Let's say that the Pats are on the board and all the guys you're thinking just *might* be there are gone. No Reggie Nelson, Darrelle Revis, Joe Staley, Anthony Spencer, etc. And let's say also that you can't find a partner to trade down or out.

Who are your fallback picks at 24 & 28 among the guys who are relatively certain to be there? Do you go with a player who’s seen as solid value but not a great match for your needs, like OG Grubbs? Do you overdraft a solid guy at a position of need, like LB Harris? Or splurge on a Brian Leonard? Or take a risk on a Brandon Meriweather? Or...???

Ben Grubbs, Josh Wilson

ANY WR not named CJ2... Eric Weddle... Anthony Spencer... Tony Ugho...

I would NOT want any of those guys.

I think you misunderstood the question. The question is if all of your top targets are off the board, who do you take? Guys who will be there and you'll be OK picking.

I mean, hell, my worst case scenario is the fourth string quarterback at Tennessee and the Pittsburg St. punter. I don't want those guys.

Beason and Zach Miller

Yeah, just to be clear it's "who would you pick in this worst-case scenario," not "what draft picks would make you shoot the tv"!

But Mogamedogz, I'm curious why you singled out Eric Weddle as a shoot-the-tv guy? I've been thinking that a worst-case draft of guys like David Harris and Weddle wouldn't be so bad. Smart, reliable seniors at need positions who should challenge for starting jobs in their 2nd seasons.

Anthony Gonzalez and Stewart Bradley

QB, TE, P, K, LS, FB <--- any of those positions

Oh... I see what you're saying now... Well, a worse case scenario for me would mean that Mike Griffin (who is @ the top of my "realistically being there" Draft board) is gone.

I guess I would Take a chance on Meriweather and hope the team could help him mature and better his life off the field. The Kid has all the talent in the world on the gridiron. He can play FS and possibly even some CB at the next level. He is a VERY good player.

Then @ 28, I think I would like them to take a flyer on McCauley. Another questionable pick character wise, but I think that he is just unfairly being judged.

Personally I think paring him back up with (former FSU teammate) James Sanders would bring the best out of him. Physically, the kid has all the tools to be a big time play-maker.

As for Weddle...Im just not a fan. I watch his film, and I just dont see anything special about his game. I think he is more a product of Mel Kiper hype than anything else.

Good question, this is one of the reasons I am positive about the draft.

Worst case is we end up a couple of players like Jon Beason and Merriweather or a David Harris and Leonard. They may be "reaches" but are all players who can contribute at a high level, they may not be pro bowl caliber but are similar to the B, B+ profile we have consistently across the roster.

Very worst case , Troy Smith QB Ohio State at 24 and Mason Crosby K at 28...

Oh... dont get Meriweather's talent mistaken with his character flaws... At his BEST he DEF has Pro Bowl calibre talent. The kid could end up being a STUD in the NFL; if he gets his head together.

excluding ridiculous picks, like a QB and a K, the worst would probably be "B+" profile. How about David Harris and Josh Wilson? I'd be happy but picking those players probably would result in the media screeching "REACH."

If think if they drafted a LB and a CB the media would say "that makes sense I (the great media) have been saying they need more depth at those positions". If the media agrees with the picks we should be a little worried but I could live with Wilson and Harris.

Hardly head scratchers like a second TE or a Guard, both those picks turned out ok.

Maybe, he might even be able to turn water in wine but my point was that in a worst case they hit two doubles instead of two grand slams.

Jon Beason and Brian Leonard.

Don't know the players like y'all do.

But i think i know the positions.
Best Linebacker Available and Best DB Available.

Interesting conundrum. I was looking at both Fox and Scout.com listings to get a feel for who would be there to consider. Arguably you want to take BPA for your system, which one is next varies widely between these two rankings.

The first candidate they seem to agree on (and I consider might be a "fit") is DE Ikaika Alama-Francis (Hawaii), who is coming off an injury and other than competing with Hill doesn't really do much for depth concerns. Anthony Gonzalez would be the next match, but he's another drop in a fairly full bucket, someone to compete with Welker and Troy (maybe) for slot duties. The OG/OC types are the same way (by the way, Grubbs would be gone at 18 if you use Scout's ranking).

I'm curious when Scout.com last updated, I'd like to get a handle on their trends.

With such disparity between the two rankings, I take one fairly safe selection at a position which already looks set on paper, RB Brian Leonard (the two sites disagree significantly on Leonard, but I can say I've seen him in action during the season and not just in All-Star play). The second is one of greater risk at a position of "need," but a player both rankings have solidly at the top of the third, LB Stewart Bradley. Davis Harris whom you used in your example is also one they agree on at the top of the third, which leaves me with the option, highest floor or highest ceiling? Bradley would seem to have the inside/outside versatility to give him a higher ceiling.

My "worst cast" for the Pats would be them taking Anthony Spencer and Aaron Ross. I don't think that Spencer has the ability to play OLB the way the Pats need and I don't believe that Ross has what it takes to be on the Pats.

After that, I don't want Ted Ginn or Jarvis Moss.
