Tom Curran: Mallett to the Texans may soon be done.

If it happens, it's a guarantee that Houston is taking Clowney #1 overall (pretty much assured anyway).

Would have to think that would be for the Texans 3rd round pick (65 overall). Mallett was taken 74th overall in 2011. I can't see them giving him up for anything less than their 3rd round pick. It would be highway robbery if they gave the Pats #33 unless there are more parts involved in the deal.

If this is true, I wonder what they will get. Will it be part of a package? Will the Pats package another pick or two with Mallett to get their second rounder? Will it be a mid round pick. I doubt it will be for the #1 overall considering what the Pats would have to package with Mallett to get all the way up there.

Not necessarily. Definitely means they wouldn't take a QB but they could also go for Mack or trade out (reports indicate they aren't trading though)

I think the #33 is in play, but only if the Pats package another pick or two with it. As I said, the Pats don't have the draft capital to trade up to #1 unless they package their first this year and their first next year with Mallett and that may not be enough.

That's gonna happen regardless. They're going to need to get the stretchers and ice baths ready in Indy, Jacksonville, and Nashville.

What if they have two guys rated highly, Tuitt and ASJ for example. Perhaps a swap of 2nd round picks make sense. The Texans get Clowney and their QB without losing a pick.

That makes it high likely they draft a QB, sign undrafted free agents or a vet free agent.

IDK, I have heard conflicting reports. Some say they are desperately trying to trade down and others are saying they are locked in on their #1 pick. Big surprise there that there would be conflicting reports like this before the draft.

I don't think the #1 overal is enough for Mallet it should be at least #1 and #33 and that might need to be bumped up to next years #1 if the Pats need to pay for airfare. Maybe they could include JJ watt.

I dont think there is a chance in hell they are trading up to #1. They would need to give the farm for that. But who knows, that would certainly spice things up.

Better question is - why is this being leaked out there now? Could it just be a smoke screen to drum up interest from other teams for Mallett? Would be interested to hear where the source is coming from.

Lets just start with those 2 then we can move on toward the list you can see in another post :D

I think if they were going to trade down, they would have done it already when Buffalo was trying to throw everything but the kitchen sink at them (supposedly) the last couple of weeks. They're locked in and it's more than likely for Clowney. Even if they don't get Mallett, they'll probably still have a few highly rated QB's left with #33 that they can get. Clowney makes that pass rush scary.

He's trying to backtrack.

Second source says nothing doing at the moment on Mallett to Houston. We'll watch how it plays out. Makes sense if Clowney is No. 1.

That's the swap I proposed a while back. It's a win/win scenario that gives 2nd round value to Mallett without actually costing the Texans any picks. NE would then be working with #29 and #33. Then, if the draft gods are really in our favor, we could see a trade down from #29 into the mid 30s which could net an additional 4th round pick.

I agree the chances of the Pats getting the #1 pick overall is remote at best. Most likely as you say, not a shot in hell.

I agree about the timing. I think there is a chance that several of the first round QBs will drop to 33. By trading before the draft, the Texans may risk using a high pick on Mallett and then have a QB they feel is better dropping to 33.
