Pats on the clock on ESPN

Hmm, Kiper used to have Nelson at something like 14th overall on his big board, but now he doesn't even have Nelson in his top 25...

McShay also talked about Nelson being to one demensional to warrent a high first rounder, so maybe Nelson falling to NE isn't all that unrealistic.

Also, a sports writer in Jax thinks the Jags might go WR, or TE (Olsen) with their 14th overall pick. I"ve seen some people saying Dallas could go WR, or CB with their first, instead of Safety...Maybe (Big maybe) NE could have their choice of Nelson, Griffin, and Meriweather at 24.

Well, in a setting like this, where they talk about one team at a time, it's possible he gives out the same player to multiple teams. He's just listing likely targets as opposed to a full mock.

Both picks are quite wonderful...but I have to admit..when a player becomes a "Patriot" pick..they usually get bravved before the Pats are on the clock. Too many times in the past years a player seems to be in the radar and that is the kiss of death of teh player EVER becoming a Patriot. Once that happens..another team will draft them..their value seems to go up. And what is odd is that who REALLY knows if the Patriots HAD THEM ranked as high. But that is all OK...for I really think the Pats will wait for mistakes to happen and draft that player that falls through teh cracks..and it always happens later in the first round. Wilfork is just a great exa,ple of that and while THAT does NOT happen every year..it happens more than enough. Every team went D last year it seemed and Maroney was available..as was Jackson..(and I still think he will turn out OK...) Mankins was a stretchm, but I thought for awhile he was a Patriot type player..and he has been. Willis might be the guy..or...who knows..just get two solid players..that is all..

Mort said that if the Pats had just paid Branch the money (disregarding that he was still under contract, naturally) they wouldn't be having these problems at WR.

*sigh*

Looks like we let a Hall-of-Famer go, kids!

He fell out after his combine numbers. Now that he ran his pro day numbers he'll pop back in. The constant over reaction to numbers.

Did he say those words before or after Welker, Stallworth, and Washington...and Bam?

He said that yesterday, lol. Kiper actually said something like (paraphrasing)"Well, I think they pretty much addressed their WR situation through free agency, with the addition of Stallworth, Welker, and Washington. I probably wouldn't expect them to take a WR until day 2, now."

Mort's an idiot sometimes, and Kiper can be as well, but he was the voice of reason during this instance.

the trade is 24 and 28 for 16 and 47 at least i think thats what he's talkin about because it equals out

Interesting proposal, but I think I'd prefer staying at #24 & #28. The PAts track record with 1st's versus 2nd's is very different.

This years draft class has more second round talent than it does legit first rounders. This is why moving up in round one from 24 to 16, and then moving back from 28 to 47 in the second round makes a lot of sense. NE would likely have to reach for someone with the 28th pick, and that same player could be on the board at 47.

it would be an interesting test of the value chart after the new agreement w/ the Players Assn. 16 is the last pick that you can sign for 6 years. 24 & 28 are five year deals. IIRC, 47 is now capped at a 4 year deal, so you would have to know that you are drafting a player that could help you right away, rather than someone that you could develop for this scenario to make sense.

I've said before the only thing that hurts potentially trading down into the second is that 4 year cap. Pioli said that makes trading down from a first round pick to a second less attractive.

This trade however does make it more attractive than just simply trading down into the second because of the 16th pick you mention. As I've noted before (in other threads) NE likes to lock their draft picks up for as long as possible, so getting a top level player for six years, instead of five makes moving into the top 16 sound even better. NE is one of the teams people complained about when the cap on late first rounders, and the cap on later round picks was put into place, so it would almost be like sticking it to the people who complained.
