Rumor Mill: Interest in FA LB Kawika Mitchell?

Can you name me one of their starting DT's?

Very good point.

Im glad someone said it now moreso than before.

Their only real player on that line is Allen and he wants to be traded.

LB's benifit greatly from great DL help.

The Lewis Urlacher example was also another good one.

Think of how poor it looked like our LB's were playing sometimes when Seymour and then Wilfork were out. However, I am a bit disturbed this guy has received zero action in FA. Everyone is looking for a young, athletic defender, especially a starter. Maybe his agent has been playing tight and hoping for more competition - maybe no else will touch him until there's nothing else left.

Despite his warts I'd say Mitchell would have to be an upgrade on Alexander, a guy who was invisible in the Colts game when it was his chance to make at least one play of note. Alexander makes 100+ tackles over two years as a starter? I can't see any reason to think that would have happened had he been in Mitchell's spot.

Hartwell has a very high ceiling if healthy, this dude Mitchell is still in one piece and can be a solid, reliable player. Tough choice, IF the Pats are looking at them.

I don't know much about Mitchell, and I don't like the part in the Scouts.com profile about how "he is not a physical take-on player in the run game. He has size, but he can get engulfed inline and is not a quick-shed player in run support..."

...but c'mon, what does Monty Beisel sucking having to do with any other Chief linebacker?

Does the fact that a bunch of Ravens' defenders flopped on their new teams mean that Adalius Thomas won't work out?

I've seen scouts.com do some very sloppy work - using very old sources of information when a player has already proven himself.

As for the Beisel factor, it is a concern that players who did well in the Chiefs system might not be cut out for playing here. But if BB signs him he sees something, and 100 tackles ain't bad.

Wondering how much we have and how much he wants??? guy got 100 tackles a year for 2 years....BB might see something in him that will suprize everybody....

I prefer Hartwell.

With regard to Edgerton Hartwell, I submitted a question to Mike Reiss's

mailbag about him. Mike said that his agent had routinely approached

the Pats to guage their interest. Mike believes that the Pats showed no

interest and would not in the future.

Makes sense. Anybody who saw him play with Atlanta knows that even when he was healthy he played poorly. Mitchell is the better player.

why should I care?

can you name me the nickel back for the Carolina Panthers?

are you related to Kawika Mitchell?

Flying_Fungi - You just proved his point for him The DT in the 4-3 has a tremendous amount to do with the RUSH defense. Much more so than the MLB. In the 4-3, the D-line, primarily the DTs are the front line and they are the ones who are supposed to be making the plays against the run. If they aren't, then its 4-5 yards before they are getting to the MLB anyways.

DB--I know man--I recognize that Mitchell is out there and may have some value. I recognize that KC's defense has been generally awful. I also recognize that specific players are worse than others. My point is two-fold:

1--that I don't want anything that has been touched by the stink of KC's D--there is no logic to support this, only opinion.

2--trying to remove one piece of a crappy machine with the thought of installing it in an excellent machine is, IMO, flawed logic. Mitchell made a lot of tackles. Without looking at every snap, can it be determined that he would have made fewer or more tackles with better DL in front of him and DB behind him? I would argue that this can only be assumptive even after having looked at every snap.

I'm just not sold on the guy. And Free Agency combined with his availabilty seems to be supporting my position thus far...

I think Mitchell is represented by Tom Condon which is probably the main reason he is not signed yet and why it is unlikely the Pats will sign him. If you remember, he was the agent involved with the Watson's rookie holdout. From a talent point of view, he is the best LB currently available.

Even though I keep calling him Kavika Mitchell, I still want him on the team. :) Then we can truly go into the draft with few holes.

We'll see what happens.
