From KFFL:
Bills | Spikes on the trade block
Wed, 21 Mar 2007 18:58:48 -0700

Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports Buffalo Bills LB Takeo Spikes is on the trade block, and all the economic factors point to him being traded. It remains hard to see how they can avoid spending more cash than their cap limit of $112 million with Spikes on the roster. He's scheduled to make $4.6 million in 2007.

Maybe wait to see if they have to release him. I doubt that the Bills would trade him to the Pats (you would think they would still be greatful for that Bledsoe trade, but I doubt it). Spikes would fit nicely right into the ILB rotation.

Imagine a LB corp of Bruschi, Colvin, Vrabel, Thomas, and Spikes!!!!

I've always liked the way that Spikes plays.

Yeah ok, I guess I'll take him :)

He would be awesome!

Spikes would be sexy for about a year, but I think the Pats should start finding replacement LB

He had an Achilles tear in '05, and didn't really play well coming back from it last year, so nobody really knows if he can still play at a high level, or not.

well if we could find out at a cheap price I'd sure like to try!

Yeah at his best he is one of the best LB's in the league. But who knows what we would be getting.

well, since he has the potential to be one of the best, doesn't that mean he's worth gambling on? structure a contract where you only pay him if he's back to form and get him cheap and see where he's at.

imagine if he returned to form?
hello?
he'd be a monster!!

He has to have issues though since the Bills are willing to trade him. They probably doubt he can be a monster again. And it's not like taking a risk on a free agent. Since it's a trade it's an even bigger risk because we would be lsing draft picks and/or players.

IIRC, that was the exact injury Rodney had trouble recovering from the year before SD cut him. Worked out well for us that time. :)

I'd be thrilled if NE sent a 4th to BUF for Spikes.

Rodney had a groin injury.

Damn are the Bills re-building or what, if "re-building" means dumping all your best players. It might be best for them in the long-term, but Bills fans better be ready for some losing this year.

well, it could be simply a matter of salary cap for the Bills. they're letting everyone go.

also, they may just cut him, so we could get him then for nothing.
but with all those 5, 6, 7 round compensation picks that will never amount to much, I 'd not even blink to package say 4-5 low round picks or even through in a fourth and get spikes.

I actually don't think it will happen, but it's nice to imagine!

Last year Spikes was a shell of his former pro bowl self. Most of the locals believe he's done and that it's only a matter of time until he's released.

At this stage of his career I highly doubt that Spikes is worthy of being traded for. If the Pats want him I would imagine they'll simply wait for him to get cut. If the Bills keep him then I don't think we've missed out on much.

Really? Couldn't he have just been not fully recovered form his injury? Those type of injuries take time. Sometimes 2-3 years.

Do you really think that because of that injury he's never going to be good again now? It may very well be true but if he gets cut I'd love to see us give him some time with out organization to try and regain his form.

ya never know...

Can compensatory picks even be traded? I think the teams have to use them, I could be wrong. In those low rds. tho, BB an SP could really find a gem. I know the odds are very slim, but, their is no FO I would rather have using those picks. I would love to get Spikes if he cam cheap. He still plays with fire and massive intensity. That would be great for this defense if we dont bring Seau back, but I do agree that we need to get younger at the position.

You are right that you never know but personally I think the combo of achilles tear coupled with 10 years of wear and tear at the NFL level has pretty much done Spikes in.

I am a chiropractor and I care for athletes from all walks of life including pros. While I rarely treat achilles problems directly I have treated numerous athletes for symptons (leg related mostly) resulting from achilles rehab. The vast majority of them never regain full form and function because they are unable to properly train and develop their leg muscles and achilles after traumatic rupture.

I haven't heard a lot of talk about this, but that's got to be really hard to build a competitive team if the owner won't allow them to spend any cash over the cap. IMO that shows that the revenue sharing isn't working as well as it should.

Actually, its showing that Ralph Wilson is a loser who is bitter and is pulling what the Minnesota Twins owner did about 10 years ago. He was taking all the shared revenue and pocketing it, while still crying poverty.

Fact is that the Bills and Wilson do have the money to spend on cash over cap, but Wilson is being a jerk about it because he got out-voted 30-2. Not to mention he's a vain man who refuses to sell the naming rights to the stadium. He could very easily sell the right with the caveat that they must keep his name in the title. For Exampls: HSBC's Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Also, Wilson doesn't want to do what's needed to increase his revenue. Ralph Wilson stadium is one of the oldest stadiums now and its doesn't pull in the revenue that a Gillette Stadium or FedEx Field pulls in. Yet Wilson doesn't want to do what's needed to get a new Stadium built that will have corporate sponsors for the Luxury Boxes and such. He'd rather just field a bad team and not do the work needed.

OK, but either way, I'd be pissed to holy hell if I were a Bills fan about this.

While much of what you say is true, in all fairness to Wilson, WNY is a recessed economy which really isn't conducive to drawing sizeable corporate sponsorship. I suppose the corporate draw could come from Southern Ontario, and especially Toronto but, logistically, it's not all the feasable.
