While this isn't Mike Reiss reporting, these are at least a step up from "Incarcerated Bob" divining his bowel movements. :)

In any case, the rumors:

* Texans in particular are interested in Mallett (don't forget, Cassel's off the market, and the Browns don't seem inclined to move Hoyer)
* The Patriots have turned down a second-round pick for Mallett in the past. Twice.
* The Donkeys apparently at one point offered a second + Tebow for Mallett. [Remember that Tebow had a first-round contract at that point.]

Rumor: Patriots Have Turned Down 2nd Round Pick for Ryan Mallett - Pats Pulpit

Sure looks like the Pats value him, don't they?

2014: $776,976
2015: Free Agent

So I'm guessing they'll resign him if they won't trade him?

Sigh. Cue up the Brady's old threads and we should trade him and start The Hammah!

Lets take this with a lot of grains of salt. This is coming from a blogger who heard it from "someone he trusts."
"Justis and Ethan" aren't exactly the sources I'd rely on for accuracy.

Strongly consider taking a 2nd round pick for Mallett if it happens again. The Pats can use that pick for DL/OL help and take QBs like McCarron in the 4th.

If we can move him this offseason for a 2nd we better do it. We won't be able to hold on to him next year.

BB should not have been so stubborn and have just traded him in the past. If I hear they got an offer for a 2nd and didn't pull the trigger I will not be pleased.

Here is some info on the source, for what its worth, in his own words:

I'm Rich Hill...
…and I’m a marginally developed computer program that is designed to offer half-baked ideas on recent football news.

When did you first start following the Patriots? Lifer, first memory is the Super Bowl with Bledsoe. I was a mere babe, though, so my first real memories are during the Super Bowl runs with Brady. I only recently became insane and started to devote an obnoxious amount of time to the Patriots in Brady’s first season back from injury.

What is your favorite memory related to the Patriots? I’m a total dork. My favorite memory is the 2010 draft. I picked out Brandon Spikes, Zoltan Mesko, and Zac Robinson to the Pats. We’ll ignore some of the other picks.

If you could bring back any past Patriots player in his prime, who would you bring back and why? Is it selfish to say Tom Brady? If so, then it’d be Randy Moss, no question. Most exciting player in football.

I have a hard time buying this. Could be our guys trying to pump up his value.

We need to know if either one of them is in prison or dating Erika Leigh

Only problem with this is that these rumours were being reported by Ethan Hammerman and Justis Mosqueda. Rich Hill was responding to their rumours.

I don't put much store in Mosqueda, Hammerman, on the other hand, does seem to have some insight into the Patriots' scouting department at the very least.

Are we talking about a 23 year old kid a year out of college not working anywhere near the organization and saying he has knowldege of trade offers made to, accepted and truned down by Bill Belichick?
Color me skeptical.
If someone like that could know this info, there would be no secrets in Foxboro.

i dont buy it. if theres ever a time to trade mallett this year would be it. #33 isnt bad. although last time we had #33 it didnt work out for us too well

I agree with you.

Well, the Jets could use another CB

I think they would make the trade now, he is entering the final year of his contract so it makes sense; they got 3 years of service out of him and then move him for a second round pick.

I am not sure I buy the story to be honest though but maybe.

I can easily make a case for BOB wanting/needing Ryan Mallett. It just makes too much sense. If he trades for Mallet, he can take Clowney or even trade down for a QB desperate team and get a boat load of picks and still get Clowney or Mack.

However I think that #33 is too high a value for Mallett. I think that for the top pick in the 3rd plus a conditional 2015 that would range between a 2nd and a 4th would be enough to make the Pats pull the trigger.

I don't see all the sudden consternation about who the Pats have as their back up QB. There are a number of veteran QB's who have had a large number of successful games and even seasons who would be a capable as Cassell or Hoyer, in the unlikely occasion of a Brady injury.

Matt Shaub is one that comes to mind. No he's not a "great QB", but he's a capable enough to get to a couple of pro bowls. The guy who almost beat the Pats for the Browns last year, whose name escapes me (as they so often do these days), he also had some success with the Raiders and Washington. These are just 2 guys who will be available for something around the vet minimum.

Don't forget they are NOT here to actually play in the games.

I repeat my earlier suggestion even though I don't believe Texans want him that badly

Hammah to Tx
Pats & Tx swap 2nd round & 3rd round picks
I'd consider that trade for big move ups in each round

Better yet we give 'em The Hammah for
swap of 2nd round picks and their 3rd. I know, I'm dreaming.

Mosqueda tweeted that the offer was made in 2011.

I don't see him signing here. Why would he stay here for a backup role with an uncontested starter when he could probably go to another team and atleast fight for a starting spot? If he resign here then that's probably because no other team offered him a contract.
