solid point here, IMO.

Welker's not the greatest slot receiver in NFL history because he notched more than 100 catches once. He's the greatest slot receiver in NFL history because he gets open fast enough to catch more than 100 catches year after year.

Jerry Rice isn't the greatest receiver ever because he had some spectacular games. If that's what it was all about, Randy Moss would be considered the greatest receiver ever, pretty much unanimously.

etc....

This is not Amendola's first NFL season so even if the groin was an excuse what about all the other years when players like Gibson and Lloyd were outproducing him in St Louis.

Amendola had a monster game against the Redskins in 2012, that is when the next Welker talk took flight. Before that game Amendola was talked about in the same breath as Greg Salas in terms of potential. Go back and look at the discussion in the training camp, preseason of 2012 the talk was for us to trade a 6th round pick for Amendola.

Also it is nieve to think that in his six seasons Welker never had an injury. Welker played through them and still produces 100+ catches and 1000+ yards.

Who was throwing him the ball?

Do you really think that matters that much? Welker caught 100+ balls with Matt Cassell as his QB.

In addition Sam Bradford is not a horrible QB.
