Trivia buffs - Need your help on this question...

Has there ever in the history of the NFL had a team with a starting QB and either a starting/semi-starting WR or TE with the SAME last name on the same team as we have now with Tom and Kyle?

I could not find anywhere in the history of the league where this ever happened.

Are we the first?

You would think somewhere in NFL history before this year that a starting QB and his starting wideouts would have the same last name,I can't recall any though .

I hate to burst your bubble, but there was also a QB named Bert Jones and one named Doug Williams.

That reminds me -- it's hard to imagine a more English/Anglo-Saxon collection of last names than the Pats' recent picks:

Jackson
Wilson
Hill
Light
Branch

And Hobbs was an honorary 2nd-round pick IMO.

One has to go all the way back to Klemm for an exception.

That's not as strictly true in the other rounds, I think, which have at least occasionally featured names such as Graham (Scottish), Maroney (I presume Irish), Kaczur, Klecko, O'Callaghan, and so on.

HOW those black dudes wound up with English, Scottish, and Irish last names is an easy exercise left to the reader.

I mentioned the second round picks precisely because they were an extremely homogeneous list, more so than the general roster or list of picks or NFL player list would be.

And yes, of course that's how the black dudes got their last names -- from their ancestors' owners.

Many players have the same last names, so I'm sure it occurs sometimes.

Just for kicks, I ran Bert Jones and he threw to a Johnson and a Thompson.

Just started Doug Williams and he threw to a guy named Jones his second year. LOL.

Also a Johnson.

It's only a matter of time. If somebody would give a cash reward, I'm sure I could find 5 or 10.

To close off the race-related part:

If we divide NFL players into four groups as follows, #1 seems by far the biggest:

1. Black guys with English surnames
2. Black guys with non-English surnames
3. Non-Black guys with English surnames
4. Non-Black guy with non-English surnames

Also, at least the Patriots seem to have a higher fraction of guys with great measurables drafted in the early rounds than the later rounds, and there may be an ethnic connection there.

And finally, it just so happens that the highest-drafted non-black Patriots in recent years have the English-sounding names of Mankins and Light, while some of the mid-round guys have names like Kaczur, Klecko, Gostkowski, and O'Callaghan.

There's nothing more to it than a "law of small numbers" that happened to kick in. Look around data sets with tiny sample sizes and you can find all sorts of bogus trends.

And by the way, a lot of the Patriots' early picks have had names starting with "W".
