Is Atlanta positioning to move up for Calvin Johnson?

Why was the switch of draft choices part of this deal?

ATL at # 8 could be positining itself to trade up to # 2
(Lions),to take Calvin Johnson.

Vick needs a real go to guy.....His receivers all have the dropsys,Also,Johnson is from Georgia Tech.

i doubt it....because of the depth at WR this year's draft...you'll probably see 3 WR's go off the board by the end of round one...and i think theres like a list of 8-10 great wr's in the draft, at least projected going on the first day....passing up on laron landry would be insane, considering the fact that they now have the texan's #8 pick in the 2nd round, and (i would assume) their own 2nd round pick at #10....

if the falcons did take cj...then they'll have to depend on vick to get the ball to cj horn and crumpler every game...it'll be a shootout every week since the db's (minus hall) are not that great...

I'm with you... I think that this is exactly what the Birds are trying to do. CJ is a freak of nature.... kid can do some great things and IF the Birds can get any sort of good deal to move up and get him, they'll pull the trigger...I don't know what they'd have to add to the #8, one #2 for this year and the HOU #2 for next year... but whatever it is... it'd basically be their backup QB and (whatever that pick or picks are) for a true "stud WR".... in ATL, where they believe that all is good except for WR.

Now, I believe that Vick is the problem, but hey... I'm not them!

62 % of the respondents on ESPN's Draft poll believe WR is Atlanta's biggest need.

I've Seen alot of Mock Drafts with Atlanta Taking Landry at #10.

Maybe the thought the Pats were going to move in front of them and draft Landry?

The reason the terms of the deal are like this is probably simple -- Atlanta squeezed for everything it could get, and Houston wasn't willing to actually give up its first round pick this year or next. So what they got is the most value they could extract.

As for a trade -- well, Detroit and Cleveland have both been burned with high choices spent on WRs. And both could benefit from getting a big pile of high picks. So Atlanta has the ammo to move up, potentially, whether to Cleveland's #2 or to a Detroit #3 after a Cleveland/Detroit swap in which Cleveland winds up with Quinn.

And yes, the ultimate reload would then be to trade down one more time to pick up the Pats' two firsts.

Alternatively, Houston might decide to recoup some of its count of high picks by trading down from #10.

If someone offered us a five or six for our two #1's, would we do it? Would we go for CJ even though we have a few potential playmakers?

I'm guessing it's very unlikely. I can see it at a "physical freak" position -- Calvin Johnson (who won't slip even that far) or the second coming or Richard Seymour (except that the need is questionable given that Ty Warren can presumably be resigned). But otherwise? Very hard to envision.

Roy Williams turned out to not quite live up the game-changing hype at safety, and there's really no basis for thinking Landry et al. will. And probably he'd be the target, just based on needs-vs.-supply comparisons.
