I assume a 3-WR offense and a 4-2-5 base defense, plus the kickers:

1: (8) Solder, Mankins, Jones, Wilfork, Hightower, Mayo, Revis, McCourty
2: (3) LaFell/Dobson, Vollmer, Gronkowski
3: (2) RIdley, Harmon/Ryan
4: (1) Gostkowski
5: (1) Ninkovich
6: (1) Brady
7: (1) Edelman
Not: (7) Amendola, Wendell, Connolly, Kelly, Browner, Arrington, Allen

Forgot about Browner and Kelly being UDFA, pretty good players.

Interesting. According to today's Denver Post, 29.9% of all players who appeared on active NFL rosters at some time last year were UDFAs.

Then that would mean the Pats/Belichick has a MUCH higher success rate than other teams with UDFAs

... which is the point I just made in the "Worst Belichick draft picks" thread

The draft is a big crap shoot - and Belichick like every other coach strikes out on many - but he makes up for it with quality starters from among the ranks of UDFAs

Part of the reason for the success of the team!

I'd be curious to see what the breakdown was just for starters.

I suppose that analysis would take me about 7 minutes at Patriots.com/roster and a pencil/piece of paper.

Looking at defense...

1st rd picks
Jerod Mayo
Donta Hightower
Chandler Jones
Vince Wilfork
Darrelle Revis
Devin McCourty

Jamie Collins - 2nd rd
Logan Ryan - 3rd rd
Duron Harmon - 3rd rd
Pat Chung - 2nd rd

Tommy Kelly - Undrafted
Brandon Browner - Undrafted
Armond Armstead - Undrafted
Rob Ninkovich - 5th rd
Alfonso Dennard - 7th rd

Our offense has less high picks. Makins and Solder are the only 1st rounders on our offense!

WR - we have a 7th rounder(Edelman), and 2 UDFA (Amendola, Thompkins)

1st rounders are now up to 9 by my count with Will Smith signed

I have a feeling Smith won't make the team. Buchannan and even Bequette have been earning quite a bit of praise in TC while Smith has been quiet.

That Seahawks PDF really seems to be making a better case for coming to New England. :)

So the Pats are above league average then.
Not necessarily because that chart says its the current roster. That includes players who will not make the team, and higher % of cuts are likely to be UDFAs.
The Denver Post # was players who played in games, so its a bit apples to oranges.

wowww its crazy how fast things change in the Not For Long league.

Remember the 2010 Draft. Everyone thought it was amazing..... and it was at the time. But only short term. Now in 2014, only Gronk and McCourty remain on the roster.

Aaron Hernendez - in jail

Brandon Spikes - eccentric personality and limited 2 down player. I like Spikes but we're set at LB and I have a feeling BB's patience wore thin with Spikes character.

Jermaine Cunningham - showed a bit of promise but ultimately was a bust. His teammate Carlos
Dunlap, who BB scouted at Florida and passed in the draft, turned out to be a way better DE. Dunlap had 3x more sacks in his rookie season than Cunningham has had in his entire career. One of BB's worse misfires. Pretty much everyone had Dunlap ranked way ahead of Cunningham (who was labeled a reach).

Taylor Price - looked good in Training Camps. Some people had high hopes for Price. Often injured. Didn't produce in the regular season. Bust.

Zoltan Mesko - guess we just found a cheaper punter and moved on from Mesko.

Brandon Deaderick - below average player who had his moments on the Pats. couldn't stick on the roster.

Mesko was pretty bad and had to be replaced.

Theres not much of a difference in Rounds6-7 and UDFA's talent. Most of of your late rounds steals and ufa steals have a catch. Over half have attitude/personal/legal concerns and get overlooked. Burfict was a recent example who has far outplayed Hightower yet showed super talent in college. Others play for really really small schools but show prototype measurables and fall in the draft.Brandon Marshall/Colston are examples. Zach Moore is a freakish speciman who is raw and needs upper level coaching. 6'5 275 with raw power, flexible over 10' broad nearly 36" vertical and has run sub 1.6 10 yard splits at his size. Most impressive thing is he received zero combine drill coaching from his school that's not on any maps of any nfl franchise. Reports say his playskills are rocketing already due to technique coaching.Others are used incorrectly in college or are talented but backup somebody else. That was Terrell Davis' reason. Some like the immensely talented KT fall due to a combination. He was troubled at 17-18 in jail. Played at Jr college. Was most sought after Jr college transfer but landed at a school with a bad system and was severely underutilized at Cincinnati. He showed great measurables at 4.46 40( ran faster in transfer workouts) over 10' Broad nearly 36" vertical 6.8 3 Cone. Showed great quickness on field in his breaks. You can bet he can beat. All his combine measureables now, after all his very hard work training like Antonio Brown. Antonio is modern Jerry Rice and was a steal because he far outworks everybody. Hires multiple trainers like olympic sprint/gymnasts/martial arts types to better his quickness/flexibility. No drafter saw that coming. With all his probs, KT Could have went in round7 but didnt. Either way a steal. Rarely does a player show no talent worth drafting in top 100 then just morph into Clowney. He almost always showed top talent these geniuses ignore. I had a man crush on Geno Atkins yet because of one inch he fell a round or 2. Had he been nearly 6'3 instead of nearly 6'2 he may have been a early/mid second. He was one of my all time draft man crushes. I knew he would be dynamite. I'm a sore loser and had a temper tantrum when we kept passing and the Bengals got him.Yet AluAlu also slightly light went #10 overall. Go figure. He does or did have some quickness/power almost like Atkins if he hasn't quit trying/training. I think Bill can get some nice impact out of him if we tried to trade mid rounder for him.

But most steals are due to character concerns who get focused in the NFL or his probs were overblown. I think its ******ed not to take a chance on a talent in late rounds or signing him or trading late draft pick. If he stays stupid you just cut him,its not like you signed him to big $$. If he gets motivated you get a steal. Like Burfict/Houston/Dez Bryant. A good coach/winning environment/hard work ethic/strong disciplined team is part of coaches job anyways.

Between raw talent and really hard work like his cousin I do think Kenbrell fell through the cracks. And there were many cracks he had to fall through. Multiple drug dealing arrests/playing at Jr college/terrible college system and QB that underused his talent. But through all those cracks landed a 6'1 lightning quick feet super hard worker who is obsessed matching his cousin Antonio's production. Let's see when the games. Begin.

Which just underscores the fact that the draft is largely an over-hyped crapshoot.

Agree completely, but it helps the NFL with its brand for all the "preoverhype", "postoverhype" and "eventoverhype"...

Think of the fortunes made in the business of draft prognostication.... pretty incredible.
