Tom Curran: Mallett to the Texans may soon be done.

So if Mallett never gets traded, will people be upset?
I will only be upset if they take less than value for him, anything that isn't a real upgrade on what they paid is a losing proposition. If they don't get what they want then keep him.

Yes but we would still get a comp pick out of it. We don't get that if we trade him this season, so I have been putting forth a scenario that sees 3 QB on the roster this year, Mallett as primary backup, #3 as understudy to move up after one year is under his belt, and we end up with a comp pick that would have approximately the same value if we traded him for a 3rd round right now.

Comp picks are not fait accomplis. A team can lose three players who sign $10M/year contracts, sign four players at $1M/year each, and get no comp picks.

Oh, one more thing: the comp pick would be in 2016.

The best thing about this debate is that it gets settled in the next 48 hours.

sadly the mallet getting trading debate wont end until mallet is no longer on the patriots. it could be a day before the final game of the season and someone will start a thread asking "will the pats franchize mallet and then trade him like Cassell?"

Get rid of Mallett while we can, there are QB's in this draft that are probably already better than him at the next level by the time pre season rolls round.

I have always felt that if O'Brien passes on him it ends the trade discussion. Someone could mention it but the real test is now.

For the love of God @jays52 would you PLEASE start posting with some regularity again!
We both know I can't promise that :)

Hahha I'll have more time soon my friend. I've had a busy run lately but things are starting to smooth out. Note to self: don't start a new business and get hitched in the same year :)

except you dont get that 3rd and 5th. its not always about the "point value" BB would rather have 2 rookies to put through the paces then 1.

Have you missed all these years of BB adding 2nd round picks to the team?

he wouldn't be adding one, hed just be switching places in the 2nd, and losing his backup QB. thats bad value imo.

then again im not bb so maybe hed be interested in that.

But by moving up, he'd be in a position to drop down again.

There's a lot of assumptions that have to made to arrive at the conclusion that we're getting a 3rd when he leaves as a FA. Rumor has it that the Pats have already turned down 2nd round offers, though, so my guess would be that we're getting the #33, hopefully straight up rather than giving back something more than a late round pick.

the only way we trade mallet now that bridgewater is a viking, is if we plan on taking a qb in the 4th or 5th round.

i don't see BB risking losing mallet before taking someone else, and so i dont see mallet getting traded during the draft.

had bridgewater been available, I could have seen a mallet for 33, and at 33 taking bridgewater.

I know I'm an ass for bumping this thread but why is this the top thread at 12am on draft night?

That of course assumes that the Patriots were actually that high on Bridgewater relative to, say, Garoppolo or Murray, etc., etc.

Bridgewater being gone has zilch to do with a Mallett trade being manufactured with the Texans...if anything it helps....

Can't imagine Texans will draft Derek Carr......maybe but man David left a nasty taste in their mouths. Garoppolo maybe, Mettenberger has had red flags about his back so Mallett could be really intriguing to O'Brien and safer as well.

Pats would likely draft Tom Savage later on if Mallett is traded

I don't know about that. He traded Bledsoe before he had a decent, experienced backup on the roster.

Mallett's contract runs out at the end of this season. And I can't see BB giving him decent money to stick around a few more years. So I'm pretty confident he's planning on drafting or trading for another backup QB in a day or two anyway. So if we can get anything at all for Mallett I think BB prefers that to getting nothing whatsoever next spring.

At first I saw getting #33 for Mallett & our 2nd as way too rich. But now, I'm not so sure. Mallett's a hell of a lot better than anybody left in the draft. I'm really glad Bridgewater went @ #32. I'm pretty sure the Texans won't open up themselves to a PR disaster by taking Carr. Garroppolo doesn't fit them because of height. Mettzenberger has a chronic back problem. And the dropoff after those guys is pretty sizable. Our major competition would be if Washington was willing to trade the Texans Kirk Cousins. But I think the 'Skins have totally ruled that out.

I don't really think Mallett is "worth" almost a full round jump in the 2nd. But now it's more a matter of supply vs demand.
