In their zeal to make as much money as humanly possible, the NFl is glutting the market to the point where even their most devoted fans will be come thoroughly sick of them and stop watching every little twitch and tickle presented as NFL news and eantertainment. I, who am not among the most devoted of fans, am already there, but my disgust threshold is quite low.
The NFL is a business. Why would you expect them to operate based on any motive other than maximizing profit?
It seems that the NFL gets more attention than ever before. I'm not sure why moving rounds 6 and 7 to a 4th day, or having the draft in May rather than April could possibly drive away a fan. If you are so in love with the draft that you are adamant about which day round 7 is done on, I'd say you are pretty hooked. Hard to imagine someone would stop watching games because the nonames of the late rounds got drafted early on a 4th day instead of late on a 3rd day. Am I missing something?

I never said he had the power to implement anything but don't kid yourself that he is merely a puppet for the owners. Do you really think Kraft is proposing a 4 day draft?

Keep screaming from the mountain top how you're so much smarter than all the "ignorant masses" because you've figured out something everybody already knows.

Football isn't thriving because of Goodell, it's thriving in spite of him. Fantasy football is what's driving it's popularity. Saying every move is good for the game because it generates more revenue is short sighted and dangerous.

I think you just have to accept that what is best for the owners of NFL franchises is not consistent with what you would like them to do, and that they really don't care, because they exist as an entity to do what is in their best interest.
You should probably also get on board with the idea that more fans support most of these changes than hate them, otherwise, the league wouldn't do it because it would decrease support.

They expect more interest and better ratings from a May draft, and a 4 day draft (or at least are deating it) If they are correct they really can't be concerned that some number of fans don't like it when that number is smaller than the ones that do. Its business.

OK, I'm a fan and so are the overwhelming majority of posters who have chimed in this side of the subject and you say that the owners really don't care what we think, but then you turn around and say the league wouldn't do something that would decrease support. Well, which is it? There is a disconnect in your logic. And I doubt you have anything to back up what the majority of fans support.

Good luck to NFL on day four of the draft, I'm sure it will be a ratings bonanza with all those tuning in to watch rounds 6 and 7.

I agree with what you said, and have something to add to it..... It's not just a matter of getting people to watch for 4 days, it is also a matter of dominating the sportsmedia headlines and talk show for 4 days. So while people may not necessarily watch all 4 days of the draft, the news media will be talking about it for that much longer a period of time.

Do you think these changes are being made for fans, or non fans? I think the latter.

Quite frankly I cannot watch most Of the draft this year due to graduations now.. Late April was perfect.. Now early may is when weather gets nicer and people have grads

You do that Roger. Nobody will watch beyond the first round, like they always do. Maybe the owners will fire you for such a dumb idea. One can hope....

I'm with you in the thinking that moving the later 6th and 7th rounds to a 4th day would make it even more drawn out and tedious. I think that the support and viewing would be minimal at best. The thing that I dislike most about Roger Goodell is that he is constantly trying to fix something that is not broken. The NFL is at the height of its popularity, so I do not see the need for constant changes. I miss the days where we'd see Paul Tagliabue or Pete Rozelle up at the podium during the draft once a year, and then we wouldn't hear from him for another 365 days. With Goodell, it has to be a constant striving of attention, and more rule changes, playoff changes, international changes, etc (now the hopes to bring back a developmental "minor league" during the spring months????) than anyone can even keep up with.

That all said, I can appreciate AndyJohnson's POV in the sense that he is reminding us that a successful business model is going to do everything possible to continue to make more and more money. I just feel as though Goodell is taking it much too far, or at least that's how many people are seeing it anymore.

Think of it this way.
The NFL business knows that it has you and me hooked. Completely.
So their efforts are spent making any and all changes they believe will expand their customer base.
What "fans" think is irrelevant, up to a point, a point not yet reached.
Brace yourself for more and more changes.

Goodell sucks.

Roger Goodell is the Michael Bay of sports...ruins all the things we used to love.

These changes are being made for this...

They don't care that they're watering down the sport and that they're only going to hurt it in the long run with dumb moves like this one, as long as it puts more money in their pocket right off the bat.

As other posters have pointed out, this is a dollars and cents marketing decision for the NFL.

Besides, it will give the networks a chance to carry more puff pieces on why Peyton is the greatest Quarterback and human being in all of recorded history and why the Patriots shouldn't have gotten away with cheating without the sacrifice of Belichick's and Kraft's first born. In other words, "Business as Usual." :)

people who watch the draft are weird.

That is very easy to clarify. The league cares about what will increase popularity, attention, and revenue, and recognize that some will be unhappy with moves that will overall be positive.

Its easy to gauge the fans support, monitor what happens when you make a change.

If you mean to attract more fans, probably. As much as people will gripe, real NFL fans aren't going to abandon the NFL because it has a 4 day draft in May instead of a 3 day draft in April.
But if you increase attention to your league, you draw in more new fans. Sure, that makes total sense.
I'm just not sure why this is even something to talk about.
