Tomase has a good read today, reminding us of Welker's diversity.

I gotta think he's in the mix at KR/PR... I had forgotten those returns he had against us until reading the article... and of course, it never hurts to have another kicker availalbe in case of emergency... no question BB values the additional help Welker brings... he really does seem like a younger Troy Brown in many ways.

Let's hope he and Troy get a chance to play on the same team!

How was our special teams ranked in terms of allowing punt returns? For some reason, I thought we were not good in that area. If I am right, then I am not giving much importance to Welker's runs against our ST. But at the same time, I am not meaning to put him down. Want to see him play for at least half a season before deciding.

On Brown coming back, I hope so!!

We were ass-end of the league in net punting average.

I like Welker as a punt returner, he is sure handed and can break a few but I think we can have someone more explosive returning kick offs.

Maroney's the only other guy on the team that strikes me as having a good chance to return one for a TD - but now more than ever, he's too valuable as a RB to risk in the return game.

Hobbs and Maroney are more explosive but I agree to valueable to use. While I think Welker is good returner and very shore handed I just don't think he has the ability to break it for a huge gain but he will conisitantly get a decent return. which makes him great for punt returns but imo not kick returns

So I guess my answer is a rook or Hobbs if he isnt starting, or maybe willie andrews he seemed to be explosive or how bout chad jack if he could get healthy.

I thought Welker's return ability was clearly debunked in previous threads. Our guys had better averages than him. Its just that he specifically burned us a few times so fans have a skewed views. I'll find the link.

Yes.
Quite honestly I don't care what #s he put up in Miami because they really have no bearing on what he'll do here in our system. He's got the right attitude,he's got speed,he can run,he can cut, we had to double-team him,and he's versatile.

Whatever he did or didn't do under Saban,Harrington,Culpepper,etc makes no difference to me at all. He's smart, he's willing to learn,he wants to be here,and he's got skills.

Miami got a draft pick so we could avoid all the BS that was bound to ensue,and as Pioli said there's always a danger of losing the player. If the Pats think he's a second Troy Brown then he's worth every penny. He's also a player for the 'now',not a rookie. And call me crazy but I don't feel threatened by Miami's possession of a couple of our picks because Belipioli they aren't,let's face it. I'm glad Kraft deflected the drama-the memory of a few well-known past dramas still haunt my memory.

What's not to like about Wes Welker? He hasn't even played a down yet.

That depends on whether there was an inclination to take a particular position in the 2nd round. Given the supposed depth at WR this year I'd have to think that a 2nd round selection would have had a lot of upside.

The downside of course is, like Jackson, WRs usually need a few years to develop.

How many passes did Welker catch his rookie season? More or less than Jackson? (So I guess that means that Welker was a bust just like Jackson supposedly is)

So if WR were a candidate for our 2nd round choice we basically get immediate return instead of waiting 2-3 years.

As far as whether Welker can return kicks - it may be that the brain trust on Patsfans.com has proven he can't do it, but personally, I'll wait for BB to make that call. If it turns out he does return kicks and punts and does so well, I'll look forward to reading everyone's mea culpa's on that one as well!
