I suspect so, but I'm not sure. I believe the Post stat referred to a member pool which included every player on an active roster at any time last season. Your numbers, I believe reflect current Pats roster members, correct? So the Pats are above league average then.
Yes, our 65 man roster is 43% free agents. I expect that to INCREASE in the next 2 weeks to about 50% as we add 8 draft choices and about 17 more UDFA's.
discuss!

So, what's the point?
A large percentage of the 53 man roster of all teams is composed of lowly-paid UDFA's. The draft is only the first 7 rounds of choices. Many more are made after the first 7 rounds.
If you reverse the arithmetic, you will find that 1st rounders play (start and excel) more than 2nd rounders who perform better than 3rd rounders, all the way through the rounds.
Seattle marketing presentation on UDFAs (interesting NE stats also):

Which just underscores the fact that the draft is largely an over-hyped crapshoot.Yes, our 65 man roster is 43% free agents. I expect that to INCREASE in the next 2 weeks to about 50% as we add 8 draft choices and about 17 more UDFA's.

One of those teams seems to have been smart about that...the other, not so much.I also found it interesting that the two bottom teams for UDFAs are the Giants and Jets. I thought New York was a popular destination for players.
I'd be curious to see what the breakdown was just for starters.
I suppose that analysis would take me about 7 minutes at Patriots.com/roster and a pencil/piece of paper.
Danny Amendola, kind of gets a bad rap around here but he is a starting quality player, UDFA. Wes Welker was a UDFA, Thompkins was UDFA, had a pretty productive season. Bolden was UDFA, productive in RB committee, BJGE was a UDFA for us before getting a big contract with Cinci. Wendell was undrafted, he's been up and down, really good in 2012 in 2013 took a step back but was resigned to a deal for pretty good money, Arrington was UDFA, good in the slot but surpassed on the depth chart do to recent talent acquisitions. You can't have an a first or second rounder at every position, even if you hit 100% of all 1st and 2nd round picks it would take 11 years to build a team and that's just the starters not to mention sub package and depth, and you have to re-sign the players when they hit free agency because the rookie contract is only 4-5 years.Yeah! UDFA are great! Except the probably not starters or high end starters.
First I will try Google then I will may look at Patriots.com
