Anybody hear anything on this? I didn't see this anywhere else and I am not sure there is any buzz surrounding this player. Eventhough he has size at
6-1, 253 he is not a physical player in the run game. On the other hand he is a two year starter with 100+ tackles two yrs in a row and he is smart since he adjusted to two different defesive systems over the last two years. Steady but three defeses in three years seems like asking a lot.

Is another Kansas City linebacker headed to New England? PatriotsInsider.com brings you the latest on Kawika Mitchell, and the buzz surrounding him.

From Scouts:
Kawika Mitchell
Height: 6-1
Weight: 253 lbs. Age: 27
Pos: LB
Experience: 4 years
College: South Florida
Drafted: Year:2003 Round:2 Pick:15, Chiefs
Insider Analysis
Grade 67
Expert's Take He was a 16-game starter in the middle in 2006 and led the Chiefs with 104 tackle for the season. He is a two-year starter for the Chiefs at the MLB position. He is a good starter, but would not be described as much of a playmaker for the position. He is an every-down player in their defense. He is a smart player and adjusted well this season to the shift to the Cover 2 defense. He is a good overall athlete for the position. He plays hard and he competes on every single down. His athletic ability is better than his strength and he is better uncovered then covered up in their defense. He has improved as a leader in their defense and he does a good job of shifting and aligning players in the front four based on the offensive alignment pre-snap. He has improved his awareness and instincts for the position. Early in his career he would take some false steps in run support but this season he did a much better job of trusting his feel and playing with more of an attacking style. He is a player that shows good sideline to sideline speed and range. He is a player that can make plays out near the numbers based on his hustle and effort, rather than speed. He is not a physical take-on player in the run game. He has size, but he can get engulfed inline and is not a quick-shed player in run support. He is a willing take-on player and will not back down, but you would like to see him shed and make more tackles. Most of his tackles come as a freed up player that can get to the ball with little contact or avoid ability. He is a solid tackler inline and out in space. He is not very explosive, but he is dependable to get the man down to the ground. He shows good enough speed to run the middle of the field in their Cover 2 defense. He can flip his hips and he shows good speed to run with the tight end seam route. He shows good initial quickness to buzz from his zone drop. His instincts from his zone drops are just adequate. He does not break up a lot of passes and can be a step late when trying to make a play on the ball instead of the defender. He is a steady player, but he lacks play making ability. Last season he had two sacks and three pass-deflections despite being an every-down player. He has not forced one fumble in the past two seasons as a starter, which is not a real good stat for an every-down middle linebacker. He makes most of the plays he should, but he is not a guy that makes any plays that he shouldn't.

I will give you one reason why we are unlikely to take a shot at another Chief LB

Monty Beisel

I have a close friend that plays for k.c and said " kawika mitchell is pretty fast and his motor never stops and that he is a true professional "

So i would love him here in NE teddy has 1 year left age is creeping up on vrable so i if he can get the system then why not hes a beast

I don't know much about Mitchell, and I don't like the part in the Scouts.com profile about how "he is not a physical take-on player in the run game. He has size, but he can get engulfed inline and is not a quick-shed player in run support..."

...but c'mon, what does Monty Beisel sucking having to do with any other Chief linebacker?

Does the fact that a bunch of Ravens' defenders flopped on their new teams mean that Adalius Thomas won't work out?

Biesel was never a full time player, always nothing more than a role/special teams player and spot starter at best also much smaller at 6-3 230.

Now I am not saying Mitchell is a star but they are two totally different players and this guy is a young two-year starter who is a steady player.

This guy is a good player. I've been surprised that he hasn't been signed by now. He had crappy DTs playing in front of him at KC. He will be a good pickup for whoever gets him.

I'm not sure, he's not a big run stuffer, and his coverage game seems flawed (then again, a flawed cover 2 LB might be skilled enough to handle the 3-4).

I'd take him as a depth/rotation guy, maybe in the Roman Pfifer mold, but I don't think he's future starter material.

I kept my eye on him when KC was playing because I knew he was an upcoming free agent. He looked ok in the games I saw, not a real play maker. He could be an adequate 3rd or 4th ILB behind Bruschi, Vrabel and a TBD Draft Pick. The fact that he is still available indicate no one else thinks he is any good either.

Even though he is not special he is a huge step up over Larry Izzo and Alexander. In our scheme we wouldn't need him to play like Ray Lewis, just make the plays in his area. Depening on how the draft shakes out he could be worth a look.

SOLB - Colvin, Woods
SILB - Mitchell,TBD Draft Pick, Izzo
WILB - Bruschi, Alexander, Mays
WOLB - Thomas, Vrabel

In a perfect world the draft pick could play ILB or OLB (Bradley seems to be the best fit).

Interesting option.

He's probably the most athletic ILB still available in free agency. Not the inside run-stuffer that the team lacks.

What he might be is a Roman Phifer type. He might be an upgrade over Eric Alexander in that role.

However, if the scouting report is correct, and he is good in space but weaker when blocked by guards, he's not the type of player that the Patriots really need, and you might get back into a round hole-square peg situation.

I totally discount the Monty Beisel issue. Just wearing the same jersey doesn't make them similar players.

Going by this great logic, AD is gonna stink because Starks did. I hope we don't go after Hartwell either. Those Raven defenders are ALL trash! All of them I say!

/sarcasm

Yup Beisel has nothing to do with Mitchell, so let's not confuse the issue.
Sounds like a solid backup or rotation type guy. He could be good for a year until the rookie we draft is ready to step up. Or we could go after Hartwell. New England is going to want to have a good mix of guys in there.

yes

that's right

I compared him very seriously to Monty Beisel

no humor or sarcasm whatsoever

---

let's try this again

the KC Chiefs defense has sucked for years

and some of you are trying to rationalize signing one of their defense's building blocks that even THEY aren't rushing to re-sign

2006 18th ranked rush D
2004 29th ranked rush D

and he was the starting MLB for those defenses

no thanks

Can you name me one of their starting DT's?

Can you name me one of their starting DT's?

why should I care?

can you name me the nickel back for the Carolina Panthers?

are you related to Kawika Mitchell?

Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher couldn't succeed with those stiffs.

Richard Marshall.

In case you are wondering, he is their DT rotation:Ron Edwards, Ryan Sims, James Reed and Jimmy Wilkerson. Exactly all soft.

I think he means that DTs keep the guards off the linebackers. So they could be a big reason for the Chief's lack of success stopping the run.

I am concerned since in the 3-4 the ILBs have to show more ability shedding blocks, but if we're only looking at him as a backup at least he is a proven guy. Right now we have a declining Bruschi and maybe Vrabel although Vrabel prefers playing outside. There is no depth to the ILB rotation at all. And I sure hope you're not counting on Izzo or Alexander to step in.

the pats are interested in everyone, i'm not surprised

I've never thought of him as a 3-4 LB. But I didn't think Alexander would be one either when he came out of LSU. He would definitely be an upgrade for Alexander. He should be starting somewhere in the NFL next year, I know that. He's not a backup.

This would be a solid signing. He is exactly the kind of vet ILB they need. A guy with starter experience who won't be a total weak link if/when someone gets injured.

That's really all the Pats need at LB this season: one or two of these non-flashy vets with starting experience to add real depth to the LB position.
