per Clark Judge he has us taking

24 Reggie Nelson, S, Florida -- Pats' secondary keeps getting crippled, so it's time to start finding young talent. With Rodney Harrison near the end, Nelson is an ideal choice.
28 Anthony Spencer, LB/DE, Purdue -- Great speed and explosion off the edge. So the Patriots just got some with Adalius Thomas. They can get more with Spencer, who's perfect for a 3-4.

Any mock that has us getting Reggie Nelson @1.24 should be tossed out.

Period.

Why another OLB....

Its not a weakness.

Not so sure about that. Your four starting LBs are presumably Thomas, Colvin, Vrabel and Bruschi. Regardless of how you configure that group, there's currently NOBODY inside or out I'd feel good about as the next man in.

Except that when you look at the Senior Bowl reviews, Spencer didn't have that explosion off the edge that you want.

Why is that? I have seen some different views on Nelson. For example PFW says he has to play in a simplified defense, meaning he may not be the sharpest tool.

I don't know if that's true. But, even Kipers mock had him going to us at 24 or 28 with Willis being the other. Let's all pray that he's right on draft day.

I agree but Thomas and Colvin are a hell of a lot younger than Bruschi and Vrabel....

Bruschi is your best MLB. He is also your oldest LB. I would do my best to replace him first.

Judge had Landry going #22..............

Some people actually think Spencer could play ILB, not just OLB. Hmm, Maybe...

Gil Brandt and Mayock were in a conversation on NFL Network and they said that there were no OLB/DE conversion candidates that compared with Ware, Merriman or Wimberly of past years, available in this draft. Spencer may be the best of a poor crop.

He looked quick enough during the regular season.

I think Spencer will be great as a situational pass-rusher for starters. Playing OLB instead of DE should help mask any lack of explosion, if there is any.

Well then, I guarantee if Belichick has reached the same conclusion, he's not on his draft board.

I'm just saying. It is COMPLETELY unrealistic to think that Reggie Nelson will be there @1.24. There are so many teams ahead of us that need a S, and Nelson is (by almost ALL accounts), the second best S in the draft.

He would have to get past Carolina, Atlanta, Dallas, Jax... it just wont happen. As for Kiper having Willis and Nelson BOTH falling to us... that is laughable (and was probably an old Mock). If Kiper really still believes that, he should be fired. then again...I think he should be fired anyway, because he is almost always wrong... but that's a rant for another time. :D

Bottom line, as nice as it is to imagine a Nelson falling to us, or Landry falling out of the top 10... It is just not realistic. To get either of those guys (or Willis for that matter), it means we have to move up. A highly unlikely scenario (imo).

I agree completely on Kiper. I talked to him on ESPN radio last year and asked him about Maroney. He kept telling me that Addai was the better fit, and even mentioned Lendale White, and DeAngelo Williams.

During draft day I was sitting there waiting for NE to pick Maroney (I really wanted Maroney big time), once they did I was really happy.

Then the fallowing unfolds (Mind you I'm paraphrasing):
* SP is me talking to the TV, LOL*

Kiper - I'm shocked...I really didn't think this would be the pick here"
SP - *points at the TV* "Stop talking out of you azz"
Kiper - "Really I thought someone like Addai...
SP - "Please"
Kiper - ...or (I think he said this next part) even Deangelo Williams would have been a better pick here...Maroney doesn't fit their system"
SP - "Idiot!
Kiper - "Maybe even someone like a Lendale White...
SP -"ha!"
Kiper - ...would have been the better pick here"
SP - "Ha, how does this guy even have a job? Moron!"
Kiper - "Again I'm just shocked."
SP - "I told you he would be a good fit on the phone....maybe next time you'll actually do some research...Hack!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOL! That was some good stuff right there. That night I was calling people I know telling them how NE drafted both of the guys I wanted (Maroney & Jackson) and how I thought Kiper was an azz.

Say what you want, but Kiper knows more about draft prospects than we'll ever know. He may not know about teams systems, but I have to agree somewhat. We need a zone blocking scheme for Maroney to be a star, we don't really do the zone blocking scheme.

What makes Kiper so special? He is wrong more often than not.

If Landry is available past #16 we need to trade up and grab his *****.:D

absolutely no doubt about that statement lol

hoping to get willis also...that'd be sweet

IF landry slides past 16 then it'd be best to have the 24th pick and a 4th rounder....i think 1.24 and 3.28 is too much to jump up 8 slots....
