Landry is a top 10 pick easily. Only two other guys have gone that high as a Saftey in the Last 10 Years.

Sean Taylor #5

Roy Williams #8

This is An Impact Player with rare physical tools, Theese guys don't come around all that often. there is a big dropoff between him and Merriewether, Griffen, and Nelson.

Safties are becoming more important with all theese new breed tight ends.
And because Saftey is a Position that relies on instincts and athleticism, there is almost no chance this guy is a bust, unless he's injury prone.

I wouldn't trade up that high for any other position or player,
But Landry is A Sure Thing. Just imagine our Defense with Landry and all his versitility that he brings to the table.

Well it's March So at least for now I can Dream?:singing:

I forgot to say i didn't include them, cuz it's too early to evaluate their draft worthiness.

#1) One player alone doesn't change a team - Taylor hasn't brought DC a Super Bowl
#2) Kraft has been on record stating that the Pats view the best draft value as a mid-to-late first rounder - they don't holdout, you don't gamble guaranteed signing bonus money on an unproven talent, and you still get a close to top-flight player. The only time in the BB/Pioli era I remember them moving up inthe first round was when the panicked that everyone was emptying out the DL cupboard and they moved up to the middle to get Ty Warren.
#3) We would have to package more than just our #24 and #28 to get into the top 5.
#4) We still need a quality YOUNG ILB as much or more than a Safety.

For those reasons, I am praying we get Willis and Nelson in the first round as Mel Kiper predicted in his latest mock draft.

That would be TEAM building.

I really want a DB in the first round and I dont think it matters wether it is a saftey or corner because I think we have a good amount of talent at both positions but I also think the last few years have proved the more depth at DB the better so sit at 24 and 28 and let a good one fall, you will get a good on at either 24 or 28 so why trade up?

roy williams can`t tackle .... if we end up with a player like that it will be bad. Also , you do realize that he will not played a down in NFL and might make more than most proven vets in defence except colvin and adiaus thomas. Not sure how it will settle with the locker room.

I would say move up to top ten for a seymour type player but not a saftey

Warren was a trivial move (cost a 6th round pick).

Graham was a significant move, but still only to #21 or so.

Exactly, which is one reason why they won't give away their draft to move up to #5.

The other is they badly need a young stud ILB.

Whitner was a clear reach and everyone knew it so I don't think that's a fair comparison. Huff might be a good comparison in a few years.

It's all up to the braintrust. They've been very agressive this offseason so it wouldn't totally shock me if it happened.

Even if Landry is a can't miss safety, it doesn't make him worth two firsts and a fortune in cap money over the next six years.

While I'd love for the Patriots to get Landry I'd rather they keep the 2 1st rounders and get a safety and LB with thier current 2 picks

if williams played with BB coaching him, I bet he would be a good tackler.

And the 8-10 pick isn't a ton of cap money

Uh, they only moved up one spot to draft Warren, 14 to 13 for a 6th round pick. Chicago got Tommie Harris at 14.

Their biggest move up in the first round was moving from 32 to 21 to draft Graham, but your point does hold that they've never moved up into the top ten. However precedent doesn't predict the future with BB/SP.

I would move up to get Patrick Willis. He's be a great pick for the Pats, and would learn and play as a rookie. Would replace Bruschi when he retires.

Up to what spot would you move up for him? The value of our 2 first rounders might get us up to #9.

While I agree that Landry can be special, this is a very strong safety class and I would not give up 2 1st rounders for him unless he drops to #15. Then we can get a mid-round 2nd rounder.

Please excuse a short disclaimer here. I'm retired now, and living in Thailand. Life is great, and there's plenty of NFL football on TV during the season. But the greatest loss for me, as a long-time draftnik, is that there is NO NCAA football broadcast here. So, I can't even pretend to have any "educated" personal opinions on specific players in the draft.

OK, that said, I will say that I totally agree Shmessy's wish here, on a strategic level. I strongly favor the idea of using our two R1 picks to get BOTH a good quality LB and a good quality S.

The Patriots are better at making the most of a player's talents than any team in the league. Their "team and scheme" strategy and tactics are near legendary already. How worn out is the "they have no superstars" line? Well, it's worn out because there's a lot of truth in it.

Give me two solid, young players to mix with the core we already have on defense, and I say the team will be more improved than it would be with one "superstar". In another "list life", I used the terms "shotgun" and "rifleman" to describe the approaches of using multiple draft picks, versus trading up to go for one star. I've nearly always favored the "shotgun". This year is no exception.

GO FOR TWO!

Good think we have a seperate thread for this. None of the other 18 "move up to draft Landry" thread truly captures the unique perspective this puts on things.

To respond, maybe we do, I'm pretty skeptical based on the the approach the team has had on the draft historically and what mgmt. has said about the draft but, who knows? I'm sure whatever happens will improve the team in the long run.

1) If it bothers you that there is another thread on the same subject, please hit the TRIANGLE with the ! in the upper right hand corner and report it to the Mods with links to the other alleged threads. If you do that simple process, I can assure you it would be taken care of (merged) very quickly.

It's far more effective than just whining on the thread.

2) If this is the 19th thread on this and you are bothered by it, then why do you then spend your second paragraph giving a serious opinion on such a redundant (to you) thread?

Last year, the going rate for a top ten pick safety was $15M in guarantees $ 5 years with total salary averaging $5 mil a year. What would it be this year? $18M for a rookie who's never played a snap? Could we even afford the cap space?
