Just Saw "Draft Day"

I was able to see Draft Day and I thought it was pretty good. The trades were unrealistic. This movie is more for NFL Fans and people who follow the draft like I do. Overall, it is a movie worth going to see and worth buying to get you ready for the draft every year. Seeing that movie has got me pumped even more for the Draft. IS IT MAY 8TH YET??

OK I just decided to kill a couple hours and so I went to see this. Here's my take:
SPOILERS AHEAD
It was virtually exactly what I expected. I honestly predicted going in that Costner would do something seemingly stupid to create tension leading up to the climax, only to get some other team to do something incredible stupid to save his ass. I also predicted some sort of other ridiculous subplot would add to the tension. So I was right on both accounts. So let's take stock:

The Seahawks (who ironically had the #1 overall pick in the year following their Super Bowl victory, but let's ignore that because certainly no one knew they would win the Super Bowl when this movie was filmed) essentially traded the #1 pick in the draft plus a punt returner for the #6 pick in the draft. I'm not sure that's what teams are supposed to do when they trade down. It was kinda silly how the QB they didn't want at first all of sudden became a guy they couldn't live without.

The Browns, and our hero, essentially traded 3 2nd rounders for the #1 pick in the draft. Pretty silly but I guess we have to accept it for the sake of story-telling.

I didn't like the way scenes would transition from one character to the next and back (tough to describe but if you've seen the movie, you know what I mean).

I don't mind bad acting from real world stars making cameos as themselves, but there was absolutely no reason to cast Puff Diddy (or whatever he calls himself these days) as a top agent because he proved he can't act his way out of a paper bag.

The extra drama way a bit over-the-top. The notion that Costner's character's mom would pick draft day to spread her late husband's ashes is absurd. This was supposedly a football-savvy woman. She would know her son had other things to attend to.

I did like the way they showed the GM can have a conflict of interest. Pressure from the owner to make a big splash and do something which will sell tickets. But, as mentioned in the movie, sometimes doing the smart thing like trading present day picks for future picks only ensures those picks will be made by the guy who replaces you when you get fired.

Overall, not the worst movie I've ever seen but certainly not a classic either.

Yeah, after wasting too much on going to see crap movies, I usually check out metacritic.com and/or rotten tomatoes anymore to see a large grouping of reviews. I take the same path for those "in between" kinds of movies that are just meh with waiting for on demand or redbox.

This one may be at least worth the cheaper price of a weekend matinee though, depending on if anything else is out there. As you get older and settle down, you somehow end up seeing more movies It's the weirdest damned thing.

Saw it....wished I skipped it.
Problems #1 .....the film assumes the audience are neophyte football fans and therefore must explain the basics of football. Any dialogue that included the coaching staff minions was absurd, dumbed down and painful.
#2...casting. Dennis Leary was a horrible choice. etc etc
#3....The trades were idiotic. The dialogue between GMs was cliched

This filmed reminded me of that Sylvester Stallone move when he played an aging Formula 1 driver. A story inserted inside a lot of stock footage of real car races. It didn't work...and Draft Day doesn't work. And don't get me started on why Hollywood MUST include a relationship subplot in everything they touch

I walked into the theater hoping to see a film as unique and well thought out as "Money Ball" but instead got the typical tired Hollywood formula.

My advice...wait till it gets to Red Box....then spend the $1.29. Then and only then will content = price

Back when I was a youthful adult (and living in Boston), I played in the dart league. That's how you spend a Tuesday night. Good friends, some competitive gaming, drinks and always an interesting neighborhoods to visit for those white collar professionals....good times and always a few good stories.

Costner is the Joe Flacco of American leading men. He can't carry a movie on his own, but can be very good when surrounded by the right people. Like Flacco, he's kind of a douche and is paid too much for what he does.

He was great in Tin Cup, The Untouchables, Bull Durham, American Flyers, Silverado, Field of Dreams, and Wyatt Earp. All of those movies had great ensemble casts.

I never bought Costner as a rugged prairie survivor in Dances with Wolves, the Native Americans would have kicked his ass. And any role where Costner fakes an accent - Robin Hood, JFK and Thirteen Days - sucked, sucked, sucked.

There are some huge plot holes. But, man, it's football! Complete with real football players. I strongly recommend to the members of this site that you see it before May 8.

but...but...but WAIT!!...Kevin was lights out in Waterworld and The Postman...why, don't you all remember when he was reading Shakespeare and that other guy quoted "Cry havoc and let slip..the dogs of war!!!"...chills I tell ya'... and then when he wouldn't let any of the teenagers go out on routes and tried to deliver all the mail on his own and got real tired and rundown because he didn't want to see any of the kids shot by the post apocalyptic army that had guns while every one else sat around singing folk songs...didn't that send chills down your spines????

I saw the chick (Jennifer Garner) in the movie on one of the daytime shows and she said it was a chick flick, and was telling the ladies in the audience not to put up too much resistance if the man of the house wanted to see it.

I can do without looking at Jennifer Garner. Her jaw enters a room five minutes before she does.
