Stallworth has the talent and all of the makings of a true #1 star receiver BUT ..If he is so good and was so valuable to his previous teams why did they let him go?

Was it because he was injury prone?
Was it a chemical problem they did not want to deal with?
Was he a problem child in the locker room?
Was he just too overpaid and the previous teams decided it was not in their best financial matters to keep him because he was not worth the big bucks even though they would have been somewhat O.K. cap wise to keep him?

My biggest concern is the fact that his previous teams have coaches who are truly 2 of the best in the game - Sean Payton who has been a big factor in making every QB and his WR core look good in the past 7 years (something like coaching 4 3,000+ yard passers in a row (including Bledsoe) when he was OC/Passing coordinator) - He is to be respected with anything offensive related

And of course Andy Reid who is no doubt in the top 5 of the best HCs in the game and a great offensive mind himself.

Why did Andy and Sean let him go without making a big push to keep him? - I hope we find out its different this time around....2 Good coaches usually keep a player they think will be a important piece of the puzzle to win a championship..With Donte,They said "I'll pass, you can sign him".

They are probably gun shy after T.O.

Stallworth has missed 4 of the last 44 games. Dieon Branch has missed one game more due to injury the Stallworth over there careers (same amount of games). Stallworth is here for cheap money bound by a flexible one year deal. If he works out it will be a tremendous move. If not they move on after this season. There is a ton of upside in this kid.

Relaxxxxxxx

Ohh well, the hell with Philly. All I know is we got a player who averaged 19.1yards per catch last season, runs a low 4.30, and really wanted to come here.

Im sorry, but this "injury prone" stuff is a bit overblown if you ask me. Out of the last 44 games Stallworth missed 4. He missed 12 of the 68 total games he has played. He has missed less time then Deion in the same amount of games.

With the way Stallworth's deal is structured, The affordable price, the kids ability, and his speed, I think it was a tremendous move.

A good situation and winning can do wonders for a "sore hammy"......

I think last year in Philly was the first year people started to become really impressed with Stallworth.

Yes, he's still got alot to prove, but I think it's not necessary to be overly concerned about him, I think he's going to do really really well here in New England.

Stallworth or Doug Gabrial... UM I will take Donte

Stallworth or whoever the pats have

I still will take Stallworth.. No worries..

Some young men need time to mature.

I'm optimistic.

Not confident, but optimistic.

He wasn't exactly let go. He was traded once. Now he's a free agent.

He wound up on the Pat's because he wants $5-6M/yr kind of money, and nobody wanted to pay it.

Rather than take what he can get, he has decided to try and prove it by playing with the game's best QB for a year.

Not worried as essentially he is here in a great system, with a great QB and playing for a contract. Great opportunity for him, do not expect anything less than a superb effort.

He is worth the risk for the money the Patriots are paying. Hopefully he has matured.

and hopefully the pats training staff can get rid of that hamstring problem he has...then he'd be too good:D

In N.O. he was immature, and didn't always feel he needed to be on time for meetings. Apparently, in Philly he was a great teammate, and started to mature, such that they made a nice run at trying to keep him. The Patriots were the "winners" for his services.

Now, if you believe all the right things Stallworth is saying, those immature days are a thing of the past. He sounds sincere when he says it, and we are going to find out.

Was Sean Payton even the coach when Donte was at New Orleans?
I know he was with Philly last year but last year was also SPaytons first year with the Saints, wasn't it?

Quite simply for the only reason you overlooked - because they have another deep threat on the roster.

Reggie Brown was drafted in 2005 and had a breakout season last year with 47 cathces averaging nearly 18 yards a catch. The Eagles were definately interested in keeping Stallworth but can get along quite well without him.

With Brown on the roster it actually make more sense for them to bring in someone like Kevin Curtis who shows major promise as a posession receiver... which is what they did.

Try the question the other way. With Stallworth now on the team do you think the Patriots should trade for Randy Moss? No, of course not - because beyond all his problems we have already addressed our deep threat need.

I think it's safe to assume Stallworth will be a very productive player for the pats and a great addition.

I'd save the worrying for things worth worrying about.

He was traded by th Saints, which isn't really being let go, but you could see it as that. Philly wanted to keep him, and even gave him a contract offer, but he turned their offer down for NE's. I can't see how you can say two teams let him go, since that is false.

Also, from everything I have heard Stallworth is a good lockerroom guy, so I don't think you have to worry about that.

It may even have been Payton's decision to trade him, partly based on what he observed during TC.

Stallworth does, indeed, have much to prove in 2007, as does Washington and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Gaffney and Caldwell.

My question is: would the patriots have been better-off signing a solid, if less spectacular, WR like Bennett or Curtis to work with Brady for the long term, instead of giving what amounts to tryout contracts to Stallworth, et al.? The worst-case scenario, in March 2008, would be Welker, Jackson and nobody else. Meanwhile, payaton would be entering his 11th season with Marvin Harrison, and his 8th with Reggie Wayne. That's how he can throw to spots on the field, toward which his WRs haven't yet made their cuts. The scumbag.

Bennett got a huge contract, and I think Curtis got a pretty sizeable one as well, so I don't think signing them for the money they got would have been any better of an option, especially since as you put it they're "solid, if less spectacular", than Stallworth. Curtis is at least somewhat simular to Welker as well, so I don't think it would have made sense to bring Curtis in (with his contract) after already trading for Welker.
